My mother gave birth three times, all times by cesarean. She says she just couldn't push. A friend of mine recently had a baby, she chose natural birth. She was offered a painless birth but chose to endure the pain. I asked her later how bad the pain had been and she said it was just a bit more intense than period cramps.

I've never had period cramps, I've never had a baby but I think its got to hurt more than that? Am I right? We've all seen them, the movies of women giving birth...it doesn't sound like a whole lot of fun, then again, those might be over dramatic.

So I ask the women here that have given birth. Was it easy? Was it painful? Was it painless? Did you just forget the pain once you saw your baby?

Childbirth is painful, hard work. The beginning of labor is not intense at all. I didn't realize I was in labor until I had been having contractions for probably six hours. I thought it was indigestion. At the end, it's very very hard work, and your body just sort of takes over. It's an amazing process, really. I thought the way my body just seemed to know what to do to get the job done was a marvel. Is there pain? You bet there is, but I remember more how much hard work it really is.

Labor pain is bad, but it's not the worst pain I've ever experienced.  I have a pretty high tolerance for pain.  But before I had the surgery to correct the problem, I had regular bouts of kidney pain that would literally have me doubled over in tears.

silver: no she did not, she did everything most women do. Had regular checkups and gave birth at the hospital...nothing unusual.

MissMimi: I have a high tolerance for pain too. I thinks this plays an importan role for most women. Some women say they didn't really feel any pain and yet others said it was almost unbearable.

It is different for everyone and has a lot to do with the positioning of the baby and whether or not you have back labor. I had extenuating circumstances so I don't think my experience is a fair assessment of how painful it is or isn't. I had an unusually short labor so there was no time to work up to the pain, it just hit me all at once. My son was face up instead of down which is more difficult and painful and he was too big to begin with so that obviously made it worse. But, in my opinion, back labor is the killer... but not everyone has it.  I have had a lot of prior sports injuries- dislocations, broken bones, torn ligaments and surgeries to correct some of them so I didn't expect the first labor to hurt as much as it did. After the first time around, I wasn't thrilled about a second child. But I had a longer labor and he was in a more common position and not half as painful as the first.

allaround- I've had three children....or was that my wife?

I was present in two childbirths and although it seemed worse than cramps, there was no screaming or complaining like on tv. She must be a trooper. I heard more from her during contractions than the delivery room.

I could bare my labour pain for quite a long time.  It eventually became quite sore and it also becomes very tiring if it lasts for ages.  It was about 24 hours from the time that I had my first pain to the time my son was born.  I eventually had to have an emergency C-section because he did not progress in labour and his oxygen levels were dropping.  By that time I already had an epidural and was able to be awake for the operation.  If I get to do it again I will ask for an epidural much sooner than I did, because I was soooo tired in the end.  Next time I'd like to have a bit of a sleep while waiting for baby to arrive.

The pain for me felt like someone had tied a big band around y stomach and was pulling it tighter and tighter to its limits.  I can remember that it was sore, but I cannot remember the pain magnitude at all.  The good thing about that pain is that you can console yourself that it wont last forever and that soon it will come to pass.  Not many people have labour pains for longer than 24 hours.

Mine was awful period cramps.  I asked everyone "When will I know, how will I know?"  I always got the SAME answer "Oh, you'll know!"  No, I didn't know I was in labor until a lightbulb went off in my head that I was close to my due date...duh!

6 hours and she was out!

Delivery is different for each and every woman. For me it was the most painful thing to experience. The drugs...ah the drugs made it so much more tolarable.
Oh wait the 1st was aC-section due to his premmie birth. The next 2 hurt like hell till the demerol shot kicked in. The 3rd was so huge 1/2 of my body responded to the shot and the other 1/2 felt as if nothing happened. Hubby beckons so I'll be back later! Oh and the joy afterwards surmounts the pain felt before. It feels like a shit through the wrong hole, constipation but multiplied....

I will always remember the line from an episode of Roseanne.  I don't remember the context but the description is perfect.

labor for me felt worse than cramps.  I had labor for 18 hours without progression and ended up with an emergency c-section anyhow.  the second one was a planned section so i had no labor (thank goodness).  But it was way worse than cramps.

Your friend is lucky.  LOL.  Very lucky.
