I'm not sure if you really know Europe and its different countries like Germany, France, Spain or Italy for example? Romania from where I come is located in Eastern Europe. It's a poor country which was part of the Eastern bloc from 1947 to 1989. Do you know what the Eastern bloc was? For us in Romania it's a wonderful experience to see and feel what freedom and a democratic system means. But we all know that it is a long way and we still have a lot of problems regarding human rights.Corruption for example is a very important point I have to mention! But now let me tell you some facts so that you can understand how it was in Romania and how it has changed up to now.

After years of oppressive Soviet rule, Romania has enjoyed nearly two decades of democratic governance.  The country recently joined the European Union.  But despite measuring up to EU standards, Romania has been far from free of human rights abuses, particularly in the area of sometimes-deadly violence toward the Roma population (a people commonly referred to as Gypsies).

Romania is home to the highest Roma population in Europe, with as many as 2.5 million.  Unfortunately, Romania’s recent history belies violence towards the Roma.  Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, tens of pogroms have been reported in which Romanians are killed, and their homes destroyed.  In June of 1990, for instance, during a Roma anti-government protest, vigilante workers were let loose upon the Romas to beat and plunder their homes.  Following retaliation, Romas were targeted and arrested, with some reporting torture in police custody.

Accession to the European Union also brought up human rights concerns involving overcrowding in prisons, inhumane orphanages and psychiatric institutions.  The prison facilities are severely outdated, with prisoners lodged on triple bunk beds in high-ceilinged buildings from the 1800’s.  But while EU member states are providing assistance with structural reforms, these human rights issues were in no way deal-breakers for Romania’s accession into the union.

After these explanations I would like to ask all of you. Do you think that this means freedom? Does these bad circumstances correspond to human rights?

My home country Romania is only one of many countries where human rights are not normality! Therefore I would like to add another appaling example.Turkey! Read my post with disgusting details about Turkey and answer me.
