I once heard that when someone's Chinese astrological animal year comes up that person has completed a cycle in his or her life and the next one (another 12 years round the animal wheel) begins with changes and challenges.

This is the year of the pig, or wild boar, and my birthday is Sunday the 11th. I am 36 and that means three cycles of my life have passed. This being my year then I decided to attempt some new things, take some chances and face some challenges. I promised myself not to be slack this year (maybe even lose some weight). Even if something seemed impossibly out of reach before I decided I would summon the courage to take a few big steps in that direction. I am going to push both my writing and photography this year and get my ass up a few more mountains, particularly Mt. Hotaka, which has rebuffed me with nasty weather on three occasions so far (I was so close last year, making it to the summit of the neighbouring peak).

There are plenty of challenges I choose to face. I don't have to but I do to expand my horizons and tackle new learning experiences with the possibility of new successes. Some challenges, however, land in my lap and catch me off-guard. Last week I heard my parents bought an apartment and have put their house up for sale. They will move out at the end of May. I will be home at the beginning of May to attend a friend's wedding. That means my timing is perfect because I can spend the whole week of my holiday cleaning out all my things - books, comics, hocky cards, cds, photographs, magazines, nicknacks, furniture, clothes, Star Wars toys, etc. I have to sell it, store it, or send it to Japan. So, before I go I plan to do a bit of research to get some ideas where I can try to sell the things I don't need to keep anymore. I won't be doing any hiking, I guess.

In order to go home I need to renew my passport this year, and in order to come back to my job I need to renew my visa. The passport must be renewed first however, and I need my birth certificate, but the one I have, I found out, is no longer valid. I need to apply for a new one from Quebec. So my application time has suddenly been cut from comfortable to crazy, as in 'insanely short.' I have to send the application, wait for the certificate to come, apply for the passport, wait for the passport to be ready, then apply for the visa renewal. I am not worried yet though. As my mother says, it will all fall into place.

In the mean time, I have some articles to submit, photos to send, an exhibition to prepare, and a volcano to climb. On top of everything my girlfriend will move into my apartment at the end of this month.

Can this pig handle it all?

Oink, grunt. Do pigs lie in the mud?

Well, I hope you are happier than a pig in filth! :)

I was born in the year of the Dragon. I hope 2012 will be my year!

Your dilemma with your papers sounds similar to what I went through when I legally changed my last name upon marriage.

Seven years ago, one could apply for a new Social Security card by mail (I cannot believe it has been that long!). Here's the catch: you had to enclose original proof of identity. Who, in his right mind, would ever wish to part with a driver's license and birth certificate for weeks? What if they were lost in the mail? I always thought that was strange.

You should be as happy as a pig in *hit ! lol.  A pig, or it's wild relative the Boar, is an animal that can go from nirvana-like dozing to full speed action (flight) in a split second. I'm sure that you'll be more than up for the challenges that will come up.
  • secretlife said on Feb 10, 2007....

    happy birthday hotaka!

I, for one, am sure you can handle it all.....oink oink!

  • gingersoul said on Feb 10, 2007....

Hotaka........i wish you the best b-day of your life!!!

I join Secrete in a chorus of ...oink oink oink.. Can you hear us?? Secret, louder....

Come wrestling with me again in the mud....it will be my present for you...LOL.

I did the passport and green card visa this summer too....and, like you, i have a house situation waiting for me at home when i will be in Italy this summer....i am trying to push all my cards together...i know you can handle yours...wish you luck...

    {hug}

An invalid birth certificate. How does that work.?

Since you were not born..are you dead? If it was invalid..does that make
you a bastard? An invalid fetus?

    I am co confused here.

Happy birthday Hotaka, Happy Birthday to you, you smell like a piggy and you look like one too.  JK
I was born in the year of the monkey, and I am sure it explains my lustful desires for Gorillas.
In all seriousness happy birthday,  I was just thinking you and I have something in common, I used to be 36 too.
  • RollingC said on Feb 11, 2007....
Oh and btw.... Happy Birthday to You Hotaka....If you look like a Pig and Mom looks like a Monkey...ahhh....this is not coming out right....anyway, then I look like a Rabbit...
    ehhhh....  what's up doc?

oh we are almost one complete circle, we need the year of the lion, and the year of the rooster.  So does anyone have a cock?

Hey, Jade, now I am guessing your age, though I think you told us before. I like dragons. Did you know that according to the Scholastic calendar, Tuesday, January 16th was Appreciate a Dragon Day? Hope you were appreciated.

RollingC, My girlfriend's a rabbit. So's my sister. There sure are a lot of you out there. Wonder why there are so many rabbits?

Ginger and secret - A big wet-nosed oink to you too. Thank you. Hey, Ginger, did you see my carpet wrestling and chocolate pudding comment about you on the SoulCast perfect date blog? Pudding's gotta be better than mud, eh?

copsunited, glad you are still around. Yeah, I'm confused too. But then again, Quebec has always been a place of confusion. They're just trying to get back at the people who left la belle province.

mom (ha, ha), you're hilarious. Don't go looking to gorillas for big cocks. Gorillas have the smallest penis to body mass ratio of the major primates. They're all muscle and no balls. What you need is a chimp for sexual energy. Those guys can go several times a day without needing a nap.

silverW, I think it's a good thing too. We've been dating for over 7 years. I think she is worried about upsetting the balance in my life. I have to convince her that she will bring balance to my life. Anyway, it seems a go. We just talked about it today. The ball is rolling. Thanks for your comment.

  • gingersoul said on Feb 12, 2007....

    Hotaka......yes..i saw it.....and you are so right......chocolate wrestling is a LOT better......i wouldn't never stop......*wink wink- oink oink*...lol...

Is this moving in thing after7 years something that will lead the two of you to an officialized union (meaning marriage) or you think you will never go in that direction?

  • secretlife said on Feb 12, 2007....

lol look at ginger pushing you toward the altar!

    *nudge nudge*

  • gingersoul said on Feb 12, 2007....

Mine is just curiosity.....i would actually say that its never wise to mess up something that seems working nice.........

Oh oh.. Hotaka, watch out with that elbow...ouch.....i didnt mean you HAD to marry...... lol....

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! I hope it's a good one! I'll join ginger and secret in the "Oink Oink" chorus, LOL. I'm sure you'll be quite able to follow up on all your plans and get your documentation before it's time to go home. I think I was the year of the tiger, watch out piggy! Just Kidding, I don't eat pork.

LOL Hotaka I didn't realize you knew so much about the mating habits of the primate world.  LOL  Happy bithday!
  • hotaka said on Feb 13, 2007....

ginger and secret - she has the ring already, so ginger your time for a choco-pudding romp is running out [wink]. She is a little hesitant about things because she is worried she might be too crass for my taste. In a way, it's part of her charm. She makes me laugh.

Supermom! That comment could be taken more way than one. I don't know whether to be relieved or disappointed. Grrraaoww!

mom, you might be surprised about some of the things I know. How about that date? You ask the questions; I'll let you be the one to wear the 'expressions.'

  • mom said on Feb 13, 2007....
well if you insist. :)  Ok I have lots of expressions.  You little devil you.
  • JadeLondon said on Feb 13, 2007....
Yeah, I've mentioned my age a time or two. (Jade shudders.) Scary! :)

Appreciate A Dragon Day, huh? No, I sure didn't. I don't remember anything particularily tramatic happening on that day, and that was a difficult week. I would say that gentle reprieve was a silent vote of appreciation from the gods, if no one more corporal.

  • hotaka said on Feb 13, 2007....
Well then, Jade, call me Corporal Draco Amore. I'll cast a belated vote of appreciation your way. Thanks for helping make SoulCast such a great blog community, you little dragon, you.

    to you too hon :)
  • hotaka said on Feb 14, 2007....

Okay, ginger, do I bring the tub of chocolate on the plane to Texas or do we mix up a batch when I arrive?

Happy Valentine's day to all my darling ladies here on SoulCast. In Japan the girls give the boys chocolates on VD. Then the boys give the girls candy on March 14th. But I will settle for a bunch of hugs from all of you. Except ginger [lick, lick].

  • gingersoul said on Feb 14, 2007....

Hotaka, Hotaka....never heard they say: In Texas everything is bigger?

Leave the chocolate to me.....we need a lot of that heavenly food....i am already working out at the gym for the big occasion ........are you getting ready?....lol..

    *Lick lick*

he's a little piggie after all!

i want a front row seat to watch ginger get her licks in!

  • kruuyai said on Feb 15, 2007....
Hey Hotaka... I'm a pig too, but about one "life cycle" older.  What are some of the traits of pigs?
  • hotaka said on Feb 15, 2007....
You know, kruuyai, I am not sure. I read them once and found nothing really I could relate to. My Aquarian description is much more acurate. But I am enjoying being a pig since this is my year. I hope it's a great one for you too. Do you know anything about our animal sign?
  • hotaka said on Feb 15, 2007....

Okay, here's what I got from Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pig_%28Zodiac%29

"The Boar type is usually an honest, straightforward and patient person. They are a modest, shy character who prefers to work quietly behind the scenes. When others despair, they are often there to offer support. This type of person is reserved with those they do not know too well, but as time passes and they gain confidence, those around them may discover a lively and warm-hearted person behind that mask of aloofness. Despite those born in the year of pig having a wide circle of friends and acquaintances, they have few close friends who understand them and share their inner thoughts and feelings. It is easy to put trust in pig type; they won't let you down and will never even attempt to do so. Such people simply want to do everything right according to social norms.

"It is important to remember that these people are not vengeful creatures. If someone tries to take advantage of them, the pig type tend to withdraw to reflect on the problem and protect themselves. All they need in such situations is a little time to find a constructive way to respond. The people of the pig type are conservative creatures of habit. They dislike being made to travel too far from familiar surroundings, unless it is a trip to the countryside. They love nature and are never happier than when they are out somewhere, far from the city.

"There is a tolerant and peaceful side to their character. Such people are never afraid to allow others their freedom of expression; they do not want to cause arguments and if there is any way to avoid arguing, they will probably take this option. They are not weak, however, and if the situation forces them to fight these people will rise to the occasion, whether it is to defend themselves or those close to them. People of the Boar type are the most admired by others."

Okay, I take back what I said above in my previous comment. I think almost everything here applies to me except that part about not liking to travel far from home. I am a traveller. And I am not so shy under the right circumstances. The rest I can agree with almost completely. In fact, many traits actually coincide with my Aquarian nature. Who'd have thought?

  • hotaka said on Feb 15, 2007....

On that site there is a list of people who are also pigs.

And it says the roughly equivilant western astrology sign is Scorpio! Ugh! Not Scorpio. Scorpios have a way to get right into your skull and nag you to insanity. They can be so moody too.

  • kruuyai said on Feb 15, 2007....

LOLOLOLOL!  I am a Scorpio as well as a pig.... well I guess I know who you won't be inviting to your next birthday party!  :)  I'd say a bunch of the pig stuff applies to me with the exception of the following:

Such people simply want to do everything right according to social norms. (I've never been a conformist in any way, shape or form).

The people of the pig type are conservative creatures of habit. They dislike being made to travel too far from familiar surroundings, unless it is a trip to the countryside. (Not conservative, can't stand routine, and I live to travel).

They love nature and are never happier than when they are out somewhere, far from the city.  (I love nature, and I'm equally happy in both the city and the country... in fact, I need both in my life).

Sorry about being such a moody nag.  :)

  • hotaka said on Feb 16, 2007....
kruuyai, I knew I would put my foot in it with someone here but I didn't expect it would happen so soon. I have my opions about Scorpios because my mother is one and when she "has something she wants to talk about" it means four or five hours of "discussion" where she tries to make me understand I am completely wrong about something and she is totally right. She has a way of trying to make me sound really ignorant. My friend is a Scorpio too and her boyfriend complains to me about the same problems when having a "discussion" with her as I have with my mother. My girlfriend's favourite singer is also a Scorpio and from what I have seen his behaviour matches the moody trait well. When he's happy he's really fun (at the concerts) but if he's pissed about something he'll tell the audience and complain to anyone interviewing him later. Still, I shouldn't be surprised that my pig sign is closely related to the western sign that irks me the most. There may well be enough of my character in Scorpio to irritate me. Aquarians can also be frustrating.
  • hotaka said on Feb 16, 2007....
I might also add that Scorpios are really good at putting guilt trips on others.
  • kruuyai said on Feb 16, 2007....
well, see, the best way to deal with all this is for you to just accept that Scorpios are always right.  :)
  • hotaka said on Feb 16, 2007....
I'm sorry I wasn't listening. My Aquarian mind was somewhere else thinking about pikes.
  • kruuyai said on Feb 16, 2007....
well, I hope you feel guilty about that... lol  :)
