My previous blog dealt with the implications of human cloning. To take it one step further, continuing research on sophisticated cloning techniques will inevitably lead to the discovery of the fountain of youth. Cell revitalization by genetic engineering will be able to halt the aging process of our cells and replenish it with freshly cloned revitalized cells. The promise of engineered immortality is possible and may soon be available to anyone who desires it. Since the cell revitalization process may also take a lifetime, costly immortality may be availed of at a very expensive lifetime price, do you want it? Are you still willing to acquire immortality even if it means you can only afford it for yourself? To what extent would you want to live forever and be willing to confront all the consequences of an immortal life?

this would de facto produce the ultimate plutocracy: only the very wealthy would live forever. given the method you suggest, you're talking about eternal life coupled w/ eternal health: the holy grail of science and myth. while i will admit that i'm terrified of death, i do not think i would want to live forever. my life has meaning because of my wife, my friends, my family..that is to say: people and my relationships with them. ed

Selective immortality will only result into discrimination and chaos where those that can afford it, will forever hold on to it and all that the world has to offer. Those who do avail it will be devoid of meaning since the ascent into the spirit world will be aborted or the very least temporarily halted. Those who walk this earth forever will be ruthless, lost in their own eternal time with no purpose or meaning to their life. They shall go through different phases until they tire of their timeless journey and decide that it's time to rest and finally terminate themselves at a pre-determined time. The fountain of youth, eternal life, eternal health is a curse after all. It will only prolong the agony of our earthly life. Why then does man bother to seek for useless endeavors?

The desire to attain perfection is a basic human trait. Man must learn to temper his ego with his natural limits. It's like trying to build a tower little by little trying to reach the heavens and be a little like God. Science is man's limited way of acting like God, cloning and immortality is downright blasphemous!

It would be interesting to read a book that would chronicle the times for an immortal man who walks the earth forever has timeless tales to tell. Tell us what would your book be about?

i agree that would be interesting. ed

Its currently a 60,000 word novel about a right wing terrorist taking a child in texas. Then I added a cover story about a pair of aging serial murderers that runs another 40,000 words. Then I added a voice over narrative that adds another 20,000 words. Now the damn thing is so complicated no one on earth has the prerequisite attention span to read it. Its now in the 35th rewrite.

I think all of the above posters could use education in this field of immortality by looking up the keywords 'kaya kalpa' and noticing how many sites exist for it. This procedure of kaya kalpa has existed for thousands of years and the only reason none of the above people have heard of it is because they are still behind the iron curtain of a great cultural divide between east and west. Eastern religions (and many enlightened souls from the eastern hemisphere of this world know about this.) But the typical westerner has wondered about the possibility of immortality, but in this western culture, such people and thinking has been labeled as insane. I submit this only reflects ignorance and a lack of exploration of what has been going on in other parts of this world. To those who label it as evil are alos ignorant, as the christian bible inndicates that in the end times (the times we are in now) , the meek shall inhererit the world and be guided by god to live forever this way. Most non spiritually oriented individuals do not read any holy scriptures and have only a very cursory regard for god or his scriptures (which also include the vedas, from india). The vedas posit that immortality is real and attainable, making one more god like. Yes, life here will still be temporary, but it can be lived much longer and disease free, aging free. Check out Leonard Orr for the longest lived people on this earth.

I am going through a minor crisis in my life that is next to nothing compared to so many people out there, and yet it is huge to me.

I just wish I could find a way to fix mine, then maybe I would be free to help one or two others fix theirs.<...
