Every now and then a writer decides to have a character make a Credo speech. Kevin Costner's soliloquy in Bull Durham comes to mind - profane, lyrical and heartfelt.
So I was watching Grey's Anatomy, and while all of the interns are under the stress of seeing Meredith near death, Izzie says "she'll make it" and George tells her "You don't know that," which is the cue for Izzie to launch into her Credo speech.
It's ragged, uneven, and unconvincing. We as viewers know the Meredith isn't going to die, that she'll have a near-death vision and will miraculously pull through, which makes this whole scene even more annoying. (I love the show but frequently find it annoying. I thought letting George find the missing boy was
a copout.)
But there's one clumsily phrased line that rings true:
"I believe that believing we survive, is what makes us survive."
I think she's got something there.
