My elustrious Mayor has decided to pay parents cash to keep their kids in school. Although he's "CLAIMING" to have raised 50Million "Privately" to finance a pilot program(It's been done in other countries but not here in the US),he intends to hand up to 5,000$ a year to 2,500 randomly selected families. From 6rolls from 6 of the poorest neighborhoods in the city. Payoffs range from $25 every2 months for routine acheivements such as exemplary attendence to $300 bucks for improvements in important singular events such as scoring high on critical reading and math exams.

Hey Bloomy I think this is called Welfare. I could name 20 other things that this 50mil could be used for instead of paying people to do what they should already WANT to do for their children(Which is get them an education so that it buys them a crack at the American Dream{If that still exists in our days}). It costs nothing to send your kid to a public school till they hit 18yrs of age. Why should we designate funds to such a project and how will it be insured and inforced? Bloomy you can't be the Nanny for NY. Some of these parents have to care for more than themselves and they have to want a better life for their children other than what they have now. And no amount of money is going to ensure this. What it will ensure is to provide another "SYSTEM" for people to take advantage of.

I want health insurance. How about 50mil to ensure working families are insured.

Honestly it really might work.  Some kids drop out of school to get jobs that might be less neccessary if they were receiving some amount of money.  Don't get me wrong I'm not saying this is a brilliant plan but if he raised this money independently then I can't possibly see how this would be a bad thing.

Paying kids to stay in school is a great idea in thery, but one can't helps to wonder why do you got to pay them to stay. Are schools that bad that you got to pay them to stay-hummmm. Is this NYC trying this?
  • SeanRenaud said on Apr 03, 2007....
Because they can make money outside of school and many of them know/believe they'll never make it to and through college so why bother with the rest of HS.

Is that what it should come down to paying them. I think we should make schools into a place they want to go not get paid to go.

hmmm, getting paid to go to school? How long would these families get paid, and what happens to the kid after their payments stop, and what about the ones that don't get paid...what's to prevent them from dropping out?

...and how is this going to make them any smarter?
  • SeanRenaud said on Apr 03, 2007....
Ideally by sticking around they get smarter.

I do not want a child motivated by greed sitting in a chair solely for that purpose. This is the type of morals were going to teach our kids that everything revolves around money and that they aren't to do anything unless their getting paid.

And we wonder why the current crop of kids think everything is owed to them! Wake up America and stop teaching these kids that everything is a handout or motivated by money.

Everything does revolve around money. The reason we want kids to complete high school is to get a better education, and thus a higher paying job.  This is motivated by greed at its root.  Besides if you teach your kids that money is the end all be all they will be much better off.

sean: well, a corollary to that, and i think this is what HH is talking about, is that money is generally earned.

Well, why don't these families aim to get scholarships...wouldn't that be a better incentive? You know, paying for their schooling, rather than paying the kid or family or whatever?
