Do any of you get them?  What triggers them for you?

Counting today, I've had five in my lifetime.  The first three were attributed to food.  I have a reaction to MSG and to aspartame (Nutrasweet).  Both give me horrible horrible migranes.  But yesterday and this morning, I woke up and about an hour later started experiencing the "aura".  I immediately took some tylenol and found some caffine to help with the pain.  I can't think of what triggered these last two.  I hadn't eaten anything yet, so I know it wasn't MSG or aspartame.  So I did a little googling and came up with a large handful of possible triggers that apply to my conditions for the last two days.   Both times I:
  • Skipped at least one meal
  • Didn't have the usual cup of coffee (caffine withdrawl)
  • May have been exposed to MSG (I have to check a couple labels when I get home
  • Had a high stress level (my husband and I "catered" a four-course gourmet dinner on Saturday then woke up late and rushed to church on Sunday)
  • Histamines: my allergies went nuts this weekend and I took a benadryl to clear me up and help me sleep
  • Had lack of sleep because the baby still isn't quite sleeping all night
  • Under PMS

bombshell, I used to get them when I was under a lot of stress. I also used to get them when I tried to stop drinking soda.

I had a series of them when I was under stress, but coupled with not eating right.  Like the time I ate too much peanut butter, if you know what I mean.  I went through something strange--a period of "coming into the knowing of my abusive childhood."  Started with depression, went to unable to function (clean the house, etc...) then explosive anger.  After that, a shit load of craziness.  "Acting out." flashbacks, bizzare psychological experiences--you name it.  The migraines were so bad at times I would bang my head against the wall and beg my ex to kill me.

Divorcing me finally surficed. Eventually, after five more years of Hell, I met someone who understood me and helped me.  Five years with him, and, knock on wood, the migraines have stopped.

I made an appointment w/ my general practicioner for tomorrow.  I'm so far so good today, but it just freaks me out if I can't explain what's going on with my body.  The other times I've had migranes, they were explainable.  Although I can't be sure, I think yesterday's episode was due to the combination of stress, not eating, and PMS (blood-iron-estrogen levels).

The thing that I'm most worried about is that my secondary occupation relies on a medical certificate where a history of unexplained migranes is one reason to be denied.

Bombshell... I am suffering from one of those dreaded migraines now. It's not so bad right now,but it's a nagging one. Last night I couldn't even sit up without becoming sick to my stomach. It didn't hurt so bad when I was laying down. I don't even know what triggered it. The night before I had some salmon for dinner. I actually woke up the next day feeling sick to my stomach. Almost as if I ate something bad or had the flu. But no flu. Everything else went away except the headache. I went into the natural health store and the woman suggested Feverfew. It's an herbal supplement. I know caffeine is good to get rid of headaches. That and coffee. Both open up the capillaries. Just like cigarrettes close them!!!!! Maybe that's why people have a cigarrette AND a cup of coffee??! lol. I don't know. But migraines are the pits. What did the doctor say??!

She said that it was probably a menstrual migraine (that's probably TMI for the guys) and that it's real common for it to happen right before or during the first three days of your cycle.  (It was the day before mine.)  The hormone build-up before your period often triggers something that causes migraines. She said that she wasn't real concerned, but if they start occurring more frequently, then I need to see her again.  I said, "But I've never had it before." and she basically said, SO?  Apparently you can just start having them out of the blue.

One odd thing: she did a general neurological test, tapped my knees with the hammer and looked in my eyes.  When she looked in my eyes, her brow furrowed and she turned out the lights and looked again.  The furrow didn't go away, but she didn't say anything about whatever she was thinking.

I may need to get my eyes examined.  The last time I went, I was pregnant and you know your eyes change because of fluid retention.  Maybe my eyes are back to normal and need new glasses/contacts.

I think that if it was a menstrual migraine, there has to be something in combination that triggers it for me because I haven't had a problem since then. We'll see next week if it happens again.
