**I was commenting on Kruu's post about her problems with hemorroids and bam.......i ended up talking with Beyond about advertising. I decided to move my comment here for not invading Kruu's post**.

Thursday is March 8th.
International Woman's Day.

What better way to celebrate, in my opinion, with showing you how, in 2007 and in our so called civilized Western society, women are still treated?
In the link, you can see a controversial ad from the last advertising campaign of the world famous fashion stylist duo Dolce & Gabbana.
I know, i know..they are Italians......what can I say?

The protests againt this ad are mounting by the minutes.

My question for you: what do you think of this ad?

Do you think its just a creative, intellectual artistic expression and for its nature can't be judged, condamned o censored?
Or, in the contest in which this picture takes its own value and reason to be, it should indeed censored being advertising still responsible for their owm messages?
This is the picture of the scandal: here

the message i take from this ad is that women wearing D&G clothes are more likely to be attacked by men. if it were just the woman and the man holding her down, that might be different, but the onlookers...

the protests are, i think, completely justified.

SW....exactly....those onlookers give the picture a really creepy setting....as you said, only a man and woman in the frame wouldn't have had this strong impact...

i know that this is exactly what they wanted.......lots of publicity....lots of gossip and talking .......and only for this motivations this picture is even more offensive and stupid.....

This ad is offensive and stupid, you're right. And it may well sell a lot of jeans or whatever it is they sell. It's very negative, in my opinion. Negative and ugly.

I hate this ad, and you're right, Ginger...  Lots of publicity and people talking!

I agree with all of you!

their adds from jan/feb this year were horrible too.  very violent...blood, knives, dead bodies ...and of course naked women.

these ads are offensive and i have no idea the message they are trying to deliver except shock value.  i think these fasion people are just going for pure shock value.   I'd be interested in seeing what they say about their message as I have heard they have hired a new publicist.....

I would find the ad objectionable even without the onlookers, but they make it especially sinister.  I will never buy anything from that company.  By the way, I'm honored to have my hemorrhoids mentioned on one of the most popular blogs in soulcast!  lol
  • momsrock said on Mar 05, 2007....
I agree, I don't like the men standing around them. I will still buy their perfume...but I don't like the ad :)
  • beyondtheveil said on Mar 05, 2007....
ginger- The first thing that struck me was a group of men watching attentively to intellectualize if rape was a proper behavior.

I wouldn't buy from them if they were selling new pick-ups for fifty per cent off.

And I'd really like to have a new pick-up.
  • yani said on Mar 05, 2007....

ok! THAT gave me the creeps!

the men were watching as if they're waiting for their turns!

I wouldn't want to be that attractive.

Whoe's genius idea was this? They think women want to be raped?

  • mommyof2 said on Mar 05, 2007....
Isn't an ad supposed to give you some idea of what they are selling?
  • lioneljay said on Mar 05, 2007....
So, GS, why did you not complain about the obviously gender-bashing photo that was number 5 in the series of 7 to which you linked? Could it be that it's because it was the man who was being overpowered in that image? Just wondering. :p
  • botoni said on Mar 05, 2007....
A totally reprehensible ad lacking in sensitivity.  I find it incredulous that anyone would respond in a positive manner to taht ad.

WHOA! Gang rape...not okay. Way Way NOT okay.
  • queenparanoia said on Mar 05, 2007....

you know upon seeing this ad at first it would have been okay if the guy and the girl were alone but when there were onlookers now that is offensive...

damn and those shoes were hot...

  • LadyGamer said on Mar 05, 2007....
    I too loved the shoes.....darnit.

An Italian designer posted an add that looks as if it resembles their community thousands of years ago? It does look like she is about to be ravished and the other guys are standing around either watching or awaiting their turn at bat(Think Alexander) which might not be a good thing!

What are they selling again Jeans, the flexability of her outfit, gang rape, orgies. I can't figure it out!
  • gingersoul said on Mar 06, 2007....

Well......of all the comments received excuse me guys if i first have to answer to LJ......

To start ....sorry, I dont see your point......number 5 doesn't tell me anything that might offend me as woman...i see it more as a mere provocation, depicting a sexy game more than anything. I think  that in this contest is more an intellectualization of the dynamic between man and woman where these dynamics are moved to the terrain of a sexy game of sub and dom....but if the rules are accepted by both parties ...where is the violence?

Instead the pix i chose tells me more that sexy game....it screams frankly of instigation to rape.......i think D&G pushed the provocation a little too much and the whole thing fell out of theirs hands...i see here mindless and stupid provocation that put itselfs out of the rules. An image that is oblivious of the tight connection betweem imaginary and message.

This message speaks loud....and i reacted to it based on my personal and political beliefs.......that's why i asked your opinions.......since i think to know your positions a little bit though i didnt think for one moment you didn't have a reason for your question....:-)....

So i would like to know: did you ask me to consider pix 5 as an example of me being close minded to the point of not seeing that that woman is raping that man imposing he power to him like the men in pix 7?

Or, to corroborate my point of view, you say number 5 and number 7 have the same message....violence or sexy game being indistinguishable ....so basically i shouldn't make too much fuss about #7?

You know, your question actually broaden up the whole topic to which ones are the boundaries, the rules, the limits of mutual accepted actions between man and woman. And we can discuss them for hours....

When a message is so out there though...splashed in magazines and seen by thousand i question even more vehemently the validity of that message...for as understanding i might be i can say it was way off style...:-)

While I think the discussion on this is very interesting and certainly warranted, the suggestion that something like this be banned is a touchy subject.  How do you regulate advertising?  Where do you draw the line?  I agree that the ad itself is way over the top and subjects younger readers of whatever magazine this ad is in to the idea that rape is "cool" or accepted.  The company never should have printed this, based on their own set of morals (if they have any).  But there are very violent shows on primetime TV.  Should we ban those as well?  Don't get me wrong.  I think it might be a good idea to pull a lot of the violence off TV and print.  But who's going to decide what to ban?  And what if that particular group sees it as a political opportunity to wield a different kind of power.  Okay, I'll stop now before I sound like a total freak.... LOL
  • lioneljay said on Mar 06, 2007....
GS, you see rape in a picture that looks to me like a hot couple having consensual sex in public. Nothing in the image suggests an improper use of force or coercion. To my eye, as you discerned above, pics 5 and 7 are quite similar. Either one could be interpreted to suggest a link between power and sexuality that is inescapable. So if one argues that one pic depicts a deplorable view of one gender, it's only honest to say the same about the other.
  • gingersoul said on Mar 06, 2007....
    LJ.....i understand....
  • pickersplock said on Mar 06, 2007....
Well, it doesn't make me want to go clothes shopping!
  • gingersoul said on Mar 06, 2007....

Mimi....more stupid than anything....it blows my mind how intelligent people as you migth perceive advertising professionals would come up with this..all that money in models, make ups, photographers, location rents, all that freaking ad machine...for this? .

Daily.....yep, they reached their goal....see, we are talking about them even here..:-)

Secret..i didn't know you were so into Italian fashion..lol...yes, they changed their PR lately...probably is the same one who suggested them to keep going with thisi lovely campaign....

Kruu...really? Would you find it questionable even without those onlookers? Well......i don't know..i wouldn't  go that far...as i said to LJ......as long as the message is showing a mutual accepting of the rules within a sexy game i dont find it necessarily offensive...but this pix for me is beyond that......

Moms...their perfume is great.....i bought it to my ex many years ago and i got him hooked to it.....it smells so good...

Beyond...lol..i am glad to see you understanding the not so subliminal message of that picture......but, hey..... refusing a hefty 50% off a brand new pick up is a big committment for a man......are you sure?...teasing...:-)

Yani..evidently they think we women are going to line up to be raped ...but when it will happen at least we will be happy because we will be dressed in D&G....

Mommy....have you been able to see the dress? well..between the model's  pain expression and him grabbing her wrist....i have to say..i got completely distracted....

Bot......its really touching a lot of nerves in my country..i have read today that many are asking the cancellation of the campaign .....D&G answered defending their creative freedom...and they said there was no negative message in it...

LG...you are right..way, way not ok....

Queen.....i know...those shoes are great....:-)...i went to your post...lovely shoes you have there.....i am another shoe fetish...

HHater....you are so right....they could be adversting everything except dignity and respect for the women...

Silly.....you dont sound like a total freak at all...actually, you raise important questions and advertising abnormalities have been indeed the starting point of this discussion in Kruu's blog......i was explaining to Beyond the excessive use of sex and naked women in Italy's ads.....and how this sexualition and objectivation of the woman has alreday reached dangerous limits perfectly symbolized by this D&G ad.....believe me....this is only the point of the iceberg....

I was explaining how different is (still) the publicity here in Usa...that is still ages behind some publicity in countries like Italy, Spain, Germany and Europe in general....when i moved here i noticed immediately thisdifference...and anytime i come back in my country it hits me ....

    Picker.....i agree with you ......:-)

giner: well thanks that you liked them i guess soulcasters should shop for shoes together that would be fun!!!

Before I scrolled down to see the woman I thought the men were standing around a fish. I don't like that ad. I don't care what they are trying to say. One man and a woman looking empassioned might be sexy but this looks like violence and domination.
  • gingersoul said on Mar 11, 2007....

Hotaka......you know?....i had the same spaced out sensation when i was analyzing that ad....it really looked like she wasn't even a woman anymore....but a piece of meat.....a fish...whatever but not a woman...

wonder if SeanRenaud had read this blog and had seen the ad my ...it should be enlightining for his post about women and rape.........

  • hotaka said on Mar 15, 2007....
I haven't read his posts. I saw the titles and wondered if I should jump into the fray or ignore them because they are just attention getters. Then again, the arguments could be interesting. Still, I don't like what the titles stand for. I don't know about Sean though.
