Like it or not, smoking will be banned in all public indoor spaces in the UK by summer 2007. Different areas of the country will be affected at varying times.

Smoking in all indoor public places will be banned. Many places - such as cinemas and public transport - have rarely permitted smoking in recent years, and so it will be places like pubs, restaurants, nightclubs and private members' clubs that feel the biggest impact of the ban.

I am a smoker myself and am currently torn with regards to how I feel on the ban.. I do feel that it shouldn't be allowed in restaurants but I do like to light up if I'm out with friends having a drink in a pub.. Lots of pubs now have non smoking areas too which I thought was a good idea although admittedly smoke does travel.

I'm seriously considering trying to quit.. Tried before and failed but I'd rather try again very soon before the ban kicks in.. Not just because of that but for health reasons and cost too.

So, are you a smoker / non smoker? What are your views?

where i live, that ban is already in place. as a smoker myself, i don't really mind, to be honest. there's a health hazard issue here.

and while i do like a smoke w/ a drink, those who don't smoke should be entitled to enjoy a drink w/out it. since as smokers what we do is harmful to ourselves as well as others, i accept this, so long as it's indoors.

Comfort, I am a non-smoker - have never smoked and never will.

I am from South Africa (now living in the UK) where the smoking ban has been in place for years now.  Where restaurants had smoking and non-smoking areas they had to separate the two areas from each other usually by use of glass or perspects pannels and with a smoke door.  The smoking area also had to be fitted with extraction fans and clean air was to be continuously pumped in.

I think this idea worked very well and everybody was happy.  The restaurant / pub owners had to invest some money in the beginning, but in the long run it did benefit them.

When I went to eat or drink with smoker friends we would go into the smoker section, but it was not half bad because the smoke did not hang in the air as before.

So, I think the smokers in the UK will survive just fine.

i think it will help people give up but only if they really want to! im a smoker and im dreading it! ive been smoking for about 8 years and i cant see myself ever giving up! i think people should have the choice to smoke when and where they want to. i am a bit worried how i'll cope in situations where i cant smoke. i read about this stuff in the london paper thats a gel you put on your hands to take away your cravings. i think its called nicofix, ive had a look on the website and might order some to prepare for the 1st!
