The Purpose of the Program
To attract outstanding graduate students to NRC giving them access to world class research facilities that may not be available within their respective universities.
To foster an enhanced collaboration between NRC and Universities.
To highlight NRC profile as an outstanding employer of choice, for those seeking a career in a research environment.
What is the program?
The NRC Graduate Student Scholarship Supplement Program (GSSSP) will provide scholarship supplements to selected outstanding graduate students. Scholarship Supplements of $5,000 (Master) or $7,500 (PhD) per annum will be granted for up to 4 years. Those Supplements are added to adequate basic funding received by the student through a scholarship or other sources.
Who is eligible?
Outstanding graduate students who are registering/currently registered in full-time study at Canadian universities in Masters or PhD programs (primarily of sciences and engineering disciplines) and who are interested in performing the majority of their thesis research activities in an NRC Institute.
In order to be considered for the Program, students must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada.
You must also be a recipient of, or expect to be a recipient of, a minimum of $12,000 in scholarships or awards through a national scholarship (i.e. NSERC, CIHR, etc.), a provincial scholarship (i.e. OGSP, NATEQ, etc.), a scholarship from a university/foundation or a research grant from your thesis supervisor.
How to apply?
Appropriate matching of research interest between the NRC Institute, the university professor supervising the thesis and the student are a prerequisite for a candidate to be nominated for selection.
Students interested in being nominated for a supplement, should advise their thesis supervisor and contact NRC researchers in their area of research interest to explore possibilities. Subsequently, the student may be asked to submit a GSSSP application form to be considered as an Institute’s nominees to the Program Competition.
When?
NRC initiates the competition in March. NRC Institutes submit candidate nominations to the GSSSP Program Coordinator in April. The GSSSP Selection Committee meets in June.
Program Scope
Approximately 14 graduate students will be selected through a competition held yearly. A complement of 56 recipients will make up the Program at maturity FY 2005-2006.
