Sometimes I like imagining myself at 80.  What I would look like, where I would be living and what kind of grandmother I will be (assuming I will be a grandmother).

My description of Grandma Waterstar:

I would like to live in a funny little, homemade house in the woods with a few private acres.  I would like the house to have a nice big front porch and a round tower room for my library and study.  I would like to have a stain glass window on the front door of a sunburst.  The main part of the house would be the Great Room.  It would have a big stone hearth and rectangular table with benches on either side.

I would have a garden and a tire swing.  I would also like to have an outdoor shower attached to a giant oak tree, so that grandkids could clean up before entering the house after playing in the mud.

Grandma Waterstar would always have home made cookies.  My kitchen would smell of drying herbs and homemade bread.   I would like to have sunday brunch at my house once a month.  Friends and family would come over for pancakes and scrambled eggs.  I would have my own chickens.

I would like to be slightly plump when I am eighty, my features rounded and soft.  I also would like to have two long white braids and smiling crows feet wrinkles around my eyes.

I would like to have one of those old card catalog cabnets.  Remember those from the library? How you used to look up books before computers.  Inside each of the draws would be a collection of objects, like the S drawer would have a shell, a sparrows feather, and a spoon.  If one of the kids went to a drawer and brought out an object, I would have a story that would go with that object.

what would you want to be doing at eighty?

when i was in my early 20's i'd try to imagine 40.
i always thought that by the time i got to 40,  i could let myself get chubby and eat anything and everything i wanted!  LOL  then i hit 40 and discovered you eat less and still gain weight!

80?  I hope i live in a house with a front porch and back porch.  i hope it's somewhere quiet with alot of open space....maybe near the ocean.
i like the idea of grandkids...a big kitchen...lots of gatherings.  I want some kind of portch swing...so i can sit outside and read and drink hmmm gin and tonics? lol or tea or something...

i wonder if i'll still be doing freaking sit ups at 80?
  • waterstar said on Feb 11, 2007....
lol, I know I'm not, I can't stand sit ups.  I perfer to squeeze my stomac muscles while I wash dishes.  It doest the same thing, and I feel like a champ doing killing two birds with one stone.  I want to look like a teapot when I'm 80.  I think when I'm about 70 I'll just start eating pound cake for breakfast.  That should do the trick!

Waterstar, I cannot and have not ever tried to envision myself in the future at whatever age. . .its just not something I know how to do.  When people say, where to you want to be / what goals to you want to have achieved in 5 / 10 / 20 years time?  I strike an absolute blank, because I simply dont know how to answer it.  Perhaps I'm just so busy trying to deal with the here and now, that the far lying years dont occur to me.

The way you envision yourself at 80 paints a lovely picture, but I must ask, if you have grandkids, do you also see yourself with your life partner at that point, or alone in that lovely house?

PS: did you take a look at the website I posted under your Glitch blog?

Oh, yes Polar I did look at the website!  Very cool.  I haven't gotten a chance to check on my other posts.

I see him there with me sometimes.

I like the idea of living in the same house my kids grew up in...I think that is neat to have their kids making memories in the same place they did. So I would want that...to be in the same house. I would also like to be plump...plump and jolly. :)
I want to spoil my grandchildren rotten... at 80 years old would they be great grandchildren though? My oldest would be 60...his kids maybe 30...yup...it's possible I would have great grandchildren at 80! :)

I don't want to think about being eighty, there are too many to see and it doesn't look good. What I would like to have is that house you describe- right now.

momsrock - it is possible I will be a great-grandmother at 80, cool.  I hadn't thought of that!  I'ld like to be jolly and kind, but kind of a no nonsense grandma, too you know what I mean?

beyond - old people rock!  man, no teeth and clothes that went out of fashion 50 years ago, the stuff you can get away with when you're old.  It'll be cool.

That house I would like to start building sometime in the next ten years, just got to pull my life together first! - that way maybe my kids will get a chance to grow up in it too!

I'm really looking forward to being old... you can be as rude as you like to people with impunity, and hit them with your walking stick. And tell outrageous stories about how things used to be and the things you achieved when you were younger. the possibilities for fun are abundant.

honestly, i have no idea what i'll be like by then--i have a ways to go yet before i get there, and i imagine who i am then will be shaped by the intervening time more than it will be by who i have been thus far.

that said, i hope it's not too different from now and that i'll be in decent health and state of mind.

i suppose the latter would be an improvement. :D

Dicconzane - would you really hit people with your walking stick? Sounds like your planning to be a cantakerous old fart - that does sounds like fun!

silverwhisper - no doubt - I think one of my biggest fears about growing older is losing my mind and being thought of as incompetent - they say women that take up knitting late in life are more likely to retain their mentel abilities.  Doing crossword puzzles too is supposed to help.  Its never too late or too soon to start thinking about the future!
