I was just reading online about healthy food choices and weight loss.  I guess I already knew this from my year at Weight Watchers, that it's not good to skip breakfast.  Uh-oh, I guess I flunk Breakfast 101.

I am rarely hungry in the morning.  I don't eat breakfast.  I usually don't eat anything until around 2 in the afternoon.  Yesterday the first time I ate was at dinner around 6:30.

I can't be the only one who doesn't eat breakfast.  Am I?  Does anybody else skip breakfast?  And if you eat breakfast, what do you usually have?  Maybe I can get some inspiration.

I have a hard time eating breakfast. I'm not hungry and if I try to force it, I just feel sick the rest of the day. My husband is the same way...but our kids have always loved breakfast. On Sundays we usually give them a small breakfast and then have a larger breakfast closer to 11 am...with pancakes, eggs, sausage, bacon.

I eat breakfast only because when i didn't eat breakfast i'd be more likely to 'pick' in between....

i like oatmeal, any kind of fruit, vanilla yogurt mixed with granola, or cream of wheat most mornings.....quick and easy and keeps me filled.
I also eat cheerios, corn flakes, and rice krispies!

i will skip lunch more often than breakfast, but do try to eat something before 2 so that I can make it thru the afternoon without junk!

Mimi you can gain weigh by not eating enough. Did you know that? It's the body thinking it's starving syndrome.

You're right...everything you read will tell you eating breakfast is important...expecially after you've been starving all night long.

I always eat breakfast. It's not always healthy...often it's a muffin at work with some diet coke. When I'm good it's cereal (cheerios, shredded wheat or sometimes oatmeal) or whole wheat toast with peanut butter. (I'm still having a hard time realizing peanut butter is better for me than jam.) Or grapefruit or yogurt.  I'd love to have some juice...but it's a very rare treat for me.

Weight Watchers is actually a very good program.

As for not eating until 2 (depending on when you got up) but especially 6:30 is just a no no. Do I need to get LJ after you?

Mimi, you know you're getting old when you pile the bran buds on top of your shredded wheat. I usually have either shredded wheat or oatmeal. Bran of some sort is a topping for both, as well as some granola. Occasionally I'll treat myself to some brown sugar and butter in my oatmeal but that's a once-a-week kind of treat.

But then I was raised by a disciple of Ewell Gibbons so eating fruits and berries and nuts comes naturally to me.

See that's the problem with oatmeal for me. I really like it but with brown sugar and milk...ah...I've got brown sugar substitute. Problem solved. :D
  • lioneljay said on Feb 11, 2007....
Don't forget the banana on the oatmeal, ss. Bananas are very, very good for you.
  • sweetsoul said on Feb 11, 2007....
Sorry LJ I don't like bananas unless they're in banana bread etc. Eat too many as a kid and got sick once. Good protein though.
  • lioneljay said on Feb 11, 2007....
Now, ss, a mild childhood trauma is hardly a good reason to deny yourself one of life's true pleasures. :p
  • gingersoul said on Feb 11, 2007....

SS...i agree with  LJ.......bananas are darn good...rich on potassium and great for the stomach but - shut - loaded with sugar so careful with them!...

I wake up ravenous in the morning....no matter what i ate for dinner...if i dont eat within 20 minutes i get very crancky....my daughter knows it very well and my dog too...lol....

For breakfast i will have coffe o tea depending by the mood and protein. If i dont eat protein i know i will be starving at 10 already. My perfect combo is scrambled eggs (sometimes when i am super good only the white of the eggs), some whole wheat crackers, and 2 mini veggie patties and one banana.

If i am in a  bad girl mode i will eat waffles or toasts and jam (but no butter) and even some cookies.

    Just let me eat!....lo....

I've never been able to eat breakfast. My wife doesn't either. The only time we do is on vacation or visiting and those are usually later in the morning.

Nothing keeps me from coffee, though.

Very seldom do I eat breakfast and sometimes I don't eat till dinner.  If I can grab fruit for breakfast, it is usually bananas.

I don't eat breakfast, too.  But since I want to set a good example to my kids, I sit with them at the table and drink tea or a glass of chocolate. I know I should do better than that but my stomach gets a little weird when i fill it up in the morning. I eat around 9-10am.

I skip breakfast almost every day. But it's not made much difference to me. My job requires a lot of walking, and stairs. Plus I walk to work most days which is another half an hour.

If I change jobs I might have more trouble but been plessed with a great metabolism which just devours everything. Unfortunately that also meant i had to spend a fortune any time I wanted to get drunk at Uni etc. Ah well.
  • polarheart said on Feb 12, 2007....
Mimi, I have heard that to have breakfast is like jump-starting your metabolism for the day.

I am not hungry in the morning, but I've made a choice to eat breakfast, because I know its important and I take certain supplements in the morning so I know if I dont eat I'm going to feel sick from the pills.

My breakfast is a very small bowl of meusli / granola with live culture yoghurt (which is very good for the gut).

Since I have started eating breakfast regularly I have stopped picking at all kinds of junk during the day.

Hope you can get yourself to try it, even if its just one slice of toast in the morning for now.

When our kids were little, I used to get up on weekend mornings and cook breakfast. I hated every minute of it, but I did it because B expected it. The last thing I want to do in the morning is cook a big breakfast. Well, maybe not the last thing, but close to it. I gradually stopped doing it as the kids got older and could fend for themselves. And B learned how to cook his own french toast, pancakes and oatmeal. So he's the breakfast cook, barely. Now if I could only get him to clean up after himself.

I find it hard to eat in a morning when I'm up for work as do most. I usually travel an hour or two to my contracts so its daft o clock when I'm up but I try and force myself. Toast with jam or fruit or cereal / oats. If I dont eat I feel physically sick within around an hour. If I aint at work and get up at a reasonable time I can do like scrambled eggs, hash browns, tomatoes, mushrooms, beans the works. If I've eaten late, the mandatory drunken kebab or an Indian take away I wake up totally ravenous and would eat anything :) I know ya gotta eat early to kick your metabolism in, my mom used to say eat like a king in the morning, a prince through the day and a pauper at night. It works for me.
  • MissMimi said on Feb 12, 2007....
I've heard that too, 22DF, to eat your lightest meal in the evening. I guess I ineed to start paying attention to that.
  • mobil said on Feb 12, 2007....
Ok Mimi, put all the crap you read above out of your head, ok? C'mon !

OK, here's the deal, eat a good breakfast, even if you are not feeling like
eating, begin eating that good breakfast.
It's the first and most important meal, fills your tank so to speak. Got it?

Now, here comes lunch. The second most important meal of the day. Have
a good one, a healthy one. Should be your biggest meal of the day. Why?
Because you have the rest of the day to digest it.

Here we come to Supper. Small supper, light and healthy, all meals should be
healthy. This meal is consumed before bed, ya want to be a little hungry
going into that sack. You sleep better too.

Ok, that's the day, get up and start all over again. The people I've known
who live the longest, are people who habitualize their daily habits, eating
    included.

    Now, go get em Mimi........................
