I see all this stuff on over population and I'm wondering will natural reproductive selection be in our near future? China already has the 1 kid rule and with the United States having such a problem with immigration and space, people etc.,. Where do you see reproduction going in the next couple of years? Now you can pick te sex and eye color of your kid you can even screen for pre exposure to diseases now. This is a scary fronteir were entering I think.

i absolutely do not see the one child rule ever happening anywhere in the US, ever. this would represent such a huge intrusion into civil liberties that everyone would rise up to fight it.

The world isn't overpopulated, we've been over this ad nasuem.

It will NEVER touch the US without some huge disaster that causes wide spread starvation and even then its more likely that they will find clever tax break ways to encourage what they want rather than out right banning.

I think the selection part could happen somewhere down the line though.

    Think Gatica

  • silverwhisper said on Mar 20, 2007....
yes, but why would such a selection process begin?

It already has ed. I was watching GMA(Good Morning America) over the weekend and their was a family that had colon cancer as a gene in it and the father having lost a couple of relatives to it decided that he and the wife would have their genes tested before procreating. A peice of the embryo is loped off and the genes are screened for genetic diseases. The fertilized ones that were diseased were destroyed and the ones without the gene were the ones they implanted. IT took and they had a daughter.

Then they went and did this all over again and got pregnant with another child. SO if we keep along this route more parents will elect for procedures such as this b/c they can't bare the thought of caring for a sick or deformed child. And remember since these are still expensive they might get like breast implants and become readily available(say 5,000$ in the next 10 yrs or a payment plan affordable)soon. Think Gatica ed. It might be the wave of the future.

And I don't exactly agree with Gattica. I don't think genetically engineered people will be better than your average everyday home grown individuals. It is us that defines who we are and our experiences that make the difference in our lives.

That's pretty naive.  The only true problem with GATTICA thinking s that it leads to over specialization.

Well in my neighbors case...it would have been a good thing...lol
But seriously, I can't see limiting us to how many children we have happening here in the US.  Then again I didnt think I'd see alot of other things happening here in the US either (wont mention them), so I guess you never know.

Penis Patrol In America.....roflmao....thats what it would take.  It will never happen in America, most men, myself included enjoy the sexual adventures women have to offer and as long as they are offering men are going to accept and thus many many children.

So do we cut the balls off of all men after they father 2 children to assure it does not happen again?...Do we clip all females after their second child?...think about it, never going to happen.

If selective breeding was an art form here in America...do you really think our President would have been the seed chosen at the time...lol

Stem cell research is the key to a lot of good for the world over.  Population control...we already have senseless Wars, is that not enough for now?

HH, ah, so you mean we're going to become even more of a plutocracy than we already are? OK, that i think i can understand. but still, it's a long way to go from this to gattaca, isn't it?

I was honest that Santa Claus does not exist. So 12yrold,10yrold,and 5yrold are aware who is really spending the money and buying the presents. So what do your kids beleive? How old were you or your kids when the illusion of Santa was lifted?...
Today was full....
questioning people and how selfish they are when it comes to break ups, involving kids...
of parenting...
Hard Economic Times.. The best gift a parent can ever give their child - is simply themselves :)...
