...a Nina Simone Day in my house.
Her smoldering smoky alto wafts through my house seeping into my bones, caressing my soul. And in the next heartbeat her vocal stylings shift and become a testament to her range as she moves to crystal clear contralto.
Her voice is seductive and entrancing. Something about her music wends it's way through the layers of mundane and the everyday and settles within me; it leaves me shivering as it touches some place that I cannot articulate clearly.
I'm particularly fond of listening to her sing Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out, Gin House Blues, Wild is the Wind, Mississippi Goddam (a song that got her and her records banned in the state in the early '60s when it was produced for Philips Records), Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood, Don't Smoke in Bed, and I Put a Spell on You.
But, I think, my favorite of her tunes is the highly suggestive Sugar in My Bowl.
Sugar in My Bowl
I want a little sugar
in my bowl
I want a little sweetness
down in my soul
I could stand some lovin'
Oh so bad
Feel so lonely and I feel so sad
I want a little steam
on my clothes
Maybe I could fix things up
so they'll go
Whatsa matter Daddy
Come on, save my soul
Drop a little sugar in my bowl
I ain't foolin'
Drop a little sugar in my bowl
Well I want a little sugar
in my bowl
Well I want a little sweetness
down in my soul
You been acting strangely
I've been told
Move me Daddy
I want some sugar in my bowl
I want a little steam
on my clothes
Maybe I can fix things up so they'll go
Whatsa matter Daddy
Come on save my soul
Drop a little sugar in my bowl
I ain't foolin'
Drop some sugar- yeah- in my bowl.
