A favorite social event for me is a potluck supper.  Some will think immediately of church socials.  Thats the idea!

Lets play a little here.  Imagine everyone could drop in for an afternoon of fun and friendship.  In my head there would be a cacaphony of folks identifying each other.  How much of a good time could we have (those of us who havent seen pics) figuring out who each person is in real life?  The laughter, the surprises and sometimes the shock would be worth a million hugs or more.

So the questions are:  What would you bring?  Why?  Who are you really anxious to meet?  How would you get here?

i'm bringing 2 lasagna's botoni.  one traditional and the other a vegetable version.

i know you aren't so fond of veggies, but this lasagna might make you change your mind.....

i'm bringing these because i make them often, and they heat up real well....

i guess i have to get there by plane.  i'm hoping to fly with moms and daily and jenna and mamie.  we're all pretty local to each other, and would have a great time on the long flight.  either moms or i will rent a car.  i'm good at driving forward as long as moms can do reverse.  lol

i can't wait to meet my sweet friend mobil and give him a huge hug.

and another hug to ginger....as i pour us a glass of red wine to toast your hospitality with.  cheers!

Secret.....Those lasagna sound wonderful......I m looking forward to a conversion!  Better plan an extra day if you re bringing Daily.....she ll want to see Flake too.

Hi botoni! I'll bring along some home-baked treats, maybe some chocolate caramel brownies and cream cheese brownies. I love to bake and I don't get to do it very often any more.
Well, I don't know whereabouts you are, but I love road trips. It would be so much fun to meet everyone face to face, and hug the stuffing out of them. :D
  • gingersoul said on Mar 15, 2007....

Bot.......here i am.......like Secret, i had to take a plane...a looong flight from down Texas....but it was worth it......i was expecting a visit from Missunderstood and Bloc but i think they are still travelling....well, maybe they will do a u turn and come up here with us.....

First of all, i will have to hug Secret...{{{{hugs}}}}...i can't wait to see Mobil too...hope Moon will make it  and Polar and Moms too...oh, i cant wait to see everybody!!!

Ok, so since my friend has alreday brought lasagna (i was going to prepare some) i luckily opted for a tray of "antipasto"....Italian word for appetizers: sliced salami, prosciutto, bresaola, olive of any shape and color and cheese with bruschetta. Plus i prepared a huge plate of fried calamari and fried artichoke that will go down perfectly with my red wine. For dessert, naturally, tiramisu and chocolate.

Where do i put all these stuff?

Oh, i brought you a present to thank you for the warm hospitality: a cowboy hat.  Hope you like it........:-)

  • botoni said on Mar 15, 2007....
MM..........chocolate caramel brownies you say!  Have I told you you re my favorite?  Calgary is the place MM......(Canada your know)....just up from the 49th parallel.  Directions....go to Mobil s house and come directly north.

GINGER......fried calamari!!!!.....You can put that in my hands....the rest will be wonderful on the big table in the dining room but the calamari is aaaaaaaaaalllll mine!....Hve I told you you re my favorite?......Thanks so much for the cowboy hat I ll send you a pic of me in it when someone teaches me how to post a pic to SC.
  • polarheart said on Mar 16, 2007....
Botoni, thanks so much for the invite - I'll be there with bells on! (LOL)

I will bring a true South African dish called Boboti (strange how close that is to your name) - it is a mince dish, and very, very delicious.  I will also bring turmeric rice with sultanas in, desicated coconut, onion and tomato salsa and sliced bananas.  These are all things we eat with Boboti (bo-boo-ti).  I can let you have the recipe if you like?

Ginger, your Italian platter sounds magnificent and the calamari sounds wonderful.  I have not seen calamari on one menu here in the UK - perhaps in the more expensive restaurants.  In SA we use to go to Ocean Basket and my favourite was crumbed fried calamari with a little butter garlic dip!

I have never cooked and artichoke - care to teach me how?

Botoni - to post a picture you must open a free Flickr account.  You then download your photo onto the Flickr account.  In order to place the picture here at SC you need to use the Flickr button above the comment / post box.  I wrote a blog about this once.  Will go and find it and place a link back here for you.

  • polarheart said on Mar 16, 2007....
Sorry, Bot, I lied - no blog re Flickr.  But if I can remember correctly, once the photo is downloaded on Flickr there is a file name under the picture, which you need to highlight and copy.  Then when you come back to SC you click on the Flickr button and paste the file into the box that opens.

hm...i think that i would probably bring a vegetarian curry that i developed last year along with the obligatory basmati rice, complete with cloves and cardamom pods.

i don't think you've encountered my friends zayda or ladygamer, botoni, but i think they're the two i'd be most interested in meeting. bloc and kelly also come to mind: their politics and mine are very similar so it would be nice to see who i've been teaming up alongside these past months.

  • skald said on Mar 16, 2007....
Well Botoni, I think I would have to fly and then either drive or take a train. I would love to see you and the country you live in. To see Polar would be great, then Qinger too and Kruu, Copsunited and Silverwhisper, Creative, countRollo , queen, that would be interesting. If I have not mentioned someone please don't be offended What I´d bring let that be a surprise.
  • botoni said on Mar 16, 2007....
Polar.....boboti sounds wonderful!  Yes!  I d love the recipe.  Post it here if you d like or if you prefer you can e-mail it to me at jmbjaq@hotmail.com.  Turmeric rice!   omg....my mouth is watering.  A short while ago there was a South African restaurant here...it has unfortunately since closed.  The food was incrediblly good but I think they chose a bad location.

Silver.....curry sails great with me!  You lot are determined to turn me into a vegetarian!  My version of vegetarian is as follows.  Cows eat grass and grains (vegetation) ergo beef is merely reconstituted vegetable.  Oops!  Am I in trouble?

I ve just started peeking in on zayda, ladygamer, bloc and kelly but I havent got a really good handle on them yet.  So far so good.

Skald.....We re really less remote than you might think.   I m not exactly sure about departing Iceland but there are daily flights directly to Calgary from many European cities.  Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Helsinki would likely have direct flights.  Now if we re going to do a side trip to Flake the route is a little more complicated.  Surprises!  Oh I do love surprises......please no tinned spaghetti though....hehehehe.  Your guest list would thrill me too!
  • kruuyai said on Mar 16, 2007....
I'll be there with my home made deep dish apple pie with extra cinnamon and cloves.  Hope it survives the transatlantic flight!
  • gingersoul said on Mar 16, 2007....

Skald....LOL.....its theh second time you call me Quinger.....its cute though.....and i would be trhilled to see you too, Iceland lady....{hug}....

Calamari are a food from the Gods....they are soooo good...

Bot.....my friend, you and i are connected for life now....LOL.....but here comes the big divider: do you eat them dipped in the marinara sauce? Or you eat them only with sprinkled lemon?

This, my dear, is the difference that sorts out the true calamari lover by the other ones...

I will wait for your answer before giving you mine...

Polar has already answered ...she eats with a garlic dip...never tried...i might....:-).

And frying artichoke is really easy. My mom taught me this very traditional and easy recipe.

These are the famous "Carciofi alla Romana"...Fried Roman Artichoke .

First you have to make a so called "pastella"  made mixing water, flour, eggs, and salt and pepper.

You need 2 eggs  and 1 cup of flour. Whisk until creamy but not too dense, not too liquid either. If its too dense add water, if its liquid add flour.

Then you take your artichokes, peeled them, tossing the fluffy things that are bitter when you eat them. You have to cut away the little spiky spurs.

Cut them for the leght, using a little bit of the stem but not too much because it tends to be too hard. Let them marinate fro 30 minutes in water and lemon so they are less bitter and softer.

Pat them completely dry and dip them in the "pastella" and fryi them in hot oil. Preferably extra oil o olive, because its lighter and healtier than other oil. They are divine....uhmmmmm.

  • botoni said on Mar 16, 2007....
kruuyai.....oooooooooooooh!  deep dish with extra spices!....Have I told you you re my favorite?

skald, polar and ginger....did I remember to tell each of you you re my favorite too?
  • botoni said on Mar 16, 2007....
Quinger my buddy!  Its lemon all the way!  Although the garlic sauce does sound tempting.  I m off to the market to find an artichoke that recipe sounds just divine!  Damn....I ll be a vegetarian anytime now!
  • gingersoul said on Mar 16, 2007....

    Bot.....oh, my Bot....lemon here too......LOL....

You have to see the expressions of any waiter here when i ask for calamari WITHOUT marinara sauce on the side...its the basic staple here...then i need a lot of lemon on them so i use the slices of lemon that are in my water or tea and use that ones too...lol.....my American friends look at me like i am an alien....i make them try my calamari lemon style and they dont like them at all...

Well, too bad for them! Only my ex husband learned with th etime to appreciate them in this way.....but he lived with me in Italy for 8 years so he had some advantage....:-0

    Now run at the market and buy some zucchini, eggplants and potatoes too. And fry them in the same way. They are divine as well.....{hug}

    Quinger...again?........grrrrrr :-D

  • secretlife said on Mar 16, 2007....

lord but i don't like calamari...

    good thing i like antipasta!

my favorite is artichokes tho!  and i will agree that makeing eggplant in the egg/flower mixture is DIVINE!

So botoni, are you pouring?  because my glass is ready for a refill!

  • botoni said on Mar 16, 2007....
OOOPS....couldnt resist the Quinger.  I think its cute and adorable!

Your recipe sounds very much like Japanese tempura which I love.  When I make the batter for it I use very similiar incredients to yours except I use corn strach rather than flour.  Give it a try and see how you like it.

Lemon!  Yay!  All alone its a favorite flavor for me.  I adore it in hollandaise, or my grandmothers recipe for lemon loaf, fresh squeezed on fish & chips, or as an add in to soups and stews.
  • silverwhisper said on Mar 16, 2007....
botoni: o, i'm a confirmed carnivore, truth be told. however, in deference to the fact that a number of soulcasters are vegetarians, i figured it would be safest that way. me, i'm the kind of guy that likes to find new & creative ways to describe just how rare i like my steak. :>

and i think all of those folks i mentioned are well worth reading, truth be told.

Botoni:  I'm so sorry I'm running a little late to the social.  Little Daily has had me a bit out of sorts.  She wants to come to eat some Cereal, but I told her no kids were allowed.  She threw an all out tantrum!  I told her that the girls wouldn't like to have a screaming tot with them and she said that Secret waved to her once...broke my heart for a second. Whatever, I'm over it...I'm coming, don't worry.

I will bring my famous Antipasto.  However, it will not be topped with Tuna.  I NEVER eat seafood!  <gag>  I've NEVER had it!  Oh, I'm also bringing bags of ice.  We'll have to stop to get it, hope the girls don't mind.  I hope you all don't mind me chewing on ice all day?  I'm bringing it so I don't impose on your ice despenser, lol!

I'm really looking forward to going to the hotel with everyone for drinks before the shindig!  God knows I could use a few today!

I've made the arrangements with Secret and the girls to fly on up.  Smart girl, Secret, she knows I won't rent a car and actually drive it!  I call shotgun though, lol!  I'm bringing my puke bag and hope you have a trash can ready for me to drop it outside your place.  I've got a week blocked off to see "Flake" but I think I'll only need that one extra day!

I will see Mimi, Ginger, Momsrock, CW, Polar, Kruuyai, Silver, Hairspraygirl and of course I can't wait to toast you!  I really hope Bloc will arrive, but that could be dangerous.  Ginger and I might be fighting over Mr. Yummy, Bloc, and I'm married so that wouldn't be cool and he is too!

    Let me know if I can bring anything else!  This is the Friday fun I've been waiting for...thank you {{{MUAH}}}

P.S.  If Ginger hits anyone in the face while she's talking...I might pee my pants laughing at Miss. Italy!

Oh, i put lemon everywhere....and yes, my pastella is similar to the tempura....i might try the corn starch next time...it wilsure add extra texture...

Please, give something to drink to Secret before she tosses away all our precious calamari......Secret, hands down...lol...

Mimi...LOL..thats exactly the answer ALL my American friends give me when i describe what exactly are calamari....they say "No tentacle in our mouths"......dont you really want try some? Bot and I will give you a little piece with lemon on or you can try it with Polar's garlic dip.....come one. be brave..you will thank us...:-) ...

Daily........LOL...and you are too funny....oh so Ginger will be the party pooper, isnt'it? Wooshing away the guests with her rotating arms, her sword like hands, her tentacular (since we are talking about calamari ) flying fingers?....LOL...

ok, better bring extra underwear then.......Miss Italy....i like it...:-D

Silver.....my friend describes 'rare' as a particular cut he refers to as 'steak tappi'....it s the part of the flank where the testicles tap as the animal runs.  Served as soon as its carved off the leg!  Just remember you re my favorite.

Mimi...of course you re my favorite but dont tell the rest.

A week to see Flake!  The thought of a week astounds me!  If we spent that long there we d know everyone on an intimate basis!  I m not sure I can keep the van running for a whole week to keep me supplied with my essential exhaust fumes.  After all getting gas when your in Flake is a 20 mile journey to the nearest filling station.. I m sure I mentioned your my favorite.

  • gingersoul said on Mar 16, 2007....

    Secret...psst...its called antipasto....not antipasta....:-)

Because techically is an "ante pasto" (before meal, being ante pasto two Latin words). Here in America though everybody thinks that means "before pasta".....and techincally is alos tru ebecause usally pasta is the firs entree of one meal....i found it amusing....

    Ok, educational chapter closed.....lol...

Anyway, i agree with you...you can never have too much antipasto...did Bot finally give you something to drink?

Umm... sorry I'm late. I had a little too much to drink on the plane with the girls. I baked you a few desserts but I ate them before we got here.... you know how I am with sweets...

I want to see everyone. I think I would know ginger and mom as soon as I saw them.

  • gingersoul said on Mar 16, 2007....

  • botoni said on Mar 16, 2007....
Another confession....I picked that 'You re my favorite' thing off a Reba show.  She kept telling each one of her kids they are her favorite.  I like it cause I think everybody should be a favorite!
  • mom said on Mar 16, 2007....
LOL, I do that with my kids.  I tell them they are my favorites. They know I tell each other that and accept it. :)  You are right we should all be each others favorites
  • botoni said on Mar 16, 2007....

mom.....I ve now read your post regarding dried ferret.  The poor little feller!  While strolling down the street one chilly October day an adorable ferret came toward me.  He was shivering and 'sat pretty' for me to pick him up.  The poor little guy was lost.  We took him home with us and he made himself very comfortable.  Toured the whole house, floors, walls, ceilings and drapes n the first 11 minutes.  Our cat and two dogs didnt take kindly to him.  Fortunately with the help of the spca his owners were located in a few hours.  The thought of drying him didnt come to mind but I think the dogs would have voted in favor.

  • mom said on Mar 16, 2007....
Aren't ferrets fun?  I love them but they are messy.  We had another 2 get out and run away.  Probably heard the stories about the dryer.  So we don't have anymore ferrets.
  • dailyachesandpains said on Mar 16, 2007....

    MOM!!!!  There you are!

    <BUUUUUURP>  Sorry, keg stand!

Momsrock:  Sistah!!!!  Kid free, isn't this so much fun!  I'll wait for you to catch up with my drukness and we can start singing all of our favorite songs, lol!

Oh sugar, I forgot, who I would most like to meet.

[hands botoni some freshly made pesto]

First of course, our dear host is on my list of people I want to most meet since he's opened his marvelous house and patchwork kitchen to us.

Then, I most want to meet Silver, Mimi, and Ladygamer.
  • botoni said on Mar 16, 2007....

Daily get off the keg!  You ll tip and then we re in trouble!  You re fragile after all.

Mom.....ferrets are totally entertaining.  That little guy had me in tears with his antics.....well, tears and a few panic attacks.  A ferret weaving through grannys precious statue of the Three Graces had me worried for its life....the statue not the ferret.  Speaking of the three graces......I finally have an image for Mom, Momsrock and Daily......You re obviously the Three Graces.  I think their names were Goodness, Gracious and Goodness Me.  Ooops now I m the one who s had a little to many bloody beers and a sip or two of grape kool-aid to top it off.

  • dailyachesandpains said on Mar 17, 2007....

Brox welcome aboard!  The partys going well indeed and you re the perfect new addition!  Help me keep some of these girls in line!  The neighbors are getting restless.

In all the fuss I ve forgotten my contribution.

My version of Caesar Salad.  Contents as follows.

    Baby spinach

Real bacon bits made at home from thick cut luscious slabs of maple cured side bacon.....cooked open air on the bbq to add flavor and reduce fat.

A blend of cheeses....provolone, mozzarella, reggiano, aged old cheddar

Croutons from day old crusty bread....coated in ex-virg olive oil, sprinkled with lemon pepper and oven roasted.

Dressing.......blender mayo basics.....eggs/lemon/light olive oil....emulsified to perfection....thick and superbly creamy seasoned with anchovy (sorry for those who dont like it but you ll never know its there)  red pepper flakes, tabasco, worcestershire, much garlic!

Completed with bite size brined and slow roasted chicken breast.

Served with parmesan garlic bread rounds.

    SL: you're very welcome!

botoni: you're a very gracious host! Don't worry, I'll have some of the girls in hand in a jiffy.

Does anyone like frying eggs with milk, very little olive oil? It's delicious!

  • botoni said on Mar 17, 2007....

  • mom said on Mar 17, 2007....

  • botoni said on Mar 17, 2007....

daily.....you want to curl?  OMG.   Do you have any idea how long it takes one of those rocks to get from one end of the rink to the other?  You could do your nails while you wait!  OH all righty!  Ya wanna curl!  We ll curl!  Just get your foot in the hack, bust out your broom and we re away!

Mom......Here we go on the size thing.  Mine s bigger than yours!  I ll show you mine if you show me yours................hehehe

  • dailyachesandpains said on Mar 18, 2007....

    what's a hack?

I never knew what the hell curling was until I first saw it on the Olympics!  We actually watched it, threw money down on it even though we were clueless!

Yes, i want to curl! Let's just see who can get it to the bullseye first.  Play in 2 lanes at the same time!  Sound good? lol

    Daily

  • botoni said on Mar 18, 2007....

daily......a hack is an indentation made in the ice of the curling rink to put the toe of one foot in.  Without it you would not have any ability to throw the rock because you would just slide around on the ice.   That stuff is mighty slippery!

In case you didnt pick up I m not a great fan of watching curling.  I fare a little better actually when actively participating.  Watching for me is like observing paint grow or grass dry.

  • naturalboi said on Jun 13, 2008....

Hey, I know I'm way late getting to this party, only like fifteen months late, but I'm here now.  It was a long drive, like almost 2500 miles.   My car? Well once I rolled into town I had to find a repair shop to get a few things done.  I developed a major oil leak a few hundred miles back.   They said they should have it ready in a couple weeks so you're stuck with my lame ass for a while.

This is freakin' awesome.    This is the first time I've been outside the good old u s of a.

Everything I brought is gone though, sixdays is a long time to resist eating .  I did bring my blender though, and stopped at the market down the street to pick p some frozen fruit. milk and yougurt.  I'll be out on the patio makin' smoothies.

So many of the people I would like to meet are already here, so way cool.  Oh. tell gingersoul that calamari sprinkled with lemon & garlic is the way to go.  Lemon is good, but add a touch of garlic and you've just entered heaven.

    love nature and stay cool

  • botoni said on Jun 13, 2008....

    Hey boi!

You wandered into one of my favorite places.  The folks at this party are shiz!  I'm sure we re all still up for some smoothies.  They're one of Zaydas' favorites and she has a huge number of recipes.

I'll pass the word to Ginger regarding the calamari but I'm not gonna tell her I had it for lunch today.

You just settle your butt in on the deck and enjoy Canada.  We ll even get Daily to give you some curling lessons now that she's an expert.

Gonna be interesting to see if any of the original party guests show up again.

  • mom said on Jun 13, 2008....
