Is there anything more soul destroying in this world than searching for a job?
The endless hours of searching through advertisements online, in the newspapers in the bulletin sheets.
The writing and rewriting of application forms and letters. It simply isn't good enough to just copy and paste from one to the other, each must be personalised and made specific to the position advertised.
Selling yourself and presenting yourself as simply the best candidate for the job and, implicit in that, that they'd be idiots not to interview you.
The momentary relief having emailed or posted the application followed by the weeks of worry as you wait to find out if you have been shortlisted for interview.
Then the interview and finding out precisely what hoops they want you to jump through.
- The presentation; prove to us that you have the communication skills we require. Demonstrate your charisma and charm.
- The lesson observation. We don't trust you or your references so we want you to teach a class you've never met, show us how you gel with your pupils, demonstrate your classroom skills. Or better yet why don't you lead assembly for the whole school? That way we get to see your stand up comedienne act whilst you control 300 kids who don't know you from Adam...
- The panels; This position is so responsible it requires you to convince three separate panels of interviewers that you are the person for the job. Sure we ask some pretty dumb questions but then you have to make the answers relevant and specific don't you?
- And then the midday debrief. I'm sorry but you weren't considered suitable this time. They felt you lacked a certain something...
- Or if you are very fortunate; we were impressed. We'd like you to come back for one last interview before we decide whether to proceed or not...
I hate searching for jobs. I think I'd rather go to the dentist and have my teeth pulled.
