I am a smoker, and I will never say that I am not, and I will never quit. This is my choice.

There are people who are smokers like me and then there are smokers that try to quit, or deny smoking, and there is always the peope dieing or dead from smoking. This is my addiction. At least I have decided to chose something legal.

So what do you think about smoking/smokers.

I have no probelm. It's legal, it's your choice, and If you want to do it, DO IT!

Have you heard that in Upstate NY counties are changing the age that you can buy cigarettes from 18 to 19. They think that this will prevent kids from smoking....HAHAHAHAHAHAHA I will tell you from personal experience. If the kids want to smoke they will have friends that are smokers of age, and you will never stop them! Some parents only drive them to do it more. I have smoked since I was 12. No matter what my mother said I always found a way.

Did you know that if both of your parents are or were smokers that you are more likely to become a smoker???? So think about that if your a smoker trying to tell your kids not to smoke.

Well you tell me your thoughts...I would really like to know......

Sore subject!  My hubby just quit and is driving me nuts.  I am proud of him, happy for him, glad he will maybe be around longer,  but, I can't quit cold turkey like he did.  Now he is irritated with my smoking up the house, not to mention the short temper from withdrawal to deal with.  I'll quit if I'm ready, like he did.  It really irritates me that there are less and less places to go where you can smoke in public--even some bars here.  What's a good cold beer without a cigarette to enjoy with it, if you are a smoker?  I respect others, but, hey!  Everyone is making me feel like scum!

I am a smoker and have been for almost 45 years.  I enjoy
    smoking.
Both my ex-husband and myself are smokers.  My daughter
abhors smoking and when I am at her house I honor her wishes
and I do not smoke around her.
We all make choices in life and smoking is mine.  I must say
though it drives me nuts when I am in a smoking area, just for
instant, at a casino and someone who does not smoke sits
beside me  and then begins waving their hand in my face.  Good
grief there are no smoking sections and I do not ever ever smoke
    in a no smoking section.

    wombat,
I hate those bars where you can't smoke, It is the dumbiest thing in the world!!!! That is great that your hubby quit! good for him! Good luck to you! It is very hard in that situation, him not smoking, and you smoke......Try to have a spot where you smoke, and he can stay away from it, like at your computer. it might work out. Thanks for your input!

    shichi,
that is great that you dont smoke where people dont like it. I do that at my mother-in laws!  Thank you for your input!

dataentryjob87:  So funny you should say that!  My computer sits facing a corner, and I lean up and blow the smoke over the top of my screen.  I guess it filters around to blow up my silk jammie bottoms, and gives me second hand smoke if I fart.
  • dataentryjob87 said on Jan 29, 2007....
I smoke at my computer! It's my favorite place to smoke. But you have to make sure that you windex your screen because the smoke will build up. My screen is always dirty. Get a papertowel and wipe that sucker off....you will shock yourself!
  • wombat said on Jan 29, 2007....
My eyesight is too bad from smoking to know if my screen is dirty.  I have windex and paper towels and I know how to use em' (giggle) But will I shock myself, or simply get shocked?     zzzzzzzzsssssstttttttt?

I smoke like an arab wherever I can, love it always have should give up for health reason but fuck it! I love smoking. HB smokes a pipe and he will I dare say always smoke. Only on e of my parents doesn't smoke, sis does, pretty much most of my friends do too.  I also do not smoke where people I am with don't, I will walk away somewhere else.  You can actualy still smoke in bars here - it's an outside area where pretty much EVERYONE sits because pretty much everyone here smokes.  Hmm feel like having one right now....
  • wombat said on Jan 29, 2007....
smoke like an arab......  crackin' me up, Lucy.   (do you also "walk like an egyptian?")
  • curmudgeon said on Jan 29, 2007....
I used to smoke. I quit. Then after the NYC blackout a couple years ago I started again. Then I quit. I just don't feel like it anymore.

Unless, of course I'm watching a movie like Backdraft or Platoon  or The Hunt for Red October where everyone is lighting up.

I have nothing against smokers. I like second hand smoke. And I love cities like Vegas where you can still smoke indoors wherever you want.

Those asswipes who get all finicky around cigarettes are just rediculous. Little do they realize the amount of carbon monoxide they're inhaling when they go out for a nice, healthy jog.
  • dataentryjob87 said on Jan 29, 2007....

I think that other enviromental probelms will kill you first. The gov't probably blames smoking for the campaign money. HAHAHA!!! The gov't will never get rid of us smokers!!!!

I have noticed that when I watch movies and someone is smoking, i start smoking. I dont know why, but you just have to!!!

Thanks for all the input everyone!!!

As I am sitting here smoking, I am wondering....... Why do people hate smokers????  I understand those who have had loved ones die, and some people think that it stinks, but what are other reasons......

Can anyone think of other reasons?

mommyof2:  Just made me remember my first cigarette--at the drive-in with my girlfriends.  Someone gave me one and I tried to light it by sticking it up to a lighter THEY were holding up lit.  I guess, like our dear ex-prez, I didn't inhale.  They laughed at me, of course.  Later I smoked a whole pack of my brother's Camels one night and got sick.  After that, I smoked to fit in, and with one boyfriend, could only have one if I could "flip" it in the air and catch it.  I learned fast, grasshopper....

    and yes, I stink.

Smokers are pathetic losers out to kill themselves and everyone around them. I know. I used to be one almost 30 years ago. I am not disturbed by it unless I am in a closed in space with it, like a restaurant or on a bus or something. If I can get away from it, no problem. I love how people go outside to smoke ... right around the door. But, at the same time, I feel sorry for them because of their lack of will power. I quit easily. All 450 times.

my very first cigarette experience (believe it or not) was when i was seven. yes, a first grader. haha. during that time, my father still smoked, and when i asked him how it feels to smoke, he made me take one puff. and the next puff i had happened 13 years later. it was my college roommate who "taught" me how to smoke. then i smoked nonstop. to keep me awake and everything. it made me high. i tried to stop. i am not the type who can't go on a day without smoking. i can go for months without smoking. but once the urge gets me, ill smoke nonstop. i don't know if im classified as an occasional smoker or what... but i love smoking. i mean, yes im a medical student and i know all the complicatios and diseases you can get if you smoke but what the hell... we're all gonna die eventually. LOL.

Years ago  we would go and visit my sister-in-law and her husband, who were not smokers.  His parents smoked so they "allowed" smoking in their house.  They invited us for a weekend visit but neglected to say anything about their new now smoking ban.  Instead when we arrived there was a big sign at the back door.  THANK YOU FOR NOT SMOKING.  To me it seemed they had a very smug look on their face when we were greeted.

We invited them for the weekend and I in turn had a big sign at my back door that stated  THANK YOU FOR NOT BREATHING WHILE I SMOKE.

I thought it was quite humorous and made a point seeing as how I did respect their wishes when I was in their house, but drew the line when they expected me not to smoke in my own house because they were visiting.

Great stories everyone!!! It's just so exciting that smokers can all feel special in this blog! It's about us!!

I will tell you about the first time mom caught me!

It was my 12th birthday, and us girls had the party fun; opening presents, and eating cake...blah blah blah

We got to hang out in the shed which had an attic space. We were hanging out, and my cousin Jen smoked. She told me to light a smoke, and show everyone how to smoke. I took the cigg and light it and inhaled. (too much) I coughed, and everyone laughed. We had put the butts in a pepsi can. When we got up the next morning, we thought that we got rid of the can in the weeds.....But you know what....we got rid of the wrong can. My mom went up in the attic space to clean up, and found the can. OMG! She called all of us in the house, and questioned us. Jen took the blame, but my mom knew that I did smoke. It sucked. She claimed she would break my finger off if she every caught me again. When I was about 16 she just let me do it. She figured out I was going to do it, with or without her permission.

Go ahead laugh at me!! I do!

Thanks again for all the great stories!

Hi ! dej87, I feel pleased in subscribing to you on this blog. I am a chain smoker. I have had a mild stroke after my visit to America but the cause of that was not smoking but the unfortunate incidents. According to the Indian mythology the Gods also used tobacco. My wife died 20 years back but of all the best companions it is the cigarette.    Hats of to you and the smokers of the world.

Great article.  I myself am a smoker and i wish i could quit but i dont see that happening anytime soon.  I think it's ridiculuos that smoking is being banned in so many places.  I mean we smokers have rights just like nonsmokers!!!!

    PS i hate closet smokers!!!!!

  • dataentryjob87 said on Jan 30, 2007....
I am with you on the smokers rights!!! Non-smokers get so many privileges, what about the smokers....noooooo... we are "bad" people. F*** that! We are a miniority that deserves respect! Their choice is not to smoke...so what if we decide too! I won't quit! I don't need to conform to the gov't ways...they can kiss it!
  • MissMimi said on Jan 30, 2007....

I am a non-smoker, but I did smoke for a while in college. My son smokes. My best friend smokes. But smoking isn't allowed in my home, because I can no longer tolerate the smoke, and because I breathe with the assistance of oxygen, so open flames are a big no-no.

I am not, nor have I ever been a militant anti-smoker.  Anybody that hasn't been living in a cave for the last 40 or 50 years knows that it's bad for you.  My son will quit when he's ready.  (His girlfriend doesn't smoke and doesn't like it so maybe he'll quit sooner rather than later.)

  • silverwhisper said on Jan 30, 2007....
i'm a smoker. i hate that i am but i try not to worry too much about it. i am acutely aware that i am paying for the privilege of slowly poisoning myself when i buy a pack. and you know what? i don't care.

i am scrupulous about not disturbing non-smokers in the area w/ my cigarette smoke unless they demonstrate the dramatic lack of sense to choose to stand next to me when i already am smoking, then become upset about it. they should have seen i was smoking and if they didn't like it, they should have alighted elsewhere.

I am a smoker.  I have to go to extremes to get one in.  I will not smoke around my Daughter.  I haven't had one yet, today and it's 4:30.  I am craving one.  I just don't feel like changing clothes and taking my robe on and off.  I have quit too many times.

Neither of my Parent's smoke.  My Dad smoked when he was in the service, but quit before I was born.  My Aunt on my Mother's side smokes...one out of 14 of them smokes, but she hides it and my Mother denies that she smokes even though we bagged her several times.  One of my Sister's smokes, the other one quit cold turkey about 3 years ago.

In MA, you can't smoke anywhere inside.  NH, you can in some places, bars, yes.  The advantage of living on the border, people don't go out in Boston as much in the winter time, lol!

i'm now a non-smoker; i smoked off and on in college, but mostly when i was out drinking and not during other parts of the day. both of my parents smoked for years.

i don't have a problem with a few smokers smoking around me; i only have problems with many people smoking in the same place because  it makes my eyes burn horribly after awhile.  but that is my issue to deal with not theirs.

my friends who smoke would never smoke in my house, even if/when i put out an ashtray for them.  they still all go outside.  i never ask them to.
  • dataentryjob87 said on Jan 30, 2007....

    Zayda,

That's nice that your friends respect you like that. They are real friends. Most smokers do have respect for other people, exspecially non-smokers. It is hard to be a smoker. That's good that you don't smoke.

    Everyone,

Does everyone remeber when Peter Jennings died?

He had quit smoking like 15-20 years ago. And then he died of smoking related cancer.......Do you know what that said to me? It said that if you quit smoking you are at more of a risk to die from it. When your body gets addicted to something, and then one day you decide that you aren't going to give it to your body, your body will do wierd things. Think about the people that have drug withdrawls, and the wierd shit that it does to them. I think that if you quit smoking your body will kill you for not getting the nicotine, no matter if it takes a month or 20 years...... What do you guys think?

  • wombat said on Jan 30, 2007....

During a job interview,  one of the questions on the form was,  "Do you, or have you ever taken drugs?"   I checked no (hrumph). She asked me later, "Do you smoke?"  I said, "Yes."   She replied, "Then you take drugs."    I told her I drank beer, also, if she really wanted to know.  I got the job.
  • mom said on Jan 30, 2007....
I quit about 11 years ago.  My husband still smokes, it doesn't bother me.  Most non smokers do not like the smell, it is pretty bad.  I think if we all just respect each other then there should be no problem.  My husband smokes in the car but he rolls the window down until he is done.  I think that the laws that have been passed for smokers are rediculous.  I have known some obnoxious smokers and polite smokers.  The obnoxious ones are the ones that don't care if it bothers anyone.  The polite ones will usually ask if anyone minds if they smoke.  Something tells me that the obnoxious ones are obnoxious anyway.
  • dataentryjob87 said on Jan 30, 2007....

    wombat,

If ciggs are a drug, are they regulated by the FDA????? I dont think so, but i will look for the answer. And as far as I am concerned pot is a drug, coke is a drug, pills are drugs, not ciggs. That is fucking rediculous! And as for Peter Jennings I think that you can look his story up. He was a new caster for channel 9(9wysr.com) or (abcnews.)New York news.

I tell everyone that story when they tell me I should quit. I might die from smoking, but I WILL NOT die from smoking, and quiting.... I am not a quitter!!!

The only time I quit cold turkey was when I found out I was preggers!  The day I found out I threw the pack away.  I didn't have one again until we found out she had a heart condition.  The first thing I did was go to the store, bought a pack and a lighter and lit up...It was the best butt I had ever had at the worst time.
