in a recent blog entry, polarheart asked what various soulcasters look like. i responded that i don't personally tend to form a mental picture of most people but i do tend to associate the voices of various actors or personalities w/ some folks.

however, here are the ones that i have formed*...

alienated: will forever and always in my mind be reminiscent of kevin costner, oddly enough. and if you thought i was gonna say marvin the martian, i've got a trout w/ your name on it.

bloc, to me, has a voice that is reminiscent of rob lowe's: maybe it's just that i liked the west wing but there's a certain earnestness that just works for his persona.

CW in my head has the same voice as ina garten (of the barefoot contessa on food network) although w/ more of the characteristic flattening of the vowels that i associate w/ those living where she lives. i was already headed in that direction when she once observed that she sorta resembles ina garten in the first place.

daily for some reasons sounds vaguely like helen hunt--helen hunt was very good at creating a very breathless quality during mad about you and that seems to fit w/ the tone of her blogs and comments.

wrong accent, i know, but otherwise, for me GS unmistakably speaks with the voice of alex kingston, formerly of ER: i see the same kind of capacity both for composure and urgency.

kelly will always speak w/ the voice of my sister, in my mind. the resemblances are actually a bit creepy, sometimes: same sense of humor and wit.

mimi is voiced in my head by a strange combination of jennifer tilly, who i normally dislike, but just a tad snarkier in delivery. i know she says a mature woman but i always read so much playfulness and youth in the way she posts so it seemed to fit.

mom speaks with the same voice as brett butler when i read her comments.

MR will to me always be associated w/ the voice of sandra bullock. i cannot explain why, so please don't ask.

sean renaud is voiced by d. l. hughley to me when i read him.

sorry folks, but that's really as many as i've got. i don't generally associate speaking voices w/ other men, i'm afraid, so i hope the gentlemen won't be offended. ladies that i've missed, it was hard to do several of you justice. in all cases, my apologies for the omissions.

so what kind of voice do you associate w/ other soulcasters?

please note: i will cheerfully delete any comment that's flamebait, no matter what else might be in it. no exceptions.

ed

*i am removing from these lists those whose speaking voices i actually have heard, either due to having met or at least spoken on the phone, in addition to those for whom i've never really formed a clear voice in my head.

Hey, Ed, you forgot sweet! I have an alto singing voice, so I suspect my voice is a bit lower than Jennifer Tilly's. And I don't have the, I'll call it baby-ishness, that hers does. My extended family lives in northeast Ohio, and I've been told I've acquired a slight southern accent living in southwest Ohio. I think my accent is very generic--like a radio news reader.

There are three soulcasters whose voices I've heard, and honestly the others I haven't given a lot of thought to. Let me think on it.

Ed, now this again is very difficult for me, but I will say that I think you must sound a lot like Keanu Reeves because in my mind's eye you look a lot like him.

I will give the other's some thought and come back later.

Polar....hey.....this is amazing......because i picture SW exactly like you do....are we telepatic or what?? :-)

SW.....yes....i pictured you physically like him (tall and slim and dark hair and eyes) so the voice comes too ..just with a higher pitch and faster pace.....it must be your Matrix like ability to be in 300 blogs at the same moment or you sword ability in troutsmacking...go figure....:-)

yes Keanu has this stoner look but  hey......better looks like him than Dave Spader or Carrothead..or George Bush......LOL..

Btw......Kingston for me, eh? Sorry....wrong...lol.....but interesting though.... may i ask the reason of this association?..... :-)

  • silverwhisper said on Mar 13, 2007....
GS: yeah, i knew i'd probably get that one wrong, but in the performances i've seen of her, she's had both the compassion and warmth as well as the kind of insight you seem to wield so often. that's pretty much it.

    [shrugs]

i think i'll refrain from commenting re: keanu otherwise for now, though. :D

    ed
  • polarheart said on Mar 13, 2007....
Well, Ed, it was meant as a compliment as Keanu has a large female following and I think his voice is not half bad either.

I could have drawn some conclusions re the "stoner" bit, but I thought I ask the source. . .see I'm even starting to talk Matrix language!

Ginger - we must be on the same wave length, but I was REALLY surprised to hear that you are blonde and not olive skinned. . .but I DID imagine you to have long straight hair tied up in ponytail at the back of your head that bounces when you walk!!
  • gingersoul said on Mar 13, 2007....

Polar...........lol..i know, i know...i get that look of surprise often when i say i am Italian....everybody expect Italian women to be mini Sophia Loren...(i wish, i wish)...but the ponytail hair are there when i am at the gym...and they do bounce when i walk....thank you...;-)...you didnt tell me if i got you right in describing you .....

    SW....thank you so much....i couldn't have a better explanation......{hug}

Why are you not happy with our Keanu connection with you? Its your voice so different?

Mine is of an higher pitch of Kingston....i can define it better telling how it is not: i dont have a raspy, deep or monotone or nasal kind of voice.....people describes it as a warm, very variable in tones, musical and uplifting kind of voice...and naturally very sexy..because of my accent ....LOL......its not my fault.......*wink*

ladies, i know it was intended as a compliment, and i didn't mean to sound so ungracious: thank you. :>

Ed, I never thought about the voices of us all here!  Thanks for the Helen Hunt, lol!  Throw in the Boston accent with it.  I have a thick one.

I think of Ed as Johnny Depp, not as a pirate though, lol!

I can't hear Gingie's accent.  I don't know why, but I just can't!  Could it be because of the people that live in the North End in Boston, the slick Italian's that drive me nuts?  I don't want to hear her like I hear them!  They're always shouting and swearing up a storm!  I can hear Polar's accent, but I can't yet put a famous person with it.  I'll have to come back.

It can be difficult voicing out what most Soulcasters sound like.

For me, the image of their sound byte is clogged up by whether or not they are male or female, what they've said, and how they've reacted to issues in the past.

Other than stereotyping, it's tough to imagine, for example, Ginger as a  fast-talking  blonde Italian, or Zayda's voice at a lecture.

Not knowing the relative ages also messes up the picture a bit.
  • momsrock said on Mar 13, 2007....
Ed, Sandra Bullock is actually pretty close...but the similarities are more in the way she say things...and we're both a little quirky... My voice is a little higher pitched, softer and my father thinks it's whiny. Whenever I used to ask a question he would say, "Now ask me again without whining." 20 years later, my voice instantly changes when I see his name on caller ID...LOL  To be honest, I've never thought about peoples voices...I'll have to come back for those.

You are right about the Barefoot Contessa.  My family tells me that they see me in her by the way she acts and looks.  My hair is shorter and blonder than hers though.  I've always been told I have a pleasant voice.  I'm soft spoken and you would definitely tell I'm from the Midwest.

The last time I did that I went from middle of my back length hair to a pixie cut. It was shocking to most people who knew me, but I've had pixie cuts like that before in college. But right now, my hair is past my shoulders. And it's wavy/curly depending on the humidity and what i decide to do with it in the mornings. :D

Zayda I am sorry, southern drawl cool but you have an exact way of writing and it's quiet yet succinct?? does that help! oh and sharon stone is sexy in a way.  The words people use are quite helpful in providing us all with a voice... I think this is where it comes from.

  • Zayda said on Mar 13, 2007....
Okay, what I sound like. A friend of mine says that there are moments when I am pure southern belle (I can after all turn spit into a 4 syllable word without blinking an eye.), but that usually comes out when I'm tired. Other times, he says my accent it much flatter, with what he associates as flattened vowel sounds from the Mid-west. Yet there are other times, I am pure Jersey girl, especially when I say words like talk, dog, or sure.

The chief problem with anyone placing my accent or the way I talk is that I pick up accents, dialects, and languages very easily because of the rather nomadic lifestyle I have lived. (And I tend to talk like the people I am around most often.) I began to learn to talk when we lived in Massachusetts but my language developed when we lived in Alaska, where the accent well is mixed, especially on a military base.

    [blinks]

Lucy, I don't think I have ever had anyone call my writing succinct before. That's really interesting.

  • Lucytorial said on Mar 13, 2007....

I'm bad with voices, realy I am. It's much easier for me to imagine what somebody looks like and what type of personality they have than trying to imagine what they sound like but if I have to take a guess on some Sc's:

silver: I guess you have the male version voice of my gr 11 maths teacher. Crystalic almost hypnotysing.

ginger: I think has this sexy voice, coarse and teasing.

polar: I can kind of imagine the SA accent with a hint of british.

Mostly if I have to think about voices of people I mostly just read about, I imagine their voices being emotionless, like that funny guy in the back of the class that never means to be funny but just says things in a dull way that makes every word that escapes his mouth hillarious.

    Jst me :)

polarheart - a low, sultry, ultrafeminine voice like a former neighbor of mine who also sang the blues... a woman with a lot of soul

silverwhisper - a cross between Peter Lorre and Clark Kent, depending on the subject matter... his persona, therefore his voice... mirrors what he is talking about.

daily - I can hear with an All-American Sandra Bullock kind of voice

skald - I can hear her voice in the mid range, and I can hear the accent... sort of a slow and deliberate but gentle voice... can't think of any famous people to compare her with... she is a class act all on her own.

there are way, way too many comments for me to make specific responses to everyone.

MR: and this just in... :D

i'm quite flattered by a lot of the choices people are making for me and intrigued by the sandra bullock/MR thing--that's just freaky!

kruuyai: so wait, when do i sound like peter lorre? i don't recall asking rick to help me recently... :D and which clark kent: christopher reeves or the kid on smallville?

Kruu - thanks for the lovely compliment.  I can imagine you to have a very "intelligent" voice. . .I dont know how else to put it.  I think you speak clearly and your pronounciation is impecable.  I imagine you have voice like the one you described for me.  I dont like to hear recording of my own voice, but have been told by different people over the years that I have a "radio" voice. . .now I think that's something I like to do. . .but late night shows.

polar: your welcome, and thank you (I think I got those in the right order)

ed: Kathleen Turner, huh?   I used to think she was the female lead in Raiders of the Lost Ark but I got put straight on that one.  I know she was in Body Heat... can't quite place the voice, though.

  • silverwhisper said on Mar 14, 2007....

lol... whenever I hear my voice in a recording it sounds way too high and thin for my liking.  But I think it's getting deeper with age.
  • lioneljay said on Mar 14, 2007....
GS, not Janice at all. If you've paid attention to the shows that are being shown on A&E now (first season still), the character that made me think of you was the woman mob boss in Italy whom Tony met when he went there on business. Her voice, though, is too high for my perception of you. I'm thinking more like Meg Ryan with an Italian lilt.
  • gingersoul said on Mar 14, 2007....

Kruu........now that i have seen your face i think Kathleen Turner's voice is too deep for you....i think a Meryl Streep would do better .....

    LJ......oh, thanks goodness...LOL.....

Btw, meawooo....that woman is a hot number, isn't she? I liked her a lot...and .....guess what? you are pretty quite close if you combines Meg Ryan's voice......pretty impressive, LJ.......*wink* .

But SW caught also the "urgency" in my voice......unless he is intending that he is picturing me talking superfast......LOL....which actually i tend to do when i am upset or i need to go to the point......:-)

  • kruuyai said on Mar 14, 2007....

ginger:  that's a little more like it, but still not really on (as far as I can tell).  I can't think of any actresses that sound the way I think I sound.

daily:  I'm revising my answer for you..  The voice I'm really thinking of for you is Sally Field.  Especially when you say,  "LMAO"  I can just hear that in her voice.

Okay, so here goes my summary...
Silverwhisper - voices are very hard to imagine, as I'm a "picture" person.  The only voice that I can imagine is Daily - I imagine her voice similar to that of my very best friend from school's voice.
Her name was Dale-Marie (and her nickname was Daley), and thus the connection.   :-)

As for other voices, I'm afraid I can't imagine it really.  Faces maybe - but voices are hard.
  • silverwhisper said on Mar 16, 2007....
kelly: one never does know. :D

danette: yeah, see...i'm not a picture person a lot of the time--there were a few blogs where people were wondering what everyone looked like, then bloc created one where he asked that people post pics. b/c i don't think in those terms, this seemed like a good idea. :>

I just lack this bit of imagination :P  Funny, I haven't wondered what most of my online friends' voices sound like - and that got me thinking, and now I keep imagining.  When I listen to the radio I try to connect it to a blogger I know.  No luck for you yet, sorry - will let you know if I hear a resemblance :D

    Something Rotten by Jasper Fforde

Thursday Next, Head of JurisFiction and ex-SpecOps agent, returns to her native Swindon accompanied by a child of two, a pair of dodos and Hamlet, who is on a fact-finding mission in the real world. Thursday has been despatched to capture escaped Fictioneer Yorrick Kaine but even so, now seems as good a time as any to retrieve her husband Landen from his state of eradication at the hands of the Chronoguard. It's not going to be easy. Thursday's former colleagues at the department of Literary Detectives want her to investigate a spate of cloned Shakespeares, the Goliath Corporation are planning to switch to a new Faith based corporate management system and the Neanderthals feel she might be the Chosen One who will lead them to genetic self-determination. With help from Hamlet, her uncle and time-travelling father, Thursday faces the toughest adventure of her career. Where is the missing President-for-life George Formby? Why is it imperative for the Swindon Mallets to win the World Croquet League final? And why is it so difficult to find reliable childcare?

Just a few leftover scraps I decided to combine to make a post. :-)...
