I would like to mention this because it is time for Easter again.  How many people ever ponder the true meaning of the teaching of the Passover?? Historically it has been taught what a wonderful thing this was to pass over the Hebrew people and kill the children of the nonHebrews.  But is this not the murder of innocent children??  Is it not premeditated murder???Why do people celebrate such an atrocity and call it a good deed???If anyone else did such a thing they would be held up before the world as a criminal.. But just because people have been taught that Jehovah is God.  the Big Guy,  all powerful it is OK??It is good to follow this guy because of the good things he does????Where I come from we call the big guy who picks on little ones a bully.  Those who murder the little children no matter whose children they are are called murderers. What a leader to emulate. Do we really believe a bigger power has the right to murder just for the fun of it or to make a point??No wonder the world is in such turmoil if these are the things we look up to.

if you're gonna wax critical over the plagues, what about destroying the entire world during the great flood?

To most people it means coloring hard boiled eggs and then hiding them, for their children. The whole Bible thing is secondary. I think if God would have mentioned the people inside the blood slathered homes were safe from having their children killed, and enjoying colorful painted cooked eggs whilst in the shell. Then people would be more interested. If you think about we bastardize all traditions and holidays.

    Shiningstar,

You're ignoring a crucial element in the story: That the Egyptians were enslaving, mistreating and murdering the Hebrews. A more apt question is - why did the Egyptian gods NOT protect the Egyptians?

In the Old Testament, the children are punished for the sins of their fathers. The Old Testament God is largely a God to be feared and obeyed. That simply where the writers of the Old Testament were in their relationship with God at the time.

Moreover, the Old Testament is written from the perspective of the Hebrews and THEIR relationship with God, not from the Egyptian point of view. In many a Psalm is the loud cry for God to wreak vengeance upon the enemy and the oppressor.

Yes, it's a terrible loss of innocent life. God knows that. And when the Earth is finally wiped out by our dying Sun, all life, guilty and innocent, will die. God knows that too. Do we then judge God for the physical process He set in motion? Who are we to do that?

Vicarious is right - at least in Passover the kids get a bit of a lesson in history, culture and religion. We get a stupid bunny rabbit and hard boiled eggs.

To me it is not about any of the things that you are referring to.  It is about revealing the consciousness of the Hebrew god Jehovah.  There obviously many beliefs about many gods here so I can only discuss what I believe. This old god called himself the creator of the the world and everything in it.  When did that change???You with the many chapters and verses send me one.  I realize the Christians think Jehovah and Jesus are father and son and are one.  Just where did Jehovah get left behin  and who praytell took his place???
  • shiningstar said on Apr 02, 2007....
It is consciousness that I am speaking of here.  If playing with bunnies and eggs were all it was about I would not be questioning it at all.  My point is that if people believe in this god they will share in his consciousness.  Do people go to the death camps where the Jews were slaughtered and create a "holy day"  where all can celebrate the people that did the deeds????To me that compares to celebrating the death of innocent children. It is celebrating an act in consciousness that continues to link people to this belief in Jehovah being the creation of the world and all in it.

Having just attended a seder I can assure you that no one is "celebrating" that the male children of the Egyptians were killed.  It was the last of nine plagues which included, among other things, boils (ewwwww).  It also came near the end of 400 years of enslavement by the Egyptians of the Jews and after the Pharoah ordered the children of the Jews to be killed.

But once again, I can assure you that the death of the children was not being celebrated.  Freedom from bondage was what was being celebrated and in the seder they actually pray for freedom from slavery for all peoples of the world.

And all this from an atheist.  :-)

Shiningstar! You are ignorant and dumb! I'm sorry, I have never got this mad at people I don't even know, neither did I ever felt I must say such things to a fellow blogger! But I just cannot sit here and let you write these things without letting you know how dumb you are.
Passover celebrates killing innocent children!? You probably think that Jews sacrifize little children and drink their blood, and that there were death camps in WWII. What are you, a 17 year old skinhead?
IF you are going to talk about religion of any kind - positively or negatively - first you MUST KNOW WHAT IT IS YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT! Use your head for something more educational, sit down and learn stuff. Go find out for yourself what Passover actually means, and don't just say things you've might have heard from the other skinhead teenager while drinking hard liqour at your parents basement.
If you'd do that you'd know to respect YOUR OWN religion, since we are talking about the same God after all.
By the way, if the Muslim Egyptians learnd their lesson and became a ONE GOD fearing civilization, maybe you could learn from them too.
Next time, talk about... acne, or bad hair - something you probably have much more knowlege of!

Fear is not a reality in God only in the Abrahamic religion that worship the gods of war.  It is fear that leads you to strike out at me and call me names.  Why should it bother you for someone else to tell you a different truth than what you have been taught to believe??? This is the programming that ends all logical and reasonable discussions and creates the feelings that keep people from expressing their own individual truths with one another.  people do not discuss their politics ,  their religions or their beliefs in god openly because of this knid of verbal  abuse. Can we not change this so we can all share our views and be in joy that we have created a place that we can do so?  If God is Love God is also Allowing or none of us would be here at all.  I am at peacxe with your truth be at peace with mine.
  • ZsuzsiO said on Apr 05, 2007....
All this sounds very nice, as long as your "truth" is based on actual facts. But it isn't and it is not my oppinion but a fact that is easy to proove. READ AND LEARN, my friend. Find out the real meaning of Passover, and don't create your own version based on... what exactly?
Find out what this holiday is about, and what people do and say and celebrate during this beautiful holiday. Find out how they do it, and why they do it the way the do it. Find out how those innocent Egyptian children died, and why. Than, and olny than will you be able to hold a respectable conversation or write about your side of the story.
To do the above I'll invite you to read my blog about Passover, where I am writtin down everything about it. Shall you have any further questions about the subject, I am more than happy to help you.
Fear? No, I don't fear you, but I do fear what lies and half truths, like the one you created up here, can effect uneducated young people, who could seriously damage others due to this nonsence. Maybe you are the creation of one yourself, just don't know about it. This is my point, that if you don't know the truth, halftruth or banning the truth can be a serious weapon in the wrong hands. Just like every jocke is new to a child, the same way every information is a fact to the uneducated brain. All you need is a little salt and pepper (misslead and anger), and you have created the whole meal (anti-semitism). Fear? It is what saved us for thousands of years.
I am not attacking or verbaly abusing you. You have disrespected me, my religion, my traditions, and your own Bible too, which simply pissed me off. I had to let you know. That's all.
By the way, Moses went to the pharao and asked him several times to release the enslaved Jews from his country, yet he faild to do so. When he was told about the One God, he made fun of it and challanged Him. Than he was told again, that by failing to follow God's demand to free His people, there will be consequences. Each time the Pharao himself faild to act, it was followed by a plegue. There were Ten plegues - each one of them are the cause of the Egyptian Pharao's ignorance and ego. The Jews did not ask for any one of them, but were saved from, because it wasn't them who God wanted to proove a point to. The Jews were enslaved by the Egyptians, treated like animals, and even killed. This was going on for hundreds of years untill God decided to take His people out. The death of every first-born-child was the Tenth plegue. A devastating, horrible sight, but the only thing that was big enough to open the stubborn Pharao's eyes. If you think this was too much, just imagine how cruel this nation was to the Jews, and how many innocent children died untill this must have happened. It was the Pharao, and only the Pharao who could have changed this story by letting these people go. But he didn't. Even after his own first born's death, when he ordered the Jews to let go, he changed his mind again, and sent soldiers after the innocent Jews, who were WALKING IN THE DESERT to get to the land they were promised to get. Old peole, women, children. Not an army, just innocent people.
But the soldiers have failed because God devided the Red Sea for the Jews to cross just right before the soliders could do the same. Than, once the Jews were out and the soldiers still inn behind them, the sea fell right back to it's place, and ever since than the Jews have Israel, and Egypt cannot do a thing about it.
So yes, it is a huge success story for God. It is a reason for celebration. However, the Jews DO NOT celebrate neither the Ten plegues nor the death of any innocent person.
Passover is for us to remember the times our forefathers were in the desert and had nothing to eat. We must remember all of their sorrows in order to be able to appreciate what we have today: FREEDOM.
What we do, is simply remembering these difficult days, and God's mirracles by eating in a way our forefathers did in the desert. We have a nice big dinner where we tell the story year by year, and we stop eating foods we are so lucky to have all year long. Instead we eat only something we call the "matza".
Now after reading this, and hopefuly my other blog, I want you to tell me how can your writting hold any thruth at all.

And shell you still fail to see clear, let me ask:
How about the christians forcing nations into their own - made up - religion by war? Because even if you do belive the whole Jesus story, the religion was made up by people, not by God, neither by Jesus himself. Jesus was, in fact, an orthodox religious Jew. Celebrating Passover.
Here I must say, that I do not question the Jesus theory and I am not trying to disrespect other people's faith. Just making a point with no relation to what I believe.
  • shiningstar said on Apr 10, 2007....
I am not asking you to believe "my truth"  or anyone elses.  I am simply sharing what I know.  Just as Jesus said when he presented new truth I say do not be offended.  Jesus offended people because they too had their religion down pat,  knew it all and did not even want to hear what he said or taught about how to be free.  That is your choice to believe as you do and I do honor that.  But for me,  2 and 2 still  make 4 and using reason and logic and doing more than just reading someone elses truth I found mine.
  • ZsuzsiO said on Apr 11, 2007....
Yeah... no, hon'. There is no truth in all that nonsence. You are not talking about a way of looking at religion in general, or specifically. You simply took a holiday of one religion  and decided that it is about something it is not. You do that because you do not read, you do not educate yourself, and you are too ignorant to realize that people are not attacking you, but correcting you, so your "free mind" can develop in a healthy way. Judging on your answeres, you don't really care, and you are sure about being right.
Therefore, now I am using names. You really are dumb, stupid and ignorant. Jesus would probably slap you so hard, that you couldn't ever use your pie hole to anything else, but swallow your food. What a waist of human being....
  • shiningstar said on Apr 14, 2007....
I am afraid that this is what happens when people get their emotions flared into red hot over political issues or religious ones.  That is where conversations stop because of the name calling and slurs.  Logic and reason go out the door as a battle call is given.  Your beliefs are your beliefs and it is a God given right to exercize your free will to choose them.  My beliefs are mine and I am sharing them.  it is that simple my friend.  Do not war over your beliefs.  Embrace them in order to understand your own immaculate Self.
  • curmudgeon said on Apr 14, 2007....
Do you even know how the name Jehovah came into being? The ancient lettering that represents the word LORD is actually YHWH - we pronounce it Yaweh but since the writing is all consonants and readers are expected to know what the vowels sound like, but now we really don't know.

Anyway a German scholar many years ago translated YHWH the German way - JHVH or Jehovah.

Yes, what God creates God also destroys. We as humans can no more judge God's actions any more than we can judge the larger galaxy that swallows the smaller, thus possibly destroying entire star systems and killing all life in them. We are a tiny part of God's Universe, and although God remains with us in every moment in our lives, we're still subject to the processes He set in motion. These processes "rain on the innocent" as well as the guilty.

It is faith that helps us endure the slings and arrows of life.

And the Passover Story is really about the Faith that the Hebrews had.It was that deep, abiding faith in God that helped them survive the terrible plagues and so on that ravaged the land.
  • shiningstar said on May 07, 2007....
Jesus came to do away with the old so the people could be free.  You have kept the old and look what a world has been created because of the refusal to learn the new.  The new was and always has been that God is in all of his creations because the Life Force,  the Divine Intelligence is all Life.  It is the teachings of separation from this God that has kept people in ignorance of their own power within them.  It is the teachings of fear that have kept people from knowing of the love that surrounds them,  uplifts them and is closer than hands or feet and using their power to free themselves from religous rule and it's endless wars. Take another look at what Jesus really taught,  my friend,  and you will discover a different truth than what religion has and is teaching. The old was Jehovah and his prophets of doom and destruction.  He was not the creator of anything except a belief in his power to create people that would worship him blindly.
