I thought I'd seen it all, well with mandatory tipping, along with tip jars at Chicken Delight and other take out food businesses. What I never anticipated was the introduction of a "tip jar" at my local 7-Eleven, along with the removal of the "need a penny, take a penny dish". They don't even make sandwiches here. So, now we are being asked to tip employees for merely taking our money. This might be convenient for employers who don't want to give raises, but it makes me uncomfortable. No, I don't and never will tip in this manner.

I haven't run across this yet. I don't believe it will go over. Imagine this expanding to every place you pay for any item purchased, what a bummer.I wouldn't tip this way either. -

When I went back to 7-Eleven today, the jar was gone. I don't know if it was permanently removed or just for the day shift.
beyondtheveil - This has been going on for years in my area. I used to go to Chicken Delight when I didn't feel like cooking. Since it's only take-out, I'd order by phone, then pick up. Then one day, probably over 6 years ago, I saw a tip jar which was the first time I had seen this practice. A few times I left a tip, simply because I knew the people from going in there over the years. Eventually, I tired of it and my visits became fewer and fewer until I finally stopped buying from them at all. Now, if I get bad service in a restaurant, I won't tip. As a former waitress and cashier when I was a teenager, I would have never thought that I was entitled to a tip just for doing my basic job.
