Would you rather work outside or in the field among the public or traveling?

Or would you rather go to an office to a desk, or be inside the same place every day?

I've worked outside in the field almost all my life and love it. At one time I was given a good position within the same company at a desk. I lasted six weeks and could not take it any longer.

Where is your work and do you like the surroundings?

I love working outside, I was confined to an office for too many years. I
don't have to choose any longer Beyond.

I sold my company and retired nine years ago last November. I spend too
much time indoors in the winter, but I sing in the sunshine the rest of the
    year.

I think a desk will kill you if strapped to it for too long.....thanks Beyond

Hi beyond and mobil, firstly I'm not really into the outdoors working environment really.  I love my office but I actually get out with clients a lot, my skills aren't apt for outdoor work so for me I like to keep my office desk job and play outside when I'm not working - for me it makes it more enjoyable.

But I've gotta say I'm young, there may be a time in the future where I'm desperate to get outside for a living I don't really know yet.

Right now I have my own office, window that opens and a great view of the main street of our town, the central office is bright but a little sterile thankfully I get out alot and enjoy opening my window to let in fresh air and the smells of the day.

Luckily, I can have a piece of both worlds, pretty cool setup, I don't get bored. At times, I am sent on field to do some community works, lectures, seminars and oftentimes, I stay in the office to do some paperworks related to finance.

Lately, I have been staying in the office... whew.. but I am not gonna start to rant again. =)

i've been at a true 'desk' job for the past 22 years.

the good thing the past 5 years is i telecommute...so the desk is in my own home.

this 'perk' is priceless to me.

i stop and walk the puppy...can take my regular walk at lunchtime...be here when the kids come and go....

interesting that my end customers are field technicians....the software applications i work on are all used by techs out on either maintenance or installation of our equipment.

Beyond, I think I am an office person.  I worked in an office set up for many years.  I do miss the office interaction (as Ed mentioned) now that I am a stay at home mom.  I think that is why SC means so much to me :-)

mobil- The desk job would have done me in. It was a busy place, but the job itself was tied to that little chair. Evidently you know the feeling from what you said. By the way, what kind of business, may I ask?

lucy- My wife has always liked the office and your description fit her office perfecty. But like you say, there may be an opportunity later on. I hope you get the chance to try it because its a different world.

Ed- I got a taste of office interaction and enjoyed it. But the difference was, I could still have employee interaction and easily meet thirty or forty new people a week. That part was also enjoyable.

lioness- Yours is a good setup, getting the best of both worlds. My wife does a lot of traveling with her office job and really enjoys it.

secret- In the last few years, I've run into so many who have taken their work to their home. They say the same as you in that it provides freedom. There is a lot to be said for being at home, to be able to come and go.

polar- There is much to be said for the interaction, whether inside or outside. I can see why this site would be helpful- and we are glad you are here.

Among people and not by a desk. I don't know if I would like to be outside all year around . My country can be cold.

beyond: perhaps i'm not understanding the distinct you're drawing. ?

skald- I hate cold. I worked outside all winters, but they are not severe. If I was in Iceland, there could be a change of heart.

Ed- I enjoyed the office interaction the short time I was there. Office interaction is a place you can develop friendships. The difference is, meeting a great number of people do not hardly ever develop friendships, but is an enjoyable type of interaction. I very much liked meeting a large variety of people and working with them on a temporary basis.

ah...OK, now i understand. i don't have much experirence w/ that kind of situation, so i can't really comment meaningfully about it.

When mated with a desk I feel confined and restricted. Ideally I enjoy being in an office environment with large amounts of interaction out of the office.
  • beyondtheveil said on Apr 11, 2007....
botoni- I can see that, in fact I do see it. My wife has an office but does a lot of traveling. She loves it.

I had the best of both worlds when I was a geologist.  I split my time between the office and the field.  I don't think I'd like it all one way or the other.  When the weather sucks, I'd rather be inside.  But I get bored just pushing paper all the time.  However, if my inside job is something really interesting and involves interaction with people, then I'm all for it.  Interestingly, when I was much younger, I thought my ideal job would be in an office with a door that shut where I could hide away from the world all day.  I'm glad I grew out of that.

kruu- I spent my career with the telephone company and we were always out in the worst of weather. That is when most of the trouble comes in. I remember a time when a repairman came in after being called out to fix a phone in a blizzard because a woman was pregnant. While they were repairing it, the other guy looked at him and said "how did women have babies before the telephone was invented?"
