Hi guys,

Sorry I haven't blogged much lately, but I have been out and about interviewing and job searching.  Finally, I got a job, and my fiance and I will be able to buy a house!  I have not been this happy in a long time.  And the job is in my field, too!  So pretty soon, I will be even busier.  But the one thing I'm trying to figure out is about finances.  Do you share all of your purchases with your significant other, or is it okay to buy yourself something nice without consulting your other half?

I'm very honest, and I would never do anything sneaky.  I'm just curious what you guys think.

these are things you work out between you....
i always had my own job, my own income and my own credit cards.  so....i always bought what i wanted for myself; especially before i had kids.

once you understand the monthly bills - and especially with buying a house and the taxes and utilities etc., then you'll know what's left over each month, and you'll know what you can spend.

talk about it with him.  because i'm sure he will have things he will want to buy for himself as well.

i don't tell my husband every time i buy a new shirt or shoes or something.  i don't think it's sneaky.....it's just we're both adults, we both make purchases, and we don't usually share the smaller ones with each other anymore.

congratulations on your job!  i'm happy for you!!!!

    Congratulations on the new job!

I'm just like Secret, always had my own credit cards and income so I did what I wanted.  That was until we were married and then came baby and house!

I still have my own credit cards and we don't hold any revolving accounts together at all.  Never have and never will.  The mortgage is in both of our names and one of the checking accounts, maybe two.  I never look at his, he only deposits into mine ;-)

I sort-of get an allowance, or just ask for money if I need it.  I don't work anymore.

    starlight, that's fantastic news, congratulations!

re: finances, my wife handles ours. i don't really need to know as she's got a handle on it, i figure. i'm not a very impulse-buy shopper, as a rule. she shocked the heck out of me when she told me that she did our tax refunds already before the end of january. :>

    Congratulations on the job.

Here's something that some friends of mine do and it seems to work for them.

They both have retained their individual bank accounts and credit cards but have set up a joint account into which they both pay equally each month and from that the bills are paid. They also have a joint credit card for purchasing items that they can't easily buy from their individual accounts. Then they each contribute half the monthly bill into the joint account to cover that bill.

But as has been said you should work this out together.

Thanks for the advice guys.  We sort of have our own system worked out at this point.  I buy my own business wardrobe and pay the bills off using my money.  I'm lucky that I will be able to pay one big credit card off in one paycheck.  He's pretty much given me the go ahead to buy myself new clothes since I'm paying for them with my own money.  We will open a joint account for the bills after we get married.

Oh, I have some good news.  After the wedding, we're buying a house!!  = D
