How does something like this happen?

All non-essential government employees have been told not to work. Essential government employees like the police are still working but aren't being paid. I have to tell you that I would be looking for another job real quick. Most cops don't have extra money laying around for a rainy day. How long can they go without pay?

I've been reading articles on this subject for the last couple of days but none seem to go into it too deeply. If anyone has some good sources, let me know. There must be one heck of a pissin' match going on in the legislature.

"For future investment it makes people think that there is not a government that is stable enough to administer their own policies," said Chief Operating Officer Mark Juliano.

Is this a sign that our government is looking at failure or is it a sign that our government is too involved and when it fails to function, it takes down too many others with it?

Why did this happen in the first place? How bizarre!

They couldn't agree on a budget so there is no budget. I don't think there can be any excuse for this.

governor corzine and the state legislature cannot agree on the proposed new budget, so corzine took a page from clinton's playbook, perhaps buoyed by the idea that since the republican-controlled congress took the blame in the popular consciousness at the time that he'll come out of this smelling like a rose. i'm not at all convinced however that it's playing out the same now. ed

i don't believe it, could you provide a source of it? this is so weird.

oops, it ||{1}|| i was mistaken: the public is apparently going for it now just as we did previously. the link is to the NY times, which requires a free registration. i know there's a way around that theoretically but i'm unfamiliar with it. ed

Fans, I don't make this stuff up. I would have never dreamed up of a whole state government shutting its doors.

successwarrior: you apparently have forgotten your history. :> ed

Good point Ed. I think we are going to see more breakdowns in the future.

i don't know: this might have cost corzine a lot--he was primarily squabbling w/ fellow democrats. this is going to signal weakness to the republicans and i am fearful that the partisan politics are only going to become more venomous. ed

My guess is that unless it was in the news no one would have noticed.

I live in NJ. Did you know NJ has the highest real estate taxes in the nation? The taxes on my house are 14,000, and I live in a 4 bedroom colonial. The government really was on strike for a few days. No buget; no government. Impact on my life: I took my kids to a state park to hike. There were barracades up in front and a sign that said the park was closed due to the government being on strike. I took them out for an ice cream. Two days later the parks were open once more. NJ is a mess.
