I’ve never been one to take afternoon naps, but yesterday, after a long walk in the fresh air, I was just plumb tuckered out, and felt my eyelids drooping while I sat in front of the computer.  So, I did the unthinkable.  I lay down and took a nap.  It was dark out by the time I opened my eyes again.  That’s the problem with me and naps.  I’ve read a lot about the benefit of the half hour nap, but for me, once I close my eyes, it’s going to be a good three hours before I open them again.  I have to get in a full sleep cycle.  But I felt so refreshed once I got my groggy self out of bed and up and moving.  I was up until 2 a.m. commenting on soulcast.  So, of course, with the sunrises getting earlier and earlier, I didn’t get in a full eight hours.  And I took an even longer walk in the fresh air today.  Hmmm, I feel a nap coming on…

How about you?  Are you a napper?

I love taking naps! Every Saturday and Sunday the four of us lay down to watch an afternoon movie and end up napping through the whole thing. My youngest son and I end up napping much longer than my husband and oldest son...but no one seems to mind! :)

napper here!  raising my hand.  I come from a family of nappers....(laying down after a big Sunday meal in various locations....in the recliners....etc) for one thing I just love it and for another thing it makes me feel so much better and takes the edge off that I just can't do without it.  I feel like a new person after I rest a bit (fibromyalgia) so it's just part of the deal with me.  My husband says I'm a professional sleeper!

I'm so happy you discovered NAPS!  They are so excellent.

My favorite naps are with my grandchildren after reading them some stories....laying in my big kingsize bed...all snuggled under the covers....them begging to lay on one of grandma's fluffly pilllows with a stuffed animal clutched under their arm.....rubbing their forehead till we eventually both fall asleep.  It's a magic cure for many things.  I highly suggest it.

moms & missu:  Thanks for your comments.  It does feel good, but I don't know if I can get into the habit.  I always feel like I've wasted so much time if I spend three hours sleeping during the day.  But i guess it's better to get re-energized and then get something done, rather than trying to plod through when I'm really tired.

oh i wish i were a napper.  i'm practicing so someday i can take an hour nap...now i'm like you and end up sleeping too long and messing myself up.  usually i don't sleep 3 hours, more like 2, but still too long.

someday i will get it right.

secret:  I envy those cultures with a siesta.  Then, when everyone else is doing it, you probably don't feel so guilty about taking the time out.  Oddly enough, in Mexico, which is supposedly known for siestas, I never knew anyone that took one.  But in Spain, everything closes down for four hours in the afternoon.  And everyone stays up very late at night, strolling up and down the streets and in the plazas... sweet.

I´m not a napper but if I am sick which I am very seldom or if I´m a bit under the weather I take a nap. It is very rare.
  • kruuyai said on Mar 25, 2007....
skald:  I have to admit that I like being sick once in a while, just so I can stay in bed all day and pamper myself.  I used to love watching Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood when I was sick (as an adult!).

Kruu...i nap only in the summer and a lot more when i am in Italy ......it must be the heavy air of the after lunch, the fact that there i go to bed a lot later at night,  that i go to the beach and that is tiring...

i love napping on a fresh sheet with the shutter down and the window open...a nice breeze coming from outside.....the noise of the streets is gentler on my ears and i can hear my mom in the kitchen ....

its so relaxing.....it brings me back to childhood...

problem is i nap for at least 2 hours!!.....i think its not more techincally called nap at this point...LOL..

  • kruuyai said on Mar 25, 2007....
ginger:  That's my problem exactly.  I get almost half a night's sleep into a "nap!"  I love the way you describe the afternoon naps in Italy.  It reminds me a lot of the summer afternoons I spent lying on my bed and reading in my little cottage in Sweden with the cool breeze coming in the window.  The air was so delicious and dreamy.  Yum!
  • missunderstood1162 said on Mar 25, 2007....
ohhh ginger....that is really prime napping you described there.....really cool crisp pillow......nice breeze...not too cold or hot......fresh smelling....like cut grass maybe.....maybe a light weight quilt to throw over your legs a bit of you need it.  ahhhhhhhh   These are kind of like the naps i have taken while on vacation or when I used to go stay with my grandma as a child.  Dreamy.  Sweet.  The kind that leave you feeling like you experienced something ULTRA good.
  • skald said on Mar 25, 2007....
Kruu. Good for y ou. The trouble with me is that when I am sick and if I have been to hospital I jump too soon out of bed and don't let the others pamper me for a change.
  • MissMimi said on Mar 25, 2007....
I used to nap every day. That was when I was very ill and didn't know it--well I knew it but I didn't want to acknowledge it. Very rarely I will nap for about 30 minutes.

Big time napper here! Even with a full nights sleep I am falling asleep by the afternoon. on weekends i can lie down and take it. Its a piece of Heven to me. Wish I could get paid for it lol
  • mobil said on Mar 25, 2007....
Long time napper Kruu, I found early the benefits of a nap. I brought a cot up
to my office and often napped there.

Funny thing is, you don't have to fall asleep, by just lying quietly with your
eyes closed, reaps big benefits in the stress department. Clearing your mind.

No need to sleep for hours, a half hour minimum and an hour max are about
    right.............thanks Kruu
  • gingersoul said on Mar 25, 2007....

Miss.....isnt't nice napping in this way? Especially coming from a morning at the beach ....

ahhhhh.. you made me remind my afternoon naps at my grandma house......she was living in the country ....even bette...she used to dry her laundry in the garden, close to her vegetable patch right close the basil, the rosemary, the sage....wonder why the sheets were always smelling so good...:-)

    Lovely memory....thank you Miss....{hug}.

perhaps oddly, i've never really been much of one for naps. for me, generally anyway, if i'm tired, i just sleep. having said that, i was up at 3:00 am today and was commenting for a bunch of hours before i was tired enough to go back to bed, which is where i stayed for a couple more hours.

Oh yeah, I nap...I'm very bad at it too. I get home really early on Tuesdays and Thursdays and I always nap. I'm dead to the world when I do. It's the most delicious thing ever. Yum!
  • Lioness said on Mar 26, 2007....
Strange, but I only take naps during weekends or holidays, when I get to stay home most of the time.. I can't stand being "timed" when at work, I get headaches. =)

Since I've been in the Caribbean; I have been taking a lot of naps, thats due to the weather being hot......... it really tires you out.

Not before children, but loving naps now.
  • beyondtheveil said on Mar 26, 2007....
kruu- Strangely enough, living in siesta country most of my life has not led me to napping. Never got into it. It also interferes with my nights sleep. So if I nap its an accidental happening in the comfort chair on weekends.

After yesterday, I feel the need for a nap today!  Today is the first time since I don't know when, that I didn't make my bed right when I got out of it!

I took naps when Little D took hers up until she was about 2.

I have always had a problem sleeping through the night. I average about four hours a night and sometimes that just isn't enough, so the almighty nap comes in handy. I might rip off an hour or so on the sofa and then I will have enough energy for the rest of the day.
  • RollingC said on Mar 26, 2007....
I remember when I was living in South America the daily siestas... afternoon naps... which really started as the traditional going home and having lunch break... and included a short nap afterwards... Very Healthy Habit IMHO.  It explained why people worked so hard and long...offices usually stayed open later to compensate. Unfortunately the times are changing and everything is too fast paced lately, although it's still widely practiced in the rural areas and somewhat in the capital...but not as much now.

I'm a napper. My father was a napper. So is my uncle. I'm willing to bet, their father before them (I never met him, he died long before I was born).

I don't indulge much anymore with the kids, I find that my only free time is during nap time and I covet my free time. My wife is a convert on the otherhand, that was since we had children.  She'll go down with them.

  • AlisonMarie19 said on Mar 26, 2007....

I'm with you kruu. If I take a nap, it's usually 3 hours or so. That's not much of a nap!! More like sleep! :)  I find that if I only lay down for 1/2 hour to 1 hour, I end up more tired than I was before I laid down! If I had a clock that started timing 1 hour from when I feel asleep, maybe it would work, but it usually takes me 20 minutes to a half hour to fall asleep in the first place! I love naps. I do feel like a bum sometimes though, and wish I would have done something productive!

Thank you all so much for your comments.  It looks like we have a lot of nappers in the crowd.  I'm sorry I'm too tired to respond individually tonight.  I would say I feel a nap coming on, but it's already after midnight, so I guess when I go down, I'll be going down for the count.
  • harriedpsychmajor said on Mar 28, 2007....
I used to nap a lot, especially between classes while at college... and much as I hate to admit it, during class while in high school.  I don'tknow what it is, maybe it's getting into a full-time work routine, or maybe because doing so would destroy my sleep cycle for days to follow, but I just can't nap anymore.

I took a sick day yesterday, today, and I will again tomorrow. And I still can't take a nap. Sometimes I'll still nap when I'm sick but it doesn't look like I'll take one today.
  • kruuyai said on Mar 28, 2007....
harried:  Oh,, gosh, you don't even nap when you're sick?  Me... I sleep all day when i'm sick.  Unless Mr. Rogers is on TV.  lol
  • openclose said on Mar 28, 2007....
I absolutely have to take a power nap in the afternoon.  I normally go out to my car, set the alarm on my cell phone, curl up in the back seat and sleep for about 15 - 20 minutes.  If I don't , I'm literally falling asleep while I"m working.
  • harriedpsychmajor said on Mar 29, 2007....
Kruu: Ah, yes. You enjoy Mister Rogers too, huh?
  • anonymous said on Aug 30, 2007....
Big time napper!  But I find my best naps are when I sneak one at work after lunch, but the floor was too hard, so I was given a yoga cushion that was designed for naps!  No joke--mrtasana.com.  It puts your body how it should be.
    I love it!
  • kruuyai said on Aug 30, 2007....
openclose:  I think probably everyone should take a little snooze after lunch.. especially with a wheat based diet like we have in N. America.  It seems pointless to try to concentrate on work when you can't even keep your eyes open, doesn't it?

harried:  Oh yes.  I just watched a bunch of youtube videos about him.  I posted one of them on beyondtheveil's post about Heroes.  It showed Mr. Rogers addressing the US Senate.  Very moving.

anon: lol... I find it rather amusing that someone feels the need to comment anonymously on such a tame subject, but whatever floats your trigger.  You're lucky they let you lie down for a nap at work.  I think we should never stop napping after kindergarten.
