My major career goal in life has changed twice in the last year, but what I want to do now is write a book series and become extremely wealthy, and then adapt the books into movie screenplays, maybe even expand my talents to help design the video games based upon the novels, and make even more money.

Then what would I do? Well, I've been to (and heard of) so many people who are hurting and in need. Can barely eat, are dying of disease, some forced into slavery or prostitution. Outside of America's comfort bubble, there's hurt everywhere, and a lack of hope.

What I'd do is donate money and (when possible) support many charities and organizations who simply help others. Giving is more rewarding than getting, and I think I'd want to do a lot of giving.

At the same time, I'm kicking around another idea: build a giant house and use it to house all sorts of people who need a place to stay. You know, show real hospitality. Then, I'd allow some major purchases for my wife and I, but would spend the same amount to give to someone else who could use it.

I might run out of money 10 years later, but I gotta work with what I have in front of me, eh?

So what would you guys do with a ton of money? Be honest! You could blow it all on hats, just explain why!

I think the more appropriate title for this post would've been If I were Bill Gates, what would I do with all my endless money? The Gates couple have a foundation and are actively supporting various charitable causes nationwide. As you said it: "giving is more rewarding than getting". But constructive giving is a lot more helpful than outright dole outs. If I have that much money, I'd want to put up as many businesses as possible that would generate employment to provide for livelihoods for our unfortunate brothers and sisters who need to be given a chance to support themselves. More important for these individuals is the opporutnity to be able to restore their self dignity and self worth through productive employment so they could get back into mainstream workforce and become positive economic contributors to society.

I think that's a great idea, FD. There is a need for generating jobs. There is also a need to keep some people alive, and help and equip them before they can even hold a job. Doling out money without a plan is foolish, but the fact is there's never a lack of need for money. For most of us. Doling out to someone in need must happen in some capacity, but standing on a curb with a bag full of benjamins...well, I just hope that person knows aikido.

    1) pay off all my student loans 2) pay off the rest of my parents' mortgage, and car payments If my brother was in dire financial need, I'd pay it. Then I would probably buy things for my friends. Things that I've seen and wanted to get them, but couldn't afford it. Nothing too extravagant, and not necessarily anything they want or need...just those things that I wish I could have gotten for them, because they reminded me of them. Then I'd put the rest into savings, and hope I never dig into it.

That's always been a tough question for me to answer, but you have to start somewhere. But, like you, I would buy a nice home in a safe suburb for my future family to live in, and of course, I would want to help out the less fortunate. I would probably donate something to an organization for disabled children and the homeless. I wouldn't keep the rest for myself. I'd be generous in giving to the people I love. I like your idea of writing a book series. I've actually been thinking of doing more writing lately as well. I'm a freelance writer and haven't published anything recently. I really need to get back to it......

After satisfying the creature comforts of myself and family(dream house etc.) I think I would love to start an educational foundation for children in my country. I would love to see all children realizing their potential and excelling no matter their financial capability.

I would travel a lot. Maybe even constantly. I have such a vigor for travelling. There's nothing that makes me happier. Of course I'd pay off all debts, get a nice house, and donate lots of money to an AIDS foundation, the National Right to Life Organization, and whatever else I felt led to donate to. It would be wonderful.

I have lots of money already...I am debt free...I help my kids and their friends...from time to time take in strays until they can get on their feet. If I had lots more I'd probably just give it away.

If I had $50 million dollars I would use it to expore technologis for alternative sources of fuel. We are currently causing a lot of damage to our planet with our use of fossil fuels, evidence is growing all around us. Just the other day a 20 MILLION CUBIC FOOT piece of mountainside came crashing down in Switzerland because it's underlying glacier foundation is melting away. You can read the entire story here. The technology exists today, a Silicon valley company has developed electric cars that have the performance of a high-end sports car. Why don't you already know about this car? The Golden Rule, only in today's generation it is The Oil Rule He who has the oil, makes the rules. We are being played by investment banks that have invested billions of dollars in petroleum and petroleum products. Our own president's entire family made their money in oil. Our vice president has run oil companies and still holds stock in oil and oil companies. Big companies control the media and the average American has no clue the dire straits we are facing in the next twenty years. Grassroots campaigns to find alternative energy sources to run our cars, homes, and businesses. We will still need petroleum-based products for airplanes, semi's, ships and other methods of transporting our daily goods. If we eliminate gasoline vehicles on the road we will eliminate 50% of our dependence on oil. That will help keep the price of oil at a reasonable level to avoid a full market crash when food prices double due to the increase in gasoline costs. We need to start now!

I would go downtown, and whenever I saw someone on a cel phone I would go up to them, rip it out of their hand, and throw it into traffic. Then I would hand them about twice what the phone was worth and find then go looking for my next target... Then I would feed the hungry, clothe the naked, house the homeless, Do whatever possible to heal the sick, get clean water to those who need it and buy the Edmonton Oilers (you know, buy myself a treat for helping all those people). Why? I hate cel phones, feel sad that I can't help everyone who is suffering, and really, really love the OIL (since they joined the NHL in '79). And I like your idea at the end...I think I'd buy a hat...maybe a nice Fedora... Then I would travel, travel, travel, and I would take all my family and friends with me...Because I love to travel... I guess that's it for now...

Wow. Wish I could know for sure I'd get a fortune for writing a book series. I'd want a castle with all the modern creature comforts on my own private little island. It's $20 mil for the island, castle contractor says $2 mil to build it, plus another mil to help get everything there, and $50,000 for a good boat.

i'll be honest, i have absolutely no idea how much money "all the money i wanted" encompasses. i'd dearly love to find out, however. :> i'd quit my job--of which i'm not very fond--and promptly commission an architect to design a house, find a bit of property i liked, and immediately begin a whirlwind world tour, just showing up at the airport with an overnight bag and play "spin the terminal" for destinations. that would probably get old after a while but until then, it would be great! i'd also faithfully devote a good bit as an endowment to my church. they've just brought in a new minister and she warrants a better salary. yes, i said church: i belong to one. please don't fall over in shock, lidstrom. :> ed

I would make sure my husband and I were debt free. Then I would ensure that all four children I have brought into this world (even though I am only raising one of them) had a trust fund that would pay for them to go to whatever college they wanted for at least 4 to 12 years. That way they could study anything they wanted. Then, I would make sure my mom had everything she needed. I would set up accounts so that my mom had money to take care of the two kids of mine that she adopted. I would do the same for my dad and the one he adopted. Next, I would repay everyone who has helped. The friends who have let me stay with them, especially. I would make sure my aunt always had enough money for her diabetes treatments. I would donate at least one million to the local homeless shelter that I have stayed at before. I would donate another millions to the local Salvation Army that runs the day shelter that I've been to before. I would donate money to the ASPCA and other animal protection groups. I would donate to food pantries and other programs to help in need families (Red Stocking would certainly reach it's goal...). Then I would put half of what we had left away in a savings account, use the other half to buy a nice house in the country, furnish with all the lovely things I can't afford right now, and buy my husband and I new, reliable, running, hybrid vehicles.

Debt free I am now, so will make sure I have sufficient to see me through old age and sickness(some countries leave the aged to fend for themselves, you know), do as much travel as I can before disability strikes, and look after my brothers and sisters, if I see a need, and give some to charity. Make sure my children can have a headstart in life, something that I do not have.......

I honeslty would pay off all my debts first and become debt free. I would like to help or start programs that would be a solution to poverty here in the states, also establishing shelters for single woman, families, people with disadvantages providing education and knowledge of Jesus Christ . I will not force the word of God on individuals and it wouldn't be mandatory to convert or become saved to receive help,  but I surely let everyone know this is not my doing but the Lord Jesus Christ work.  I would like to do missionary work overseas for I never seen poor people until I traveled overseas. I have lots of ideas and I am currently working on paying off debt so I can help others.
