In any school, college or organisation, few people have beautiful handwriting, some have average and many have bad handwriting. If one person can write beautifully, why can't the others? Has it got anything to do with the type of writing instrument -the pen- that he or she uses or is there some other reason? Everyone wants students to write beautifully and even though they do a lot of writing practice in Cursive books there is no improvement in handwriting. I basically feel that it is the Grip that makes or breaks handwriting. Parents and teachers want children to write beautifully but they do not know how to go about doing it. This is the reason why schools and colleges do not have a course on Handwriting Improvement as there are no teachers in this subject. Handwriting cannot be a neglected subject anymore. It is hard work along with good handwriting and presentation that will help students to score more marks in exams. In every family there is at least one person with a shabby handwriting. So I have spent much time studying my own handwriting and now I am presenting below methods that could help all of you with a bad handwriting improve the same
ITS ALL IN THE MIND
nYour mind plays a very important role in helping you to improve your handwriting. Now let me give you an example. Remember the first time you rode a bicycle. The ride in all probability was wobbly and you might have fallen down umpteen times. Later on you became confident and maybe even an expert on two wheels. You could have done it at the first attempt. But what prevented you? It was fear. Yes, fear brings out the worst in you and confidence the best. The same case is with handwriting. Think always that you can write beautifully. My theory is that if one person can write beautifully, why can’t the others?
nWhatever your handwriting is at present, first of all think that you will try your level best to write without cancellations and overwriting. If at all you have to cancel, do so with a single neat line. Next think in your mind that you will not mix up the slants, i.e. you will not write some alphabets straight and others with a slant. Also you have to maintain the same size of all the alphabets. Now when someone types very fast, the alphabets do not become big and small. So also when you write fast all alphabets should be of the same size. Your ‘o’ shouldn’t be of one size and your ‘a’ of another size. Finally, write all the alphabets on the line and give equal spacing between words.
nIn a nutshell, if you put your mind to it, there is no reason why you shouldn’t be able to write beautifully.
THE SEVEN GOLDEN RULES OF BEAUTIFUL HANDWRITING
n
-
Simplicity is the key to good handwriting. Try your level best to write without cancellations and overwriting. If at all you have to cancel, do so with a single neat line which should be of the same shade as the other alphabets. Please do not darken this line and highlight your mistakes.
-
nWrite all the alphabets on the line.
-
nMaintain the same size of all the alphabets and give it a round finish.
-
nDo not mix up the slants. You cannot write some alphabets straight and others with a slant. Either you write all alphabets straight or all alphabets with a slant.
-
nGive ample spacing between words.
-
nGive two finger spacing when you start a paragraph and from the next line onwards stick to the margin.
-
nFinally for English handwriting to look beautiful you have to keep three things in mind. Top, Middle and Lower points. All alphabets with stem like b,d,f,h,k,l,t have to be of the same height and will come in the Top slot. You cannot write your b of one height and your h of a smaller height. If h is of a smaller height it will look like n. Alphabets like a,c,e etc will come in the middle slot and should be of the same size. Alphabets like g,j,p,q,y will come in the lower slot and should be of the same length. You cannot write y of one length and g of another length.
MASTER THIS MASTER SENTENCE
n‘The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.’
nMemorize the 7 Golden Rules and implement the same in the above sentence step by step. You can write in the PRINT, CURSIVE or a mix of both.
nFirst of all be neat and try to write without cancellations and overwriting.
nNext, none of the alphabets should be written above or below the line.
nWhenever an alphabet is written, it should be of the same size as the previous alphabet. It should never be of a bigger or a smaller size and give it a round finish. Don’t ever squeeze your alphabets. Think of your alphabets as juicy fruits and not squeezed fruits.
nDo not mix up the slants. You cannot write your ‘p’ straight and your ‘t’ with a slant. Either you write all your alphabets straight or all your alphabets with a slant.
nWhen you write, two words shouldn’t look like one word. Give ample spacing between words.
nCheck whether you have implemented the Top, Middle & Lower principle for alphabets in the above sentence. Capital T,h,k,b,f,t,h,l,&d should be of the same height. All the middle alphabets should be of the same height and the roots of q,j,p,y & g should be of the same length.
nImplement the above rules in your day to day writing and soon you will see your grades improve. Give off your best and your pen will do the rest.
