DH had promised me not only a day out of town at an Orchid Show, but the following day with a walk along train tracks. Now, this latter is a special thing for us. The track is the rail line that runs through the Manawatu Gorge. It no longer carries passenger trains, only freight trains.
He and I have walked the bush track over and through the hill alonside the main road which is on the other side of the gorge. We've driven through the gorge many times, and have said to each other how cool it would be to be able to say we've walked the gorge on both sides.
So when DH saw that a service club has been allowed to organise the rail line walks through the gorge, we both thought NEAT and made a promise to do it. It's in three weeks time, and so we had started a daily get-fit walking routine so we (me) can manage the two hour walk.
But today, he mentioned how parts of the track are over bridges across the little gullies inthe side of the hill - and there's no solid anything under the track between the sleepers! "how will you manage that?" he asked.
Gulp!
We both know I couldn't easily manage walking across the swingbridge in the park downtown. As I crossed it I had to grab the hand-cables, and keep stopping to get my panic under control. I held other people up, and felt 'way older than my 56 years - add 30 and that's how doddery and uselss I felt right then and there...
The gorge rail line bridges don't have hand rails! I might manage it if... DH holds my hand all the way, no-one hollers out "Look at that!" so I can focus, and there's no-one backed up behind me. Otehrwise it will be a no go for me. And my lovely DH has said he'll not do it either this year, and will wait until some year ahead when I feel able to do it.
BUMMER!!!!!
