generally speaking, i ascribe zero actual relevance to astrology and the like. that said, i'm always interested in seeing how these twelve archetypes seem appropriate at some times and horribly off at others. naturally, this led me to look at the wikipedia article on the zodiac.

there are really only two zodiac methods commonly used that i know of: the classic/greco-roman one and the asian one*. in terms of the former then: what's your sign? in what ways do the traits your sign says you should have fit? in what ways do they differ?

Ed, watch out...I'm a Taurus!  My opposite is Scorpio.  I have large expressive eyes, like it says in the description.  My Grandmother used to always call me Natalie Wood.  I guess I'm average height, I used to be tall...but I'm past 30 now so I'm shrinking, lol!

I am determined, and stubborn.  I'm reliable, loyal, and prone to foolishness!

That "Compose" is getting in my way of typing and it's pissing me off...there's the bull in me talking!

I'm a Scorpio ed. I think I fit pretty well into that description. Not only for the pluses (analytical, keenly perceptive, inquisitive, focused, determined, hypnotic, and self-contained) but also for the less desirable traits (secretiveness, possessiveness, stubbornness). The sting in my tale doesn't make me warlike however, I prefer to fight my battles with words. My mother has often said "and there's that stinger" when I've fought with someone.

As for the link to sex and reproductive system that Scorpio is famous for it works both ways. When I'm well my sex drive is fantastic (I know, poor Hubby :P), but it is the first thing to suffer when something's wrong. It's also worth noting that the lesser known organ that Scorpio is associated with is the throat. When I get sick the first place I feel it, no matter what's wrong with me, is my throat, and I had to have my tonsils removed when I was very young.

    What sign are you ed?

So do I follow the tropical zodiac or the sidereal zodiac? I've always assumed my birthday falls under Cancer's sign.
The personality traits are scarily accurate, but not the physical ones. However I will gladly agree that Cancer females are HOT! Wikipedia said it so it must be true. ;)

Interesting. I never knew there was an alternative calendar beyond the Chinese one.

I've always been labelled as a very typical Gemini but under the sidereal system I am a Taurean!

    i'm a capricorn ed.

Capricorn is the tenth sign of the Zodiac and associated with hard work and business affairs. Individuals born under this sign are thought to have an ambitious, patient, responsible, stable, trustworthy, shrewd and persistent character but one which is also prone to coldness, conservatism, rigidity, materialism, and dullness.

    ohmy.

  • waterstar said on Jan 19, 2007....

funny you didn't mention your sign, silverwhisper, where you planning to - or was this post just to see how many people on soulcast take the zodiac seriously.

Personally, I am of the opinion that its mostly psychology.  If someone tells you that you have certain traits, they have a tendancy to appear, based on how much you believe the source.

That being said, I am a scorpio.  Do I see scorpio traits in myself? sure, sometimes.  But the descriptions are limited, and don't even begin to describe the greater me.

I mentioned before that I'm a walking contradiction.

    I'm on the Aries/Pisces cusp.

Aries: born under this sign are thought to have a confident, energetic, adventurous, enthusiastic, fair, passionate, and pioneering character but one which is also prone to selfishness, boastfulness, intolerance, impulsiveness, and impatience.
Pisces: Individuals born under this sign are thought to have a dreamy, romantic, generous, emotional, receptive, affectionate, and honest character, but one which is also prone to exaggeration, fickleness, passiveness, hypersensitivity, and paranoia.

    Go figure that one out!

Oh my word!!! I'm having a blast reading all about us Gemini's. Kinda scary how well some of this describes me! I am a very mercurial woman and I change my mind at the drop of a hat. I'm sitting here giggling at myself...

I'm a Scorpio, and I've always thought that fit me fairly well, though I don't put any stock in astrology at all. It's still interesting.

Fitting: the overall intense, passionate nature ascribed to Scorpios, as well as the importance placed on sexuality - I am a very intense person in that area as well. And yes, I am stubborn and analytical, though I would say my heart/emotions rule much more than my head most of the time.

Not so on-target: Cruelty, penchant for war/argument - I'm a pacifist and a peacekeeping sort of person, though I have a fiery temper if you manage to somehow push me too far. And I never stoop to deliberate low blows or anything that would be described as particularly vile, even when I'm absolutely livid.

I am a Gemini, I am Purrs other half :)  My husband is a Captricorn, we seem to fit well as we are both comfortable with each other.  I have found in the past that relationships with Sagittarius is very sexual, a lot of passion, but also don't do well when together for very long.

    Pisces here, ed!

    What is your sign, btw?

    BombShell! lol

And I thought that this was my line:

    I'm a walking contradiction.

I am a Pisces through and through.  But I am surprise in times of dire needs, I seem to exhibit other qualities.  Well, it could be attributed to the fact, that Pisces is the sign at the end and it sums a lot of distinctive qualities of other signs.

So glad you posted this ed!  I have been dying to, and I am so curious of the others. . .

Wow, so many geminis on here! Heck ,we have the best of both worlds: naughty and nice! Which one am I? I'd say 50/50, maybe a little more naughty! BUT, I did have twins! Coincidental? I don't think so. We are also sooooo damn stubborn. Can two geminis get along? I definitely think so - but either you get along great or you really don't. This is from experience!
  • purple said on Jan 19, 2007....
Most of us know our sun sign. I'm a Capricorn. But the way people view us is our rising sign, which in my case is Aries. Perhaps we got off on the wrong foot in the 70's by focusing on people's sun signs and getting hung up there as if that was the only important thing.
For example, a Capricorn with Leo rising and a moon in Venus will act completely different from a Capricorn with Virgo rising and a moon in Cancer.
Some combinations are much more difficult than others. That's why you have to take your whole chart into consideration. You may have a sun sign like Aries, which is fire, but the rest of your chart could be water. There are websites that will make a free natal chart for you if you enter your time of birth and longitude and latitude or city of birth. It will take into account daylight savings time. Then it will print out a chart and show you the big picture. Unfortunately you need training to read the chart, but luckily, it will come with a print out explaining the highlights. Make sure you put if you born born AM or PM or your chart will be upside down.

Horribly typical Libra, Ed.  While I think the daily stuff is BS, over the years I've found that the main sign descriptions pan out more often than not.

So far as those daily forecasts go, I always think of Gary Owens (the guy with his hand cupped over his ear) on Laugh-In reporting, "The science of astrology got a boost today when when everyone born under the sign of Taurus was hit by a Good Humor truck at 3:14 p.m."
  • harriedpsychmajor said on Jan 20, 2007....
Astrology ascribes vague characteristics that could easily be generalized to... anyone, really. I'm an Aquarius, by the way.

From the wiki page on Aquarius. I put some of my responses in bold and parentheses.

Physically, individuals born under the sign of Aquarius supposedly tend to have a vague expression (huh?), straight and silky hair (nope), finely chiseled features (no), and a tall and slender figure (most definitely not!). Mentally/socially acquarias' are generally kind, benevolent, brave, and fiercly loyal (sure, I'll give it that). But conversly, have a tendency to be disinterested, disconnected, withdrawn, coy, and occasionally dull (again, I'll give credit to that).

  • mysterious said on Jan 20, 2007....
yep, coincidentally enough, for me there are some true traits with my astrology thing
  • purrrkitten said on Jan 20, 2007....

I found that the mini explaination on the wikpedia page didn't really match me much but when I clicked the link to the Gemini profile, I really started laughing cuz it did match quite a bit. I ended up reading all the profiles of my kids and DH. I could definately see a lot of traits in it. Kind of like personality tests (which I have a total fascination with)...  :-)

    daily: :D

pearl: i do eventually answer that question, as i think you've seen.

    mimi: bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha! i'm sure you're plenty hot, mimi. :>

alyss: now i'm curious what ET's sidereal sign is... :>

queen: your sign is associated w/ conservatism? that can't be right! :D

waterstar: i generally don't post my answers to my questions at first. i avoid doing so b/c i don't want to influence the flow of the conversation from the get-go, you know?

bombshell: son of a gun, that's pretty darned disparate!

purr: i'm glad you're having so much fun w/ this, purr. :>

infernal: you know, i think that being ruled by your heart more than your head is a good thing, myself. :D

mom: hey, my wife's a capricorn, too! for sagitarians: those were tempestuous, always fighting & making up-type relationships, huh?

paper: i'm surprised you haven't blogged about this yourself, then! you appear to be unique among the respondents as a pisces. that's kinda nifty, i think.

MR: i think you're plenty bright and that your modesty prevents you from seeing that.

beyond: it's weird to see how some of these things do/don't represent us, isn't it?

CW: oddly enough, earthy isn't a word i would have associated w/ you. funny, that.

raft: damn, that's kinda funny. i've never understood how physical descriptions got embedded w/ this sort of thing--do you think it's a weird offshoot/remnant of phrenology?

twinboyzmama: twins and you're a gemini? that's just too perfect! :>

purple: nice to see you here. i wasn't aware you were that conversant in astrology. is it something you studied?

JD: i'll confess i was surprised to see you here. funny as ever, JD. :> btw, did you realize i'm still blocked from your blog?

wombat: well, they're often written generally enough and in such vague fashion IMX as to have little applicability in any real, direct sense, i find.

evilinclinations: yeah, i've had that same thing w/ comment edits myself--odd. must be some kind of bug.

bigvoodoojack: welcome to my blog and thanks for stopping by!

leon: old/new scorpio? i must have missed something there.

ms bradford: there seem to be an unusual number of scorpios. that's interesting.

yani: yeah, i know what you mean. :>

lou: i never heard that segment but that's hysterical! i find the daily stuff BS too and was struck by how often the general stuff appears to relate, too. :>

harried: i appear to posseses a flair for the dramatic, a common trait in leos evidently, but i'm crap at managing money--there are some jobs i should never try! :>

mysterious: i see that you're choosing to remain true to your namesake by not divulging your zodiac sign. cool. :>

purr: hey, i have a fascination w/ personality tests, too! :>

pontius: wow, i haven't met many people whose signs fit them so closely. i can see how that could be both good and bad. :>

I'm a Libra and I most definitely need balance in my life. I tend to have periods of doing extremely well, and then the scales tip the other way for a time. So, obtaining balance isn't always easy. I'm creative and artistic while often putting other's needs before my own. Though sometimes very social, I don't need a lot of people around me to feel at peace with myself. I guess, I'm just comfortable with being who I am.
  • silverwhisper said on Jan 26, 2007....
