A while back I posted needing help for my Epson Stylus Color 440 printer.  I was trying to install it to my laptop.  Moonriver gets 1,000 kow tows from me for his help.

He guided me where I needed to look for the correct driver.  I went there.  I got myself more confused due the fact that I'm not really a printer genius.  I spent days and days trying to avoid tossing the printer out the window.

This afternoon, I gave it one more try.  I deleted its installation and started from scratch.

When the installation wizard asked me if I had a disk, I lied and said no.  It downloaded the driver I needed lickety split.

"Eureka!", I thought

Still wouldn't work.  I said a few discouraging words.  Then I thought, "Why don't you look at the settings for the old printer?"

Sometimes I have the occasional good idea.

I had forgotten to set the printer port setting as a USB port.  Checked a box and now I'm printing.

How simple was that?

Moon, thank you for all of your patient and helpful advice.  I feel so happy to have this little techno victory under my belt.

    Bravo.

CW, one of my all-time favorite books is Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. In it, Robert Pirsig meditates on mechanical repairs - among many other things, the history of western philosophy being one of them. He offers a very simple and, in my experience, a highly effective way of handling just-can't-figure-it-out moments like this. He suggested lying down, sitting in a relaxed position, or otherwise configuring yourself so that you're quiet and peaceful. Then, just look at the problem in its full context.

I followed this advice many times, but one in particular comes to mind. I had resolved to change the clutch in a sports car that I owned once and that meant disengaging the clutch housing from the engine. But since there wasn't enough room to do it from underneath, I had to remove the entire engine. About 95% of the way through pulling out the engine I was stuck: the engine seemed to be completely disengaged from the car but it still would not lift free. A half hour of tugging and pulling and swearing brought no results.

So I sat down and just got quiet as I stared at the car and its open engine bay. After a while the image of the engine's mounting points from the repair manual came into my head and slowly I came to see in my mind how the two lower mounts had to be disengaged. Three minutes later the engine was free of the car and the rest of the repair went smoothly.

A quiet mind is the answer to many of life's perplexing moments.
