Thanks to silverwhisper and truthsayer for opening my eyes to this, your debate has inspired me to search further into the realms of "socialy acceptable religions" and why some are just not accepted.

I have a few friends, well not realy friends rather some people I know, who call themselves Pagans.  I do not like them, I'm honest.
I'm a Pagan too, an eclectic Wiccan to be more precise so now some might ask, why don't I like people who are of the same religion as me? Because, while Paganism is my religion and lifestyle, they've made a party trick of it! They believe it's right, I believe it's wrong therefor the one debate I never thought existed: What does the saying "Harm none, do what ye will" realy mean?

Let me introduce you the four friends: (Psuedioms used)

Wally Warlock:  Age 25, apparently been pracitising witchcraft since the age of 6 and praises himself to be all-knowing and everybody around him is all-wrong. He goes around "blessing" everything, grew up a Catholic, and thinks Satan is a cool guy.

Mike Magician:  Age 22, moved from a small town to a big city a few years back where he apparently was introduced to witchcraft and initiated into a coven. With in a year he became a high priest and now he does mind reading tricks as a party favour and believes he can solve any problem. He also tries to force our religion down everybody's throats.

Dina Diabolic: Age 21, started witchcraft round about the same time as me. Was on the blessed path untill she discovered love magick and ever since she couldn't stop herself in doing a spell to get her way, especially with guys.

Wilhemina Witch: Age 21, started witchcraft by accident at a house party in her late teens. Ever since she's been cursing everybody and everything that even looks weird at her.

And then somewhere along the line, there's me: Mousenphonic. Been praticing Wicca since the age of fourteen, still don't know everything, don't do party tricks, have never casted a love spell before, as a matter of fact, never even casted anything before.....

This is when I realised it: It's people like them that give my religion the reputation it has.

After my "What is a socialy acceptable religion post?" I set out to do some soul evaluation of my own, off line.

I asked the all-knowing Wally:  If your a Pagan, and Pagan's don't believe in the devil, why do you still praise Satan like you do?  He answered me with a bellowing laugh.

I asked high priest Mike: If you have your own coven of 13 to attend to, and you know that our kind keep to themselves, why do you force our religion upon others who will only make a mockery of it?  He answered with a giggled "'cause they don't know what they're missing"

I asked the seductive Dina: You are such a beautiful woman, why do you need magick to get the attention of men if you don't realy need it? She gave me a look and just said: "Shaut up, your just jealous 'cause you can't get it right"

I asked the cursing Wilhemina: If our rede states that we are to harm none, why do you go around and screw up peoples lives and in the process make yourself more misrable? She stared into my eyes with silence and as she did I felt my insides fighting to ward of her curse.

It struck me like lightning, all these people called themselves Pagan's but they had no idea what being Pagan was all about.  All this time I fought with myself thinking that my religion was infact maybe a wrong decision, but it wasn't. All this time, I've been believing like I should, not misusing the powers given to us by the elements and the Mother, honouring my Goddess through ritual and thought and walking the blessed path as it should.  I've never harm any and it has come three fold back to me.  And through it all I've been doing what I want, the right way, although from inside the safety of the broomcloset.

Blessed Be!

I know someone very, and I mean very, close to me that is Wiccan.  He feels exactly the same way you do.
Did you know that Wicca is the fastest growing religion among teenage girls?  It's a joke because half of them don't even know what it really is.  They think it's just magic and "magic is cool", right?  Wrong.
I think you're right on here.  I'm not Wiccan myself but having read a lot about it for the purpose of trying to understand this "close person", I can actually relate to your distaste in the "imposters" if that's what they're called.  This post made me smile because the same things annoy me and I'm not even Pagan.

Mouse: one question before i comment longer.

I am curious to know if any of these witchcraftng practises really work? Do you know anybody who really fell under the spell of a love potion of got cursed for good?

  • dragontears said on Feb 12, 2007....
Many people call themselves pagans because they think its cool.I see teenagers all the time who claim to study the ancient ways, but when I start to question them about .....oh  lets say Crowely's teachings or the history of what they claim to be be the answer is usually...I dunno. They always want to practice ritual/spellwork way before they are ready or like you said go around claiming to know it all when they really haven't even scratched the surface yet. And yes that gives pagans a bad rap all the way around.

My background is celtic/norse and druidic teachings...so I try to offer advice so the don't get themselves rapped up in something they can't control. So I know where your coming from .....as you say ..i've lived out of the broomcloset for some time now and it has its share of difficulties as "stereotyped for your beliefs" tells.

So my advice to them would be to prepare there mind and body with exercises like "chasing the flame" and meditation before embarking on anything else.cause even a parlor trick such as mind reading can be an invitation for trouble without the proper conditioning and protection....take it from me I know I had to learn the hard way. I consider myself lucky I actually had a full fledged druid priest teach me the rights and wrongs...but thats a story for a later date...

    blessed be..

mouse- I know what the word means, but I'm not sure what you mean by "eclectic" Wiccan. If you are a true Wiccan, don't you need to seek out true Wiccans?

When you mentioned safety of the broomcloset, do you mean it would be dangerous to do so?
  • mousenphonic said on Feb 13, 2007....
BrenneeLee:  I have great respect for you as a person, realy I do. While your not even Pagan, you have taken a step to getting to know our religion without gettng involved for the sake of somebody close to you.  I hope he has shown you the same respect as you've shown him.

ginger: See, that's the whole thing, people hear spells and magick and immediatly they think of Hollywood special effects. I have seen a love spell work once though to the point where when the witch got tired of him and rejected him, he killed himself, this realy did happen. It's not  my place to say if spells and curses work as I've never had the need to do spell work myself before. I guess it's true when people say that curses only work if you believe in them.

dragontears: It's true, unbelievable but true. I'm a born African, so alot of my ways originate from this continent.  I learned myself witchcraft and I'm still learning. Infact for a true Wiccan the path to knowledge never end.  I am still partialy in the broomcloset because I don't want to be associated with the above friends who are out.  My mother, my husband and two of my closests friends know my religious status and for me, thats enough.

beyond: Thanks for asking that question, here goes: True Wiccans prefer to practice with a coven that consists off approx. 13 people, and follow mostly the Gardnerian teachings. Eclictic Wiccans, who follow the Alexandrian teachings, mostly practice in solitude and draw inspiration from more modern things. Myself I like to draw inspiration from different cultures and teachings, too. As for the broom closet question....being openly Wiccan has it's pro's but unfortunatly it's con's too. They're constantly judged and preached for and that raises unnecersary debate.  As I have said on a previous occasion: My religion does not expect of me to defend it.

    Blessed Be!

Mouse: you've asked how my forrays into this are going. Well here goes. I started looking into spiritualism after having studied and rejecting most of the major religions in the world. Nothing felt quite right but I have always felt there was something more. I wouldn't describe myself as Wiccan or Pagan either. But it feels closer so I do read up about it and learn. I have been to spiritual church and recieved messages from the mediums there (highly accurate and specific messages), I have always had healing hands and have been learning how to meditate and channel that energy, I have even had a message through me to someone else, I have looked up many many spells and bought books but I have yet to cast a single one because I want to understand everything properly before I attempt anything. So currently I'm reading everything I can get my hands on from Crowley to Dee. After I feel I know enough I may cast a spell or I may not but it won't be on a whim or without reason. And certainly not as a parlour trick. But one thing I do know is if I do ever consider actually casting a spell the very first will be one of protection.

mouse- Thanks for the answer. One more question if you don't mind.

My readings about Wicca were long ago, but I seem to remember it being concerned about "things of the Earth" along with being spiritual. Is Wicca considered by you to be a nature religion?
  • kruuyai said on Feb 13, 2007....
Mouse... don't be too discouraged.  All religions attract people who want to turn it into something negative.  Look at all the horrors that have been committed in the name of Christianity and Islam, just to name a couple.  It does shape other people's perceptions, but it shouldn't change your value system.

interesting post mouse!! and perfect timing!!! i'm doing a paper on wiccans and i hope you could help me. do you know any websites that could show the real meaning of this religion??? i know there is so many wannabe's out there and i dont want the worng information. this paper is for our sociology subject and we are studying about other religions and cults. hope you could help me...

diccon: It's always nice to read about your views on this topic and even nicer to engage with you in discussion about this.  It great that you don't commit yourself to religion because you "should" but rather you keep on searching untill you find something you feel comfortable with.  As for spell work: A protection spell is  a good place to start, I think. Good luck.

beyond: Nature plays a very important role in my beliefs.  Especially the seasons, the elements and the moon.

kruu: I was discouraged about this untill recently, now I know  that it's what I believe in my heart that matters.  Wicca is just a misunderstood religion, I'll leave the critics to fight that battle, from now on I'll keep to myself.

queen: I'm thrilled to hear about your project! And yes, I'll be more than willing to help you with this. Just remember, only about 10 percent of the stuff written about Wicca on the net is true and it is very hard to recognize the facts from the fairy tales. I'll give you more in sight and links to some helpfull websites a bit later. For now, you could log onto About.com. They have a free news letter called "Wicca in a week" under the "spirituality and religion"  interest.  It realy has some interesting facts that should get you started.

    Blessed Be!

  • queenparanoia said on Feb 14, 2007....

thanks mouse!!! this is really helpful!! anyway our project is about a religion or cult found or has a following here. well i have friend who is a wiccan and i interviewed him about this religion. you are right it is a misunderstand religion it is more than just magic. and i want to prove to my uptight teacher that wicca is not evil. i'm not a wicca i'm a catholic actually. but as i read some information about your religion i found out that it is more to it than it seems. and i agree that religion is your own choice and your own personal spirituality that you are comfortable in. i just want you to know that i respect your religion. we may not be the same in views and opinions but respect is something that i truly believe.

    thank you once again!!!

kruu: That's a good one! Lol.  But did you know it's a common mistake made by internet user's to think that Wikipedia is actualy an encyclopedia for witches? Don't now how they get to that one......*giggles*

queen:  It's been a pleasure to be of service.  Thanks for your respect and you can expect the same respect from my side too.

I'm still young and been trying to learn witchcraft since a very very young age. I've learned the basics and am still learning. I believe what you said. Shows like 'Charmed' and 'Hocus Pocus' (though I do like it) have warped the minds of young generations. When someone asks what is a witch, I try to explain the truth but they get bored and walk away. I've never cursed anyone, used love spells to make some one love me (my boyfriend fell in love with me naturally), nor do I force others to become witches. I can't say I'm a true witch or that I follow a specific path. I'm still learning like I said. But I do believe in dragons above most things (besides the All, the Lady, and the Lord). Maybe if you want read some of my blogs, I will add more later.
