My two younger sisters are married to brothers.

My middle sister is the one who lost her husband in the motorcycle accident when she was 26.

Nine years later my little sister met a guy who was ten years her junior at a country line dancing event at a local club.  She was 28, and he was 18.......not even old enough to have a beer at the bar.  He was drinking coke.

It took her 6 months to tell the family about him.

We were all horrified and accused her of robbing the cradle among other things.....

We thought for sure that the death of our brother-in-law had screwed all of us up beyond repair.  I mean here she was dating ...practically a child.

He was from Louisianna.  His family, mom, dad, 2 brothers and a sister, were still there.
His parents, it turns out, were only 10 years older than me!

Anyway, they decided to get married.

They plan a big to-do wedding and 2 days before it happens, his family comes out to meet our family.

My mother hosts a dinner party the first night at her house.

The 2nd night was the rehearsal dinner at some restaurant....

My middle sister was maid of honor for younger sis...
Her fiance's older (single) brother was best man.

My sister had only dated two guys since losing her husband.  She was very picky and nobody thought she'd ever find another guy she could get along with.  The death of her first husband made her quite bitter....

Yet at the rehearsal dinner middle sis and older brother were spotted having several conversations.....

At the wedding reception, middle sis and older brother were seen dancing - and then dancing again....and again.

Middle sister was spotted giggling and flirting.

Right after my little sister cut the cake and threw the bouquet, middle sis and older brother disappeared.

Nobody knew where they were for 2 days.

When they re-appeared, middle sister announces that she is going to Louisianna to spend a few weeks with him to see if they are 'compatible'.

When she came back, he came too.  He stayed 3 weeks, and went home, quit his job, and then moved in with her here in NJ.

Six months after meeting, they married.

This week my two sisters are flying to Louisianna with the two brothers who they married .
They're taking the kids to visit "maw maw" and "paw paw"...

It makes me chuckle that they have the same in-laws!

It made me laugh that they had the same inlaws too because I thought stuff like that only happened in our family!! My sister and my step sister married brothers!! The parents of the brothers used to feel bad for my son because all of his cousins had the same grandparents and he was always left out when they had holiday parties so they would invite him anyway. It was very thoughtful of them.

SL, this also happened in my mother's mother's family.

Sounds like it's common. I have a family tree and the person who did the research said he was confused for a bit until he realized that Susie 'Smith' married Mr. Smith, and on his death married Mr. Smith's younger brother and once again was a 'Smith'.

Cute story SL, I was going to add something funny, but doubted you would
    find it so........haha.

I've told you a number of times about my Dad and his three sisters, so I
    won't add that again here.

Hell, I've told you just about everything, so I have little to add in terms of
    comparisons.

Eighteen and twenty eight, he must have had his head screwed on straight
to be compatible with your Sister at that time. thanks SL

That is really neat, secret,  are they both fairly happy?  That's pretty cool.

That hasn't ever happened in my family, but I have friends where it has. Does it help to know it worked out great for them?

Love does not have age boundaries.  Your sister nabbed an 18 year old guy, she has it going on!  Woohoo if I could nail and 18 year old I would too.  That is funny about them marrying in the way they did, almost like a twisted family tree

Secret.....i could have almost tell the same story.......

When my brother-in-law went to visit us in Italy right before i got pregnant i naturally introduced him to my family.

My mom naturally cooked a great dinner in his honor and in that occasion my sister and my BIL met. She wasn't speaking a word in English and he wasn't speaking a word in Italian. Me and my husband had to do the first translations for them.  Well, they hooked up immediately to the point that they ended up in bed the day after and they have been inseparable for the rest of his vacation.

When he went back in Usa their story didn't bloom with the distance though. Otherwise i could have tell a story similar to yours...lol....

Another detail: my ex was barely 20 when i met him, i was 29. My father accepted him only because he was in the Navy...i guess he thought an uniform was meaning enough ....my mother sighed, my siblings and my friends gave us not more than 3 months...well we lasted 18 years.....

    i am glad your sisters marriages are lasting longer than mine...{hugs}

Hold on a minute, what is so bad about 18 yrs & 28 yrs???
    I'm 33 my hb is 45, we met when I was 22 and he was 34 yrs - thats more than 10 yrs difference so whats so bad about a gap like that??? (I smell some old fashioned views here somewhere) {smirk, giggle}
  • gingersoul said on Feb 12, 2007....

Tobi...oh you know better......there is always a double standard......if the woman is older than the guy is something that makes people smirking and questioning and making jokes and doubting ...

if the guy is older than the girl is a whole different story...believe me...

i dont see anything wrong in you and your hubby gap,..as well as i dont see anything (evidently) in my situation or Secret's sister...

but there is a different way in which people judge the age gap.....

  • Lioness said on Feb 12, 2007....
Hmm... no matter what the age gap, it still is a nice story to me..

Cool post SL, makes me feel like a teenager again. =)
  • Dicconzane said on Feb 12, 2007....
I know from personal experience that age is less important than compatability. But it's nice in a way that your siblings married brothers. It makes it easier to stay close.
  • mommyof2 said on Feb 12, 2007....
Age? There's a 16 year age gap between my other half and I.......
My sisters oldest child and my nephews girl have the same father...
  • secretlife said on Feb 12, 2007....
moms:  it was nice of them to invite your son!  see, your family isn't so odd after all?  lol or else there are more oddballs than you thought!

LJ&sweet:  funny how this marrying brothers and sisters is more common than we might think!

mobil: and you know i want to know everything!
yeah, i think because he grew up in the south, he was mature beyond his years.  he moved to NJ with a job he took right out of high school, and he had been living on his own for that year....but he'd been working to help his family since he was 14.  I suppose it was hard for all of us to imagine an 18 yr old who was ready for marriage-  they didn't actually tie the knot til he was 20!

satry:  my little sister has 2 kids.  a girl who is going to be 9 this month, and a boy who is 6.  They've been married 12 yrs.

my middle sister also has 2 kids....little boys 5 and 3.  They've been married 11 yrs.

they both seem to be doing fine.

we make fun of my middle sister all the time because she still talks about having another baby, and she is 43!

beyond:  you can never guess what's going to happen to people, you know?  back then, we gave the marriage 5 years tops.  we were wrong.
back then we thought my middle sister wouldn't marry again....never have kids of her own....we were wrong there too!  it's really good to see how life works itself out even when we doubt it will.

mm: chuckle chuckle....kinda like this trip they're taking to louisianna this week....they're on the same flight together!

mom:  at first i thought.....what will these two have to talk about?  how can they possibly have anything in common?  but then i looked at my own marriage and realized age has little to do with talking or things in common anyway....there are no guarantees in life.

ginger:  i knew you had this age gap with your husband!  i didn't realize your sister and his brother had a romance.  if you knew my sister you'd never guess that  after knowing this guy for just a couple of days she'd pack her bags and go spend two weeks with him....it just wasn't her character to go trapsing around....traveling wasn't her thing at all.  and then when he came back here and moved in, we knew something special was going on.

your marriage lasted 18 yrs.....my sisters marriages haven't gone for that long.  i would say ginger, that you never know what the future holds....that all you can do is be happy in the present, and hope for the best.

you are so right about the double standard in age gaps with men and women.  it's much more acceptable if the man is older...

saying that, my dad was 5 yrs younger than my mother.

lucy:  yeah i will admit i have some old fashioned views so go ahead and giggle....i do too!  but look at the to-do with demi moore and ashton kutcher....it has always been more acceptable for men to go after younger women.  women not so much...

I can relate to what you are describing. Some years ago I worked with a guy,who was a twin. He, and his twin brother, ended up marrying twin sisters. When they were all apart I could tell who was who.But when they were together I didnt know who was who.Neither marriage lasted more than 10yrs.I think they were all too much alike.I had to laugh because I know during the 10yrs I knew them, they all pulled the old "bait & switch"on each other several times, and no one was the wiser. Does'nt say much for knowing your mate, does it?

secret, you think thats bad. One of my x's got a set of sisters pregnant at the same time. His nephew was also his son, and not only were these 2 little boys brothers, but cousins. What a confusing situation. What a sleeze bag. What did I EVER see in him.

fish:  i firmly believe that they knew they were pulling the switcheroo...and went along with it.  i know people might look alike, but cannot believe they also act the same

daily: keep your sister AWAY from your BIL

gran:  sounds like a big mess to me!

    mobil:  lol fish....and chips?

    ok smarty pants !
  • Lucytorial said on Feb 12, 2007....
I do giggle because there are a lot of women who just don't do the younger guy thing... however demi is a good example.
    I don't think I'd like to teach an 18 yr old the tricks so to speak but it would be fun corrupting a young lad I suppose. Yes the double standard exists but secret it's okay really I still like you.... {giggle, grin}
As long as love endures then age has no bearing in the lives of to people and this seems to be the case and it is a lovely story.

Well I have'nt exactly been truthful to you and it's been bothering me...

We finally told our families! Much rejoicing.......
This is one Thanksgiving memory I won't forget. Even if I seem to forget everything else....
or is this cruel intentions spelled another way?...
