Does anyone know anything about herbal remedies for depression?

I've struggled with depression all my life (though for the longest I would never have admitted that), but it wasn't until after the birth of my daughter that I decided to do something about it. My doctor put me on prozac initially, which didn't work. Then he switched it to effexor. He told me that we can up the dosage until it works for me - as high as we needed. Well, we've upped the dosage to 150 mg a day. (That was probably three months ago.) That dosage is still not working for me either; however, I really don't think it is healthy to keep upping the dosage. I located an article about a month or so back which said that effexor was one of the worst drugs to have to come off of. You basically become addicted to it. I don't want to be forced to take a drug for the rest of my life, but I do want to kick the depression.

Recently, I was sick, so I used that time to ween myself off of the antidepressant, so I wouldn't notice how bad the lack of the medication was making me feel since I already felt like shit anyway. Worked out pretty well.

Now, however, I am taking nothing and though the effexor wasn't working completely I do believe it took some of the edge off. Someone help me please! I know there has to be a more natural way to take care of this problem. Is there anyone who has gone through this before? What worked for you? I would greatly appreciate any help, suggestions, etc.

hstock, if you have access to a reputable chinese drugstore, the pharmacologist would probably suggest a couple of possible herbal mixtures in tea form. i have john heinerman's science of herbal medicine, which offers two good herb combinations:

    * a combination of black cohosh root, capsicum fruit, valerian root, mistletoe herb, ginger root, st. johnswort herb, hops flowers, and wood betony herb
    * another is a combination of capsicum fruit, siberian ginseng root, and gotu kola herb.
    * ginseng root by itself is an effective anti-depressant, aside from its other benefits

take note that these are to be taken in moderation as not to trigger counter-indications. also, if you take herbal remedies, never mix with synthetic prescription drugs. bee pollen is also supposed to help. and great sex of course, although it can be seen too as a resulting benefit, not as remedy ... ;-) and long talks with friends who have infectious smiles and laughter ;-)

these herbal remedies should of course be seen as only helping the mind regain some balance so it can deal better with the real and complex roots of the depression.

hope that helps. hey, i think i'll post this on my blog!

Thank you for your concern, silver.

Thanks for your helpful information, moon. I don't believe there is a Chinese drug store near by. However, I probably could order it online. I haven't looked yet. I've been doing some of my own research online and have found quite a bit of useful information. I'll probably post it on here at some point. I'm sure I'm not the only one who struggles with depression and would rather not have to be on drugs all my life.
