I deny myself popcorn, but I can only stand it for so long.  Its been several weeks since I've succumbed to my craving for it. I think it's a bigger comfort food to me than chocolate these days.

I'm not just a microwave popcorn kind of gal.  I make it on top of the stove.  I have a special red granite pan with a lid that is designated as my popcorn popper.  It rarely is used for anything else.

So last night I gave in.

I put a little canola oil in my red granite pan.  I always put in just one kernel of popcorn at first to hear it pop so that I know the temperature is just right for popping.  I fill the popcorn kernels just to the top of the heated oil.  I shake the pan and repeatedly partially dump the popcorn as it pushes the lid up.  I've become quite skilled at popping popcorn.  I can fill a big bowl with one use of my little red granite pan.

Last night I melted real butter to put on it.  I drizzled half on the top, added a little salt, shook it up and then drizzled the other half repeating the process.

It was absolute heaven.

It was worth waiting for.

I learned to pop popcorn on the stove at a very young age. I can remember standing on a chair to do it. Then when I was older, I worked in a movie theater.  The owners told me that I had popcorn popping down to a science.  Popcorn sales were always their highest when I worked.  The secret was that I always made it fresh.  You never got made ahead popcorn on my watch.  I was a multi-tasker.  I could wait on customers while it was popping.  The sound of the it popping and the smell sold the popcorn. It's taste kept them coming back.

Anyway, I crave popcorn until I can't stand it any longer.  I have to have the good stuff made in my little red granite pan.  I don't eat it as often as I would like because I'm trying to watch carbs and lose weight.  I love it when I do though.

Heaven must smell like popcorn.

That does it, CW. I'm on my way. I love popcorn. B hates it, and hates the way it smells, so I only have it when he's not around. When he isn't home for dinner, I've been known to make a bag of popcorn (yes, in the microwave) and that's dinner, with a cold Coke. I agree--sometimes, it's better than chocolate. Mmmmm.

Come on over, Mimi.  I'll make up a big batch of popcorn.  We'll dish about SC and have a grand time.  :-D

    CW...i hope not....lol.....

Sorry, but if there is something i can't really care is exactly what you love so much and what you were so good at making......

Plus, i can't even stand the smell of it in the movies.....the sight of those huge superzised bags, the munching and  the crunching.....in my country people doesn't eat or drink in the theaters so i still have to learn to get used to smelling hotdogs, tortilla chips and queso..... and the omnipresent popcorn....:-)

My daughter knows it well: no eating o drinking at the movies. Occasionally i might let her have a small soda.

When sometimes she asks for popcorn i just pop one bag in the microwave and its more than good for me.....:-)

    But i am glad you satysfied your long time craving....once in a while is good to give in for your mental health........{hugs}

    Can i still come over????

I never deny myself popcorn. It's just like coffee- feel the need and suddenly it's there.

My parents used to prepare popcorn the way you do. It was good, but I remember having to pick out the burned pieces- they didn't have a magical red pan like you.

    I have succombed to micro-wave.

I too have succumbed to the microwave when it comes to the popcorn.  But I love it made on the stove in a pan.   Here, at my house, I don't have a special popcorn pan, but at my mother's I do.  Ahhh...the memories of making popcorn on the stove.

    Thanks for sharing this.  :-)

Mimi--can you swing by and pick me up on the way, I suddenly have a hankering for some popcorn made that way too.
  • CreativeWoman said on Feb 17, 2007....
    ginger,
    You are welcome anytime.  :-D

    beyond,
I rarely burn it.  I will eat microwave popcorn, but it doesn't really satisfy my craving.  I probably burn more popcorn in the microwave more than I do on the stove.  Now that is a terrible smell.  Burned popcorn smells revolting.  :-)

Damn. You've ruined microwave popcorn for me. Oh well, with real butter and enough salt, I can eat the husks. You're going to have to adjust your technique a bit if you try this aboard the space station....

Speaking of revolting microwave smells. At my old office there was an English dude who had no experience with microwaves. But he was craving a bit of a warmed muffin so he made a guess (instead of asking or reading the guide) that about 4 minutes should do it.

An hour later we were all sent home, unable to exist in the toxic cloud produced by an English muffin after 4 minutes in the microwave at High.

His nickname thereafter was "Smokey Muffin" and he had a theme song to the tune of
    "Davy Crockett":

"Smokey, Smokey Muffin, King of the Microwave..."

My son would love to have popcorn with you someday, he is a big fan. The last time I popped popcorn on the stove was the year before last when we made popcorn balls and a huge mess of popcorn everywhere. I settle for the microwave kind when I get that craving.
  • momsrock said on Feb 17, 2007....
CW, popcorn on the stove is one of my favorite snacks and one of the very few things I can actually make!! :)  We love curling up on the couches with giant bowls of popcorn....especially in the winter.

By the way sweetie..that is a cute title..the Heaven and Popcorn..

    I'm still chucking about that...

It reminds me of my buddy explaining that his kids used to think heaven
was a trash can because they were always finding dead birds, squirrels etc and
bringing them to him..he'd wrap them up and put them in the trash can and
tell the kids..well they went to heaven..It stuck with me...

I make popcorn twice a week for my daughter as an afterschool snack - always stove top - I don't like the microwave popcorn- I do it just for that reason - so that she comes home to the smell of popcorn and she knows its just for her.
  • CreativeWoman said on Feb 17, 2007....
    Professor,
The Orville Redenbacher popcorn kernels don't have a lot of husks.  I would have to be more creative than usual to pop it on the space station.  It might be fun though.  ;-)

I'll bet that english muffin was toxic after 4 minutes in the microwave.   (I actually remember the tune to Davey Crockett.)

Shall I tell you about the time I blew up two boiled eggs in a microwave?  It wasn't pretty.  :-)

    boyz,
Bring him on over with the rest of the gang assembling for popcorn.  :-D  Most of the time I get by without making too big of a mess.

    moms,
My family always did the same.  I always had to make a couple of pans of popcorn before the family sat down to watch a movie when I was a kid.

    JD,
Thanks.  I'm glad you liked the title.  I think it's sweet how your buddy handled all the dead critters with his kids.

    water,
The smell of popcorn will probably always remind her of how you made her feel special.  :-)  I think that's wonderful.

Popcorn is evil!  Evertime I pop a bag, I eat it all!  And if my boyfriend is home I dont even want to share it with him!  It is too damn good!
  • wombat said on Feb 18, 2007....
I only eat popcorn on the nights when I want to lie in bed and read.  I have a glass of ice water handy for when I am finished with the bowl.  But I can't have it as much as I used to.  Was afraid there for awhile that I had a corn stalk growing in my colon.
  • sheissilent said on Feb 18, 2007....

CW, I love your idea of heaven. :)
  • wombat said on Feb 18, 2007....
Eclipsa:  Share your popcorn.  You can always make more.  Just don't eat the microwave kind.   Bland, and cardboard-y   And don't use the stove when not in all your faculties.  Did that. Glad we had a fire extinguisher.  (and that he is a light sleeper!)
  • Eclipsa said on Feb 18, 2007....
Wombat:  I share my popcorn, I said I dont want to share it, I never said I didnt share it!  And I happen to like the microwaveable kind, all though air popping is my favorite.  And sometimes there ISNT more to make!!!!!!! Like at three in the morning and the last bit has been popped, and your high and have the munchies or your drunk and have the munchies!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!!!
  • silverwhisper said on Feb 18, 2007....
i love popcorn, too. the mrs. has an air popper that we break out when we throw a movie in the DVD player, and yes, you absolutely have to use real butter for it. :> we like to add a dash of cayenne, although we recently picked up some smoked paprika (our supermarket just started carrying it)--that might be interesting to add.

mimi: he hates popcorn? i'm sorry but he's officially a doofus, now.

  • polarheart said on Feb 18, 2007....
Good question, Mimi, I successfully burned my popcorn from just now and almost had a whole house full of smoke. . .it did NOT go as planned!!!!

  • danetteb said on Feb 18, 2007....
    Ugh, popcorn smoke is awful.

Someone at our offices burnt their popcorn, but the worst is, it made burn stains on the inside.
Whenever I used the microwave after that, my food had a vague "burnt popcorn" flavor.  *barf*

I quickly learnt to leave the lid on top!
  • CreativeWoman said on Feb 18, 2007....
    ed,
Sometimes a dash of cinnamon is divine on the popcorn or the powdered cheese from a box of mac and cheese. mmmmm

    polar,
    Sorry yours got burned.

    Mimi,
I make mine as I described above.  I wish I could show you.  That would be much easier.

    dannettb,
Burnt microwave popcorn does leave a vile aftermath.  (shiver)

    Lucy,
I'll bet the honey on the popcorn is fabulous.

Has anyone ever had kettlecorn?   It's both sweet and salty.  I treat myself twice a year to that at a local flea market.  They pop it over an open flame.  Divine.

Yep, we have gotten keetle corn at flea markets and craft fairs. That sort of
