“Bushanol” is not the answer to global warming.  Ethanol has been around since the 1920’s and it is no panacea in the fight to slow global warming.  Most scientists agree that  the energy to produce it is more than the energy it returns and there not significant reductions in greenhouse gasses when the entire production cycle is considered.  While the Bush administration is at least looking at alternatives, they appear to be lacking in imagination.  We need bold decision making which is a concept that is sorely lacking at The White House.

Ethanol does not get us away from the combustible, gas driven engine.  It only plays into the hands of the oil companies and large auto manufacturers.  If the public is led to believe that ethanol will help solve climate issues they will be less like to push for more stringent emission standards or to outright demand new technologies.  Once again, the large profit making conglomerates have maintained their sway over national policy and divert the nation’s attention away from the real issues at hand.

While new ethanol technologies may offer some hope as far as wining America from foreign oil, current methods of production only detract from the world’s food supply.  A short time ago the president announced that the U.S. was on the verge of major energy producing technologies.  Was he referring to ethanol?

With all of the energy possibilities available, why is The White House shying away from the development of those technologies?  Where is the push for solar, wind, small scale hydro and fuel cell technologies?  Several years ago a company was working on small, solar based home electrolysis units that would allow the homeowner to produce his own hydrogen.  This would then provide the hydrogen needed for the fuel cells that would power the home with electricity.  A by-product of this process is heat for the home and the process is pollution free.  Where are these devices now and why are they not receiving national policy priority?  It brings to mind the scientist, Tesla who was reported to have developed ways to harness free electricity from the air.  Supposedly, his designs were confiscated and were either destroyed or lie somewhere in the bowels of some federal building.

The Bush Administration is still approaching climate change as if it were some future phenomena that can be addressed in another twenty years.  This is not true and this lack of action will adversely affect us all.  While the public’s awareness of this issue has grown and there is increased awareness of the need for alternative sources of energy, there is still a lack of any urgency regarding the matter.  It is obvious that the direction being taken by the Bush Administration is one that is still controlled and guided by the oil corporations.

Hmm - producing a volatile, easily combustible element like hydrogen in a private home...in a nation where most home fires are still caused by people falling asleep with lit cigarettes and space heaters left on? Any idea NOW why no one's behind that patently idiotic suggestion?

It's so easy to go around blaming the Bush administration for every ill. If global warming is really such a pressing issue, and so many people are "for" doing something about it, why aren't they moving forward of their own accord? Because it's easier to blame a President they don't like than to actually do anything about it.

And give me a break about the "evil" corporations. They're the ones - not some hippie commune vegan organic farmers in Upstate New York - who are going to provide us with all the gee whiz new technologies that will help us adapt to the changing climate.

If you think that reducing CO2 emissions is somehow going to keep the climate from changing, think again. There isn't a shred of scientific evidence that even the "rate of change" will slow. And so what if it slows down, anyway? Sea levels will still rise, populations will still be dislocated, and species will evolve from one form to another. We're just putting off the inevitable. Why not simply let nature take it's course and rebalance itself? Life will go on.

Ethanol has been promoted as an alternative to oil since the OPEC oil crisis during the Carter Administration. Every President has gotten behind it to some small degree. Only now moronic Bush critics are calling it Bushanol.

Just goes to show you how full of manure these utterly partisan global warming zealots are.

Cur-@seeing- mostly agree that there's a lot of hysteria but let me jot another view. I drove  my last truck over a million miles with no mechanical problems. No big deal maybe, but "ethanol" especially E-85 eats up rubber and fiber gaskets, and as of last year it gelled quicker than diesel oil.You might not realize the expense and difficulty of repairing and replacing gaskets in a 850 cubic inch diesel engine. The end result of some decree that I must use this new fuel is that it will cost the consumer more in the short term. A badly thought out quick fix to a possibly non existent problem.

Bush is willing to change our fuel source because oil for fuel is no longer the number 1 use of oil....everything we use is manufactured from oil....if every car on earth ran on something else....we would still be dependant on oil....oil is not going to go away....the earth is going to get warmer....and colder...over and over again....and we cant do anything to change that...nor are we doing anything to cause it. 98 % of Greenhouse gas is water vapor....humans do nothing to increase it...uh oh! global warming spotted on Jupiter someone contact Al Gore! heads are gonna roll for this!

Actually, I blame all of the administrations for the past 30 years. People can do things but major changes require the products to be readily available. When we go go to Wally World and pick up solar panels for less than a hundred they change will happen quick. Hey, people use propane at home and there are propane fuel cells but they just can't seem to get to the market even though they work. Yup, change is always inevitable. By the same token, what are we doing to prepare? If Katrina is any measure then we are all in for a wild ride.
