Texas Governor Rick Perry signed an executive order requiring all schoolgirls as young as 11 years old to be vaccinated with the cervial cancer drug, Gardasil, at a cost of $360. Any parent knows vaccinations can be dangerous and can have adverse side effects that can sometimes lead to death. This is the first state in the nation to take such action which, in my opinion, is a violation of parental rights. This drug is not candy and offers no guarantees, while at the same time assumes many young girls are sexually active. When I first saw the commercial I wondered why anyone would ever use it. This is a mistake.

Texas finally gets something right and people start complaining.  If you read it parents can opt out of it for their children.  And a much bettr question is why parents would rather their children die of HPV than take the cure.  Of course some people have no bussiness being parents.

SeanRenaud - No, I didn't see anything about parents being able to opt out. The executive order said it is required, not optional, from what I read. You cannot get cervical cancer through casual contact as with measles, mumps, etc., therefore, schools should not be involved. Having this vaccination is no guarantee that someone will not get the disease. Also, cervical cancer is curable if caught early enough. If you can tell me you know that there are no short or long term adverse effects associated with this vaccine, then, maybe I would change my mind. By the way, do you personally know anyone who has had the disease? I know two women both of whom were cured after a couple of visits to the doctor. This is inappropriate for young children and should only be given when the individual can make an informed decision. Eleven year olds should not be having sex, if a parent is doing their job right. You are correct, if people don't want the responsibility of raising children and would rather push it off on the government, then no, they shouldn't be parents. I guess you are also unaware that some of the tests they try to force expectant mothers to get can cause deformities in children at birth. This is not a black and white issue, as although there may be benefits, try being a parent who's child suffers the consequences if something goes wrong. In my opinion, the only one who benefits here is the drug manufacturer.

sean, HPV is as ariene notes not easily contagious, which removes it from the litany of highly-contagious diseases for which vaccinations are required. the less government meddling, the better, i say.

Ed, I do agree with you. I did see what Sean was talking about where currently parents in Texas can opt out of vaccines if they file papers objecting based on religious or certain other reasons. But, it also said that they want to make it mandatory across the country. not optional, for kids. Since the manufacturer stands to make billions, it makes me wonder what the real motivation is behind this move. If many of these proposals are truly introduced by women in government, I'm disappointed, but not surprised.

HPV is only contracted through sex.   Duh.  Of course a vaccine only works if you get it BEFORE you contract it.  As for opting out of it.  Texas allows parents to opt out of inoculations by filing an affidavit objecting to the vaccine on religious or philosophical reasons.  (http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/APStories/stories/D8N1TCI80.html) I copy and pasted the first sentence of the 12th paragraph.

They're is a maximum age at which this vaccine is no longer suggested, 26, why because its to late at that point.  Besides as we've also been discussing rape is an issue here.  Unless you guys are suggesting that rape can be blamed on the victim or that your ignoring the fact that ONE in THREE girls are raped/molested at some point in their lives (and that's just what's reported) then you still don't have ground to stand on about parents telling their girls not to be sluts.

Next NO vaccine or anything medicinal is 100%.  None, there are people allergic to bees, vanilla beans, milk, penicillin.  You name it can kill you but you don't halt milk in schools.  So I can't tell you there are no long or short term.  I've got a scar from where I was innoculated against small-pox.  Another guy had it spread pretty bad.

Now this year an estimated 4000 women will die cervical can

Sean - It seems you live in an awfully dark, gloomy world where girls grow up anticipating that they too may be a victim of rape or molestation and need the government to step in to possibly prevent them from maybe getting cervical cancer of which HPV is responsible for 99% of cases. I prefer to be an optimist, still believing that prevention through education, self-empowerment and prosecution is the key to reducing crimes against females. It's interesting that you're saying "at some point in their lives", but making these shots mandatory is taking away choice when a girl is too young to make an informed personal decision herself. Using your reasoning, perhaps birth control pills should also be mandatory for young girls to prevent them from getting pregnant due to whatever. The problem with this is that long term use of the pill can increase the risk of cervical cancer. You keep emphasing that parents can opt out, but aside from the fact that not all states would allow this, if it is so easy, why bother signing an executive order requiring the shots at all. The drug manufacturer, whom Perry is associated with, will make billions and although they don't expect any life-threatening symptoms there is no guarantee.

Ok first is your problem that money is being made? I mean I know that there are people who are so rabidly anti-capitalist that if ths Vaccine wer falling off trees it would kill their argument.

As for taking away a choice we are talking about children, there are literally hundreds of decisions that we take away from them.  We trust parents to make the right decisions for their children.  So to get this back on case I need to clarify a few things.

I believe in protection through education.  I don't see how and educated person could not want this though but yor logic is sound.

    1. If this drug were being produced at cost (hence no profit)
    2. Every state was required to allow parents to opt out of the vaccine for any reason they choose.
    3. If the parents (and if the girls are old enough that it could be considered reasonable) the girls themselves are given all of the facts upright prior to the vaccine.

If thos things were all in place would you be against it being a one of the highly suggested/mandatory vaccines?
  • Ariene said on Feb 03, 2007....
Sean, I'm not at all against profit. If 2 and 3 were in place, I would not be against it being a suggested vaccine.
  • Redhead said on Feb 08, 2007....
Sean, you are sorely mistaken.  First, the opt out feature for Texas parents is a cumbersome process which goes against the statute that allows it.  (38.001) a parent must furnish their name, mailing address, name of child and their date of birth and there is a 2 year expiration on the affidavit.  The statute requires the department to offer a blank affidavit and no expiration, but until the health department is challenged they will also continue to overstep their boundaries.

Second, the studies on this vaccine are mediocre at best.  The FDA allowed the placebo to be a potentially reactive aluminum placebo instead of the standard saline placebo.  This would lead to artificial immune response.  Never mind the fact that the clinical study trial itself is a joke, which assumes all subjects are homogenous and offers no detail to the susceptibility of each subject to any given cause.  Back in the 70/80s it was "rumored" that aluminum contained a causal link to breast cancer, which has not been thoroughly disproven to those who study the data in its entirety.  Odd, how a vaccine "used" to prevent one form of cancer contains a heavy metal related to causing another?  Let's not forget that it is hoped that the revenue Merck generates from this vaccine is in excess of 2 billion dollars, much needed income after the Vioxx losses.

Third, a study by two Berkeley scientists raised significant doubts as to whether HPV was even the causal factor.  Numerous subjects have also had severe side effects, which include headache, fever, nausea, vomitting, appendicitis, PID, seizures and unconciousness.  The number of girls in the study that are in the age range targeted for this poison were less than 1200 and they were not monitored for long term reactions.  That is more than inadequate.

Vaccine Injury is the only injury which carries a 3 year statute of limitations.  What if your daughter received this vaccine and four years later was deemed infertile?  You're shit outta luck.   Not only is there this limitation, if you claim damage you must file that claim in a special vaccine court.  The Vaccine Injury Act of 1986 removed liability from the drug manufacturer regardless of the outcome of that "litigation".  So, even if your daughter's infertility were caused by this vaccine, nowhere in the outcome of that mediation will that be recognized.

Pick your head up from that green grass you are grazing and see the tag on your ear my friend.

Red, thanks for the information you provided. I thought there were more side effects from this drug, but I couldn't remember where I had heard about them. I don't think most parents will choose to give their kids this vaccine if they are given all of the facts and I certainly don't think teens will want it.
  • Redhead said on Feb 08, 2007....
    Ariene,
No problem, I actually posted this comment after I posted my lovely letter to King Perry himself so I duped some of it here.  The worst thing about this vax are the study trials and the aluminum adjuvant in the placebo.  By all of the subjects in the study suffering side effects, it gives the misconception that the vaccine is safer than it actually is.  There are several studies in PubMed and other sources that outline the problems with heavy metals being used as adjuvants in human vaccines.  More so with Mercury, seeing that it is the second toxic substance on the planet.  You can't throw a thermometer in a landfill, but you can inject it into a child via vaccination - I fail to see the logic there at all.

Women with normal immune response will clear this vaccine in time, and it is certainly detectable via routine pap smears.   I am also upset that the focus is being placed upon the female population, when males can just as easily be infected.  The fact that at one time or another 80% of the population has been exposed and/or infected with HPV, males and females alike - I'm rather irritated that it's being misconstrued as a "cervical cancer vaccine".  It's not.  The US National Cancer Institute has also claimed that the causation is unknown.
