Yup, another installment of the "on" series. Well, actually, this could be a second part to my fourth installment, but I'd like to think it's a little more than the previous one. That was being mistaken for being sweet and innocent and only those two things, and I am indeed those things.

This entry, however, has more to do with being mistaken for things, actually races, that I am not.

All my life, I have been mistaken for a good number of many races/ethnicities.. I've been mistaken for being Native American, Indian (from India), Hispanic/Latina/Mexican/Spanish. Never, and I mean never, I have I been told I was the races that I am. I even had an Indian guy at a gas station/convenience store tell me, after I told him what I was, that I was Indian and that I was lying. Uh, excuse me? I know what I am, dumbass. I have my mom and dad to prove it.

Now don't get me wrong, it's flattering and I'm not complaining...well except for that idiot who kept insisting I was Indian. But at least once in my life, I would love, and I mean really love, anyone who could guess my two races/ethnicities. But that doesn't look like that's going to happen, ever.

Why, you may ask? Because I look nothing like the two races/ethnicities that I made up of. I look nothing like my mom, which, when I was a little girl, made me think that I was adopted or something. But I look like my dad, something my mom likes to point out to me almost everyday. And yet, nobody ever guesses that I am my dad's race, even though I look like him. Most likely because of my light skin, formulated from the mixing of my mom's and dad's genes.

What's funnier than this is that when I was just born, I was already mistaken for being another race by a friend of my mom's husband. He completely thought that I wasn't my dad's child because of how white my skin was. He just didn't realize that it takes some time before pigment comes in for babies like me.

Now I bet you're wondering what exactly I am, huh? Well, I could tell you, but I thought it would be more fun for people to guess. So have at it, if you'd like. And let's see if anyone guesses right or at least guesses half of what I am made up of.

http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o263/pinkyswear9/Meoncouch2.jpg

And yes, at some point, I will tell you what exactly I am made up of.

But for the time being, guess away and maybe figure out why I get mistaken for this and that, race/ethnicity wise. I know why, but would like to hear what others think.

And one more thing, have you ever been mistaken for being an entirely different race/ethnicitiy than the one that you are?

I know you are definitely not Indian...lol other than that, I really don't know. I have never been mistaken for another race but my son has. It doesn't happen as much now as it did when he was younger though. I am white and his father is black, but up until he was two years old, people thought he was hispanic or asian.

Petite...i am guessing you are half Philippina and half Hawaian, or Australian or from some Caribbean place...??...

Me? no, i am just plain white...lol....

But i have people constantly misplacing me geographically because of my accent.....yes, they guess immediately i am European but mostly they think i am from France (one guy actually told me i was from East Europe) instead of Italy.......

So i know the kind of frustration you are talking about...even though its not that annoying like i guess yours...

    btw...you are really pretty...:-)

I'm as white as white can be, but once I was detained for armed robbery and interogated for 12 hours, the suspect was reported as  black male about 5 6, I'm 6' 3", but a witness Id'd me while I was shopping one day and off I went.

Later the witness daid it wasn't me, but I looked just like him since I had a had like his.

Vic.........seriously? There are sometimes on the news stories about these amazing freaking mistakes but you are the first one i can talk to who happened to get trapped .....only this would make a great blog.....how did they treat you during the interrogation?

I would agree with gingersoul on the phillipina part, I don't have a guess for the other part.

I was once asked by a drunk guy if I was really a guy. No one believes my son is half hispanic because he is as white as me.

momsrock~ Lucky for you and your son. To this very day, I still get mistaken for this and that! : )

gingersoul~ Hehe, you're right about being half filipina. My mom's filipina.

And ah, the misplacement of the self due to accent. A friend of a friend has that same exact problem.

VICARIOUS~ Are you serious? That's just crazy. And I agree with ginger, this might make for a good blog. It is a must tell! : )

boyzmom~ That's even worse than that convenience story guy insisting that I was Indian! I swear, some people are far beyond strange.

And one of my friends is just like your son. He's half hispanic and so is his brother, but they don't like it. They resemble their mom, but could pass for an entirely different race if you didn't know any better.

  • momsrock said on Feb 15, 2007....
It can be a little frustrating at times. He changed races on almost every other page of his medical races for the first year...why didn't they just ask?? Does stuff like that happen to you as well?

You are beautiful... Is Ginger close with the arabian country?
  • gingersoul said on Feb 15, 2007....

Moms...doesn't matter what race or what color......your kid is so cute!!..:-)

    Petite........am i close? am i close? Petite, am i close?...LOL...

gingersoul~ Nice guess, but nope. But it's not the first time I've had people thought I was Arabian. Btw, thank you for the compliment. : )

mom and yani~ Huge gold stars and big huge huggies go to both of you for guessing right!  I am indeed black and filipino. : D

silver~ Jamaican? Now, I have never been mistaken for being Jamaican. Haha, I can add that one to the list now. : )

  • petitepapillon said on Feb 19, 2007....

mom~ Yup, I used to be a metal mouth back in the 8th and 9th grade. Got made fun of, too. But I laugh at them now because I have straight teeth and they don't Muhahaha! Oops, sorry about that. Lol. : )

yani~ Aww, thanks yani. That actually means a lot to me, especially since when I was a little girl, I could never fit in either group. It was hard.

Btw, I knew you were filipino. I think you commented on someone else's post, you left a comment in tagalog. And yes, I can read and understand it, thanks to my mom who spoke both english and tagalog to me since I was a baby. : )

Minsan kasi nauubusan ang ingles ko at nangangailangan kong managalog :)
