Witness the road to tyranny first hand.

I'm still waiting for our SC conservatives to comment on this. Their silence speaks volumes.

    Yes...I am also quite interested in what our Soul Cast conservatives have to say.

    Well...then let me start this by saying that Alberto Gonzalez should have gone a few more years in studies of the English language because he was sounding like an uneducated buffoon in that video.

    I think I understand what he is trying to say.  I think he's trying to say that if Habeas Corpus is never given, then it can never be taken away.  However, Habeas Corpus is not something that he or any government official has the power to give.  It is something that is given by the Constitution.  Obviously, our forefathers wanted us to have the right to Habeas Corpus even though it is not directly stated in the Constitution.  If they didn't want us to have it, they never would have said that it can't be taken away.  Our forefathers probably had more faith in the interpretation of the Constitution: that was a dumb move.

    Now, I don't know about you guys, but I don't like my government officials to play word games with the Constitution.  I like my government officials to interpret the laws of this land to the best of their abilities and try to convey, in the best way that they know how, the full extent of our forefathers' original intent.

    So...Alberto Gonzalez...what's it going to be?  Another game of Balderdash?  Or some serious discussion on the topic of Gitmo?

    That video actually left me feeling a bit sick to my stomach.  Instead of the idea that we have all the freedoms that are not explicitly disallowed it becomes we do not have freedoms unless government explicitly grants them.  I think even the most obtuse person could see where the latter will take us.

    I sometimes get the feeling that people like Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Gonzalez watched the movie "Brazil" and totally missed the point.

    i heard one bush apologist elsewhere insist that gonzo's remarks are specifically restricted to the context of citizens/non-citizens.

    @sw
    that apologist is grasping at straws

    Gonzalez: "The fact that the Constitution — again, there is no express grant of habeas in the Constitution. There is a prohibition against taking it away."

    "fumbling" was the word i was thinking of... :D

    So, where are the defenders of Bush policy on this?  Perhaps they don't know what habeas corpus is.

    well, the bush administration is doing a pretty good job of waging a war against bush apologists, it seems. :>

I voted for President Bush but after 6 years I gave up on the man as a fair President. I also did not vote for President-elect Obama. If he screws up I will criticize him. I will always respect the Office of the President know matter who has the job. Let...
King Dennis gives you the truth for a change. The bailout sucks. I wish I could share his belief that Congress would do something about it if it could. I see Congress as utterly corrupt, and I see King Dennis as the only godly man in it....
Often in conversations here at SoulCast and in real life, different subjects come up that create some heated debate.....Abortion....Taxes....Torture.....Corruption.....etc.
Often those subjects intertwine and become different sides of a coin........
