I was talking with someone about history not long ago, and I asked why all the history classes that we had in school seemed to only focus on U.S. and European history.  What about the rest of the world?  Certainly there was a lot of history happening in other places besides the U.S. and Europe.  My friend's comment was that that was where all the "important" history had taken place.

How ethnocentric!  Important to whom?  Do you think the Chinese give a rat's ass about the Knights of the Templar, or the Austro-Hungarian Empire?

That got me to thinking about how ethnocentric we are when it comes to art and music as well.  When we think of the great artists, we think of the European Old Masters and impressionists, etc.... DaVinci, Michelangelo, El Greco, Velasquez, Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Picasso, Kandinsky, Monet, Pisarro, Botticelli.   When it comes to classical music, we think of European composers... Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Tchaikovsky, Bach, Vivaldi, etc.

But at the same time that these artistic and musical masterpieces were being created in Europe, there must have been some amazing music and art being produced in the Orient as well.  Why do we, in the west, know so little about them?

Can those of you who live in Asian countries please enlighten us?  Who were your great classical music composers?   Who were your great artists?  At least, if I have the names, I can look them up on the internet.  I love Asian music.  I want to hear the best!

I'm tagging this so I can follow the discussion here. I'm really interested in finding some of this out too. Great idea for a post Kruuyai.

kruu- I now contend that the greatest civilization the world has ever known is China.

Just the other day I saw a documentary of how the "great" inventions of old Europe and Egypt, for two examples, were invented two thousand years before in China.

I've read critics books on music and painting, and these arts are barely mentioned, usually from Japan and China.

I would like to hear what people have to say also.

i'm coming to share beyond's view. however, i still know little of asian artists, composers, etc.

and kruuyai, whoever made that remark was obviously mind-bogglingly ignorant.

Kruu...that comment doesnt surprise me at all.....i was so happy that finally my daughter studied geography this year and she chose it as Pre-Ap subject.. next year in 7th they will finally have History...so i told , good , this is a Pre -Ap too, right? She told me..Its only Texas History. mom....

Now you tell me: how can you even only consider starting History with Alamo? I am really disgusted.....In Italy we start the first rudimental of History in elementery and in middle school we do it right: starting from Mesopotamia.

Yes, its there that everything started, teachers of America...Forget China.....

So this American ethnocentrism is no a surprise at all....i by myslef am teaching my daughter History already... ...i gave her book about Roma, Greek, we watch togetherr History Channel ...if it were for the school system she woudn't  even know there is a city call Ur ...she woudl think Rio Bravos is the cradle of humanity......:-)

ginsoul- Deep in the heart of Texas, there is little of importance but Texas history. And San Antonio is probably the leader.
  • gingersoul said on Mar 26, 2007....

Beyond......lol...its ok for her to learn about Texas..i dont want sound historian racist in reverse now...LOL..

but i think there must be a method and a prospective that need to be respected....i used to have some discussions with my ex because he wasn't merely interested in history... i used to tell him (and my daughter) that the history of the world is my own history....if i don't know from where i come from my knowledge of msyelf is limited

i am who i am because  i am made of all the steps that humanity took before me..

History really gives you the sense of your present, the rigth propspective to understand the changes of this crazy ever changing world......otherwise everything is only an happening right and right now without substance...

and in this substance there is room naturally for the history of Texas.....:-)

But it looks like that the American approach is (egocentric nation) to start from the Me and expand the concept to the outside of Me...i had a different approach..i learned first the outside of Me to understand better who i was..

ginsoul- Lets start all over. I didn't mean Texas was right, but that they are steeped in their own history. I was raised in New Mexico and we learned American and world history.

I love history as you do. In fact my favorite, and my strong point, is European history. My library is loaded with European history and very little on American.

Your points are well taken, and right, as far as I'm concerned.

kruu- Coincidentally, last night I saw where two thousand year old swords from China, still lusterous today, had a gray coating on them. With the use of an electron microscope, they identified the coating as chromium. Before this chromium was invented in Germany in the 1930's and the US in the 1950's.

Not much to do with composers and artists, but I thought very interesting.

kruuyai (long time no chat, eh?) this is an awesome post. Of course there were numerous great composers, poets, authors, painters, etc. in Asian. Sadly, I don't know the historical ones. I have read names of various people who were a great influence on the world of the arts or who added some new inovative idea but I don't remember them. China has produced some great poets and painters as has Japan and Korea. My only real connection with Chinese music is through The Twelve Girls Band who play contemporary and traditional pieces of both eastern and Western composers on  traditional Chinese instruments. I have two of their CDs and I really enjoy their music.

Hi hotaka.  Yes, it has been a long time, and it will probably be even longer before I'm back in full force.  The place I'm living for the next couple of months doesn't have internet, so I'm doing the internet cafe thing with super slow connections (I think that's how they make their money).  Hopefully, the situation will be better when I get to Prague in July.  When I do get back online, I intend to do some research on the classical Asian artists and composers and add to this post once in a while.  There seem to be anumber of people interested, and I'm interested enough to do the research.  I wasn't planning on this internet interruption.  Oh well, there was life before internet, and there will be life after internet (I think?)  BTW, did I tell you that I decided to go to Prague and get my teaching certificate?  Same school I signed up for five years ago.  They still had my application, so I didn't have to rewrite my essay.  Yippee!  Have you heard the Chinese School Songs from Taiwan?  They were recorded at least 20 years ago ("contemporary" Chinese music) and a friend had a copy of a copy.  It's kind of corny stuff, but I got to like it.

Many, many, many...too many to name. My personal favorite is:

Cui Jian grew up in a musical family in Beijing. He started playing with the Beijing Philharmonic Orchestra in early 80's, but he has tried every kind of music, and played with many famous people around the world, his latest adventure has even been rap.

Chinalang:  I was thinking, not so much of contemporary artists and musicians, but the old masters... like Asia's answer to Beethoven, Mozart and Bach... DaVinci, Michelangelo and Monet.  What is the history of artistic and musical development in Asia?  What are the songs that have been around for hundreds or thousands of years?  Whose paintings are hanging in museums?
