I got to thinking. Why is it that posts with really creative titles get more clicks than more mundane ones. If this hadn't gotten your attention, you wouldn't be looking at this post, right? That said, why is it that we look for a catchy title, and pass over the less appealing ones when they could be just as interesting and thought-provoking.
Okay. Nuff said. As you may notice, there isn't that much to this post, so why is it that you clicked? This isn't a criticism, just an experiment.

People "Click" for many reasons, including: their age, their race, their sex, their gender, income, family background, educational background, the mood they're in at the time, the time of day it is, etc...These are just a handful of reasons that people have different interests in different titles. It's not just about having a "catchy title". -

I'd call it the "Paul Zindel" technique. He always comes up with really weird names for his books, which I guess is so that more people will buy them. -

have you ever taken a course in journalism writing? even if you haven't, it's basically the same thing as drafting a headline for a news story. hell, it certainly caught my attention. and when you come right down to it, it's basically marketing. at least, IMHO. ed -

I think catchy titles spark the imagination for me. I wonder what the rest of the story will be about. I agree that writing good headlines is good for marketing your work. -

We are so assaulted by things screaming for our attention, that just to survive we have to tune most of it out. In a primitive way, we survive by quickly judging what is mundane and safe, and what is potentially dangerous and threatening. When we scan things, we will immediately stop at anything that is unusual. So we will ignore a post if the title is "What I had for lunch" and click on 'Green bugs invade brothel." We are also suggestible, so if you post 'click here' our subconcious will see that as an order, and then our concious mind has to decide if we will obey or disobey. Ironically, we'd respond just the same if someone typed "Don't click here!" That's because our mind will ignore the 'don't' part and focus on the order part telling it what to do. Think I'm wrong? You clicked here didn't you? Ever yell at a bunch of skaters "Don't fall". It's like the domino effect. -
