I just read an article that basically says one of the most effective advertising techniques is using sex or eroticism. I would like to know what the SoulCast community thinks of sex in advertising.
I mean, sure, it gets attention, but does it really compel you to buy what is advertised? Is it really "effective" in that sense?

corinthian: it doesn't for me, but i suspect the objective in such ads is very simply for people to remember the product at all. there are after all thousands upon thousands of products being advertised.

I honestly don't think it does. It turns me away from a product that uses sexual explicit advertisements. I did do a paper about ads and Christianity and the effect of ads. I think the "sex sells" excuse is just that and excuse. I think products can do the same amount of marketing if sex wasn't the forefront of the ads. -

Sex appeal draws attention. The result could be sustained interest or revulsion, but people generally at least look.Whether or not that translates into actual sales ought to be more rigorously studied, in my opinion. -

I always joke about sex being a HUGE selling point for me. Whenever an Herbal Essence commercial would come on with the girl washing her hair and getting off I would think i'd get turned on for a second, but end up just laughing at how obviously they just plopped female orgasims into a shampoo commercial. It's an attention grabber but never truely gets me to buy anything. This makes me think of one great Family Guy moment (old school family guy). It was a commercial for Pawtucket Pat's Beer. "Pawtucket Pat's Ice Cold Beer. Buy our beer and hot women will have sex in your back yard." -
