I've been trying to keep my weight under control but have been failing. And I recently read a book on weight loss about the benefits of a vegan diet, and I'm not sure what that is exactly.

Mostly, what shocked me was the inhumane treatment of animals at slaughter houses. All my life, I grew up buying my food from a store, nicely packaged in a sheet of cellophane. I never thought of the crap they feed the animals, their living conditions, how they are treated and what the animals might be experiencing. It literally made me sick to my stomach.

Now, I have a hard time eating any dairy, beef, poultry, or pork because all I see are animal faces. I've known for years about the antibiotics and steroids put into animals and feed but never once thought how it was affecting my weight loss! Duh!!!

So, if you are vegan, please share how you came to be vegan and what the biggest obstacles are that you face with your diet. I'm afraid of not getting the right amounts of minerals and vitamins and then feeling run down.  Maybe Flexitarianism is the way to go?

Much appreciated!

RC, you're gonna need to take a lot of supplementary vitamins to maintain that lifestyle. you might lose weight, but you'll lose other things as well. there's a lot of stuff the human body needs from some form of other animal life.

One of the things I've noticed is the mention of rice, pasta and bread (carbs) in this diet.  Now, I do not follow the low carb craze but I do know that carbs break down into sugar and sugar left unused by the body is stored as fat (that is years and years of reading health books speaking here).

I just don't want to make a huge mistake and follow a lifestyle that is going to defeat my purpose.

In all honesty, I don't know what is good and what is not good for me anymore! lol!  This diet or that diet, fat free, low carbs, protein diet, blah, blah, blah.  Help!  I just want to be healthy!

RC, any nutritionist worth his/her salt will tell you that if you follow the old food pyramid thing we all learned in school, you'll be fine. your body needs stuff from meat. a lot of vegans have brittle bones, i understand.

rc, i've been a vegan for a while now and i've slimmed down my waistline a little but that was it when it came to weight loss, but since i've made the switch my skin is clear all the time, even when i'm on my period, i feel lighter inside plus my fat density has gone down by 6% which is great for a healthy body, plus my heart is stronger my bones are fine, and i just feel better. about all this multivitamin nonesense, if you eat the right foods, ie veggies fruits legumes etc, you'll be fine. i take 1 multivitamin, 1 b12, and 2 omega 3s everday, everything else i get from good foods and drinks. make sure that, if you do the switch, you do whole grains, organic and low fats.

plus if you excersise you'll be fine when it comes into factoring carbs. if you lose weight w/o exercising, like atkins, then you lose muscle mass along w/ fat, exercise is essential to any healthy lifestyle; nothing extreme but enough to make you respiratory system get going.

RC, In  a lot of wiccian books it talks about the energy one will recieve from the mother earth through things that we eat that are grown in her soil. Once you start eating the fruits of her love, changes in your body will take place and meat will not taste the same and your body will also tell you that it does not care for the meat. However I do recomend that you eat red meat at least once a week so you can still get the M-IRON that your body needs  and the only source for this is red meat.

I am 5'5 and when I weighted myself this morning(I've been avoiding it) I tip the scales at 150. It's all showing in my hips and backside. But I know the circulation stuff is going to start up soon too. But I really have learned to LIKE food. So yes diet...
