You know I figured that have 70 odd dedicated readers and probably more than that in real readers.  So how many of you are willing to assist me in my bussiness ventures?  I'm not asking for money.  I'm asking for advice.  What is the best company to get shirts embroidered?  Bussiness cards?  Pens?  I know I'm not the only person on Soulcast facing these challenges so I'm asking for help?

VistaPrint does pretty good business cards.  They have standard and premiere choices.

Colorful Images does business cards but they don't have as many options in terms of the style of the card.

Kinko's also does business cards but they can be a bit pricey.  (I had some done there several years ago and really liked the quality of the ones.)

You can buy business cards to run through your printer, but the edges will always have the slight perforated look because you have to tear them apart.  Although you can get some that you cut apart.  (Those can be a pain too.)

I'm not sure about pens. One of the companies I do consulting work for recently got new pens with their logo and contact info on them. I'll ask the person who ordered them tomorrow.  It may have been a local company here though.

clothing embroidered w/ your logo and pens for same are a bit weird sometimes. i'm afraid i don't know of any off-hand, though. should i find one, will let you know. what kinds of quantities are you talking about?

i used vistaprint for personal business cards last time i did a job search--it worked out pretty well, IIRC.

Go to Kinko 'cause they are good or if you can go to Things Remembered.

SR, I would find a good sales promotions representative with whom you can develop a good business relationship. Ask around; chances are someone in your community or nearby has a good reputation in this business and he or she will be an invaluable aid to you.

Sure, you can spend hours and days of your own time researching cut-rate prices and deals on the web, but in the end the few dollars that you might save will be far less than your time was worth.

I'm in the process of doing the same thing: looking to promote my business a little differently. I spent a few hours poking around on the web and drew the conclusion that I described above. My time is worth far more than the few dollars that I might save - or not, if my choice of supplier leads me to someone who can't deliver on time or in the quality that I require.

    Sean,
I don't have a clue as to why this is popping in my head... a local silkscreening company??

I believe Staples also does business cards.

I can't help you with what you listed, but if you ever need advice on website stuff I can surely help.

I have used Vista Print for business cards or made my own.  You can design your own screen printed shirts at zazzle.com

    Hope this helps.

@bloc - what sort of website work do you do?
  • bloc said on Feb 28, 2007....
I do backend software development. These days I mostly use ruby and rails.

You can also make your own business cards, if you want.  I would also go to an embroidery shop to get the shirts embroidered, or a silk screen shop.

Depending on the type of clothing item/shirt you are looking for L.L. Bean does custom embroidery

You can also contact the companies in your area that do all of the little league uniforms or church group shirts...they usually do business cards, mugs, pens and all of that too.

Thank you for all of the support.  Damn we should network more often.

Sean, what kind of business are you in or starting?
  • SeanRenaud said on Mar 01, 2007....
The fingerprinting industry. In California its starting to get pretty big because everybody who works with children, and a bunch of assorted others, Real Estate, Notary Publics and EMT's to name a few.

it's a total scam. By that I mean that my wife is a teacher and she had to get her prints done at least 4 times. Each time she had to pay something like $80. Why the fuck did she have to do it so many times? Just to make money for someone?
  • mom said on Mar 01, 2007....
bloc- you are married?  I don't recall ever reading that before.  That is interesting, so you have kids too?
  • SeanRenaud said on Mar 02, 2007....
The ones runnning the scam are the government.  You get fingerprinted when you move school districts or do something different.  Example

If you are a school teacher who is also a boy scout leader and a little league coach you need 3 sets of prints.  That can be done in ONE day.  Its bullshit.

The FBI gets 24 dollars, the Departmen of Justice gets 32 bucks.  I get 20.

On the off occasion that somebody has to get 2-3 sets of prints I just charge 30 for the roll fee cus honestly I feel a little dirty triple charging for something that should be one service. But I can't do a damn thing about the other 156 bucks.

I was also unaware that you were married.

My personal take is that its a government fundraiser.  Instead of raising taxes somebody realized that since the majority of people getting printed (multiple times) work with kiddies nobody would fight it.  You want the children to be safe don't you?  If we don't do this 30 times Mary K might get with your teenage boys, or worse yet  your girls.  They then cued the evil laughter and all the sheeple fell ni line like they were supposed to.

I've mentioned my wife before, but in comments on others posts. I guess you missed them :)

I have no idea why she had to get so many because she's only worked at one school district. She told me at the time, but I've forgotten the details.
  • SeanRenaud said on Mar 02, 2007....
One was when she was a student teacher, I think another when she upgraded to sub and a final set when she became a teacher.

Teachers get hosed by this deal. I have no questions or arguments there.
