Earlier today I downloaded a demo version of some software that claimed
to convert files from one format to another. This sounded promising so I
installed it and was pleasantly surprised to discover that it did indeed do
what it claimed to or at least it demonstrated that it could do what I
wanted if I were to purchase the full version.
I was giving some thought to that when I realized that I could no longer
hear anything from my headphones which was a little strange as I use them in
preference to the PC speakers and they had been working just fine up until the
download. So I tested the mic (it’s a headset) and that was kaput too.
Being fairly average in my PC management abilities I decided to try the
basics. I unplugged the headset & rebooted and then reconnected but that
made no odds.
Slightly alarmed by now and wondering what had happened, I checked
that the PC speakers were still working which they were, then got on with
checking all the settings for the headphones, all of which claimed to be just
fine and dandy but still no sound. Not only that but as far as the PC was
concerned the headset was fully operational…
So I uninstalled the software and rebooted and repeated all the checks
but to no avail. The headset was still as dead as a dodo.
Becoming slightly frustrated I checked that the driver was up to date
which it was. I was starting to want to bang my head against the desk in
frustration not least because no working headset had other unpleasant
implications I really didn’t want to think about.
And then it hit me. If the download had messed up something I hadn’t been
able to find all I had to do was turn back time to before then.
So one system restore later I held my breath and prayed while my heart sounded loud in my ears and…
Success! I have sound again. =)
