Hi Svetlana. I am from the USA. I understand some of the problems you are facing in Romania with regards to becoming a more democratic country. Congratulations, by the way, on becoming a member of the EU.
There is much we in the US take for granted because our country has a long history of democracy. Democracy is an ideal.....it doesn't happen here, or anywhere else as far as I know.
In spite of our long history of being a "democratic" country, we fought a 4 year civil war less than 150 years ago before dark skinned people were considered anything more than chattel.
Less than 50 years ago our country was almost torn apart by riots over race relations and the Viet Nam war.
People by nature are greedy and as a result often corrupted. People, given power, will usually try to use that power to their advantage and to the advantage of their friends. Only when the populace remains aware of the goings on of the government can democracy thrive.
A free and open media is essential for this. So is wide acceptance among the populace that corruption is wrong (even when the corruption favors you). We are luckier than many countries with the variety of media we have here in the USA. On the other hand, somehow we still have a long way to go here to overcome apathy about corruption.
Romania has come a long way in 15 years. We've been working at it for over 200 years and still haven't gotten everything right yet. It's an ongoing process .... and hopefully as changes are made they are for the better.
Best wishes to you and your country.
