short version: the FAA is considering foregoing their windows vista-based computers in favor of linux-based computers and the new google apps premier version (which includes 24/7 support), citing interoperability problems on vista w/ lotus notes and cost. long version here.

commentary: coming on the heels of last week's decision by the DOT (department of transportation) to ban "upgrading" their systems to IE7 and MS office 2007, this is quite a win for both google and linux.

    Ed,

You know, by now I hope, how much I HATE Vista.  With all the problems I've had using it at home, I would only HOPE the FAA changes if they're having issues.

I hate it soooo much that I hooked up my old computer last night and I'm using it right now.  I'd finally had it with Vista.

Unless Vista provides radical necessary improvements that are considered drastic and essential to existing systems, why bother upgrading to a new system that still needs to be fine tuned.

I for one will probably wait it out till they fix all the quirks in Vista before shifting to the new system.  Besides shifting to the new system means incompatibilities to older reliable specialized programs that I've been using for decades now and I don't see any urgent need to shift operating systems simply because there are no major advantages except contributing to the already fat profits of Microsoft.

daily: seriously? holy crap, why's it such a PITA?

FD: o, i quite agree, but it's a very different thing when a government department and their hundreds of computers makes that decision so publicly, esp given that M$ has a stranglehold on government IT needs.

The above is one reason, Ed!

I can't download my itunes, or even music.  itunes is supposedly working on a patch for it.  I can't download anything, really.  It just sucks.  I guess it's good that the firewall protection is like nothing else, but seriously, I can't do anything even when I turn it off it still acts like it's running!

So, here I am, still using the old PC.  Slowness is better than what I go through with Vista.  My Husband is picking up some 'thing' today where I can run the two computers and go back and forth between them with only having to have one monitor.  I can't wait!
