I never really thought about it before, but when I flipped on 60 Minutes yesterday and Andy Rooney posed the question "Should anyone with an IQ under 80 be allowed to vote?" my first thought was "No". So, do you think unintelligent/intelligent people should be treated as equals and would you object to having to take an IQ test when registering to vote? If you're wondering what my IQ is, it's around 130 or 135.

My IQ is above 80, and yes, it would offend me to take the test.

As far as requireing people under 80 to vote, how do you find who is under 80, and if you did how many would there be, and would they vote anyway?

This country has been through that test to vote period, and all it did was keep blacks from voting, the way I remember it being told.

I'm not sure that an IQ test should be required, though the logic makes sense to me. There were laws in place d they did effectively stop blacks from voting.  If it were to do the same today I wouldn't mind.  As long as the test was a fair test.

I think personally that when voting however you should have to have a certain level of understanding about the issues.  To often people don't even know what prop 101 is much less have done any research on it.

i disagree w/ this. tests as a prerequisite for a right we already possess make me very anxious, and they should make everyone anxious. here's why:

when blacks first won the right to vote, it was common in the south to implement spelling tests or literacy tests at the time. b/c many of the new voters had been slaves, their literacy was shaky at best, and it effectively made many of them ineligible to vote.

my concern here is that due to the history of testing as a prerequisite for voting, anyone suggesting such a thing seriously would be committing political suicide.

Beyond, Sean and Ed, I tried and tried to respond today in the midst of coughing, sneezing and napping for a minute or two, but the best I can come up with is that I agree with all of you to a degree, but mostly Sean this time. I remember a few years back, beyondtheveil and Ed, when one of the black politicians suggested bringing in a lot more blacks from Africa to balance out the population and then allow them to vote. What a disaster that would have been. But, I do understand what you're saying. God knows we've lost so many rights as it is just being Americans.
