New Jersey has mandatory education laws for children between 6 - 16. When investigating these requirements some years ago, I was never able to get an accurate response on whether the - 16 meant to 16, or thru 16. But, in any case, parents may homeschool their children without notifying their school district, legally, however, may find themselves being challenged when trying to do so.  ENOCH provides easy to understand information that is readily available online. Parents may, however, be surprised to know that they are not required to provide any information at all to the schools. But, problems can be numerous if you try to pull your child out of public school, especially in the middle of a school year and you're not familiar with your rights. Many school districts want to discourage parents from teaching their children at home and will try to make it as difficult as possible. By this I mean, some have been harassed and/or challenged in court. One town is now proposing to make it a crime for a child to be in public during school hours, even if they are being homeschooled.

that sounds really, really weird. i take it your dissatisfaction w/ the school system has led you to do some research?

i know a few folks who homeschool. this is a difficult road, i find. one pitfall is that of the kids not being able to socialize w/ their peers, w/ whom they would normally do so at school. have you considered that prospect?

Ed - I guess what happens depends on where you live in NJ and I don't want to go into detail as to exactly why I investigated. I posted information on my website for quite some time to help parents in need of accurate information, but dropped it a couple of years ago. Kids who are homeschooled can socialize. Parents can form study groups, or take their kids on field trips where they can interact with others their own age. In addition, there are evenings and weekends for them to hang out together. However, if a law passes that prohibits these children from being out in public during school hours, it can greatly impact socialization and personal freedom.  I remember taking my child to the park one day at 3:00PM. She hadn't been feeling well earlier and wanted some fresh air. I was stopped and harassed for sitting in my car for ten minutes in a town I lived in for over 20 years. I know why it happened and who was behind it and took the appropriate action. Where I live, some in the school system are more than qualified to be there, but others have their own agenda. I don't believe children should be carbon copies of each other. I believe they should flourish by taking the information they learn and developing their own ideas and opinions. For the most part, that is discouraged in our schools. Homeschooling is hard, but some colleges accept homeschoolers and they can learn more than is taught in traditional school settings. I do want parents who choose to homeschool to feel emowered by doing so and not intimidated in any way. There are so many support groups out there and if in need, printable, detailed guidelines available online.
