The recent minimum wage legislation is once again bringing out the true colors of politicians on both sides. The Republicans are making an issue out of the exemption of the American Somalia because apparantly the Speaker of the House who happens to be a Democrat has links to the main company in this area. They seem to let the real bad effects of the proposed legislation get tossed aside to further their own agenda. Now I am hearing that Pelosi is going to let the pressure get to her and omit this part of the legislation (I heard that on the news but I may have heard wrong). Weak. Democrats. Weak. Show some balls, I mean that figuratively. That is all I can say.

Let us look at the real issue here and that is that the American Somalia has been excluded from the minimum wage laws since maybe the 1950's, but I could be wrong. The American Somalia has been exempt because the cost of living there is so much lower among other things. Including them in the law would devastate their economy, or so that is what I here.

So why are some of the Republicans making a big deal out of this? Politics, pure and simple. They are proving what many already know and that being that politicians aren't trying to do anything to make the country better. They are just in it for the power, glory, and of course money. They contest meaningless things about the bill to make a show for their supporters who also oppose the bill but don't address the real issues like maybe adding something to the bill in which the minimum wage regulates itself based on changes in the economy. Of course this is something both parties would never be for. I mean, the next time election time rolls around they would have one less thing to rally people to vote for them.

Anybody who sees anything wrong with what I just said feel free to correct me. That was just me repeating what I had heard from the top of my head.

i agree that exception is stupid and blatantly partisan. the democrats are absolutely wrong about that and i'm worried about the impact this will have on small businesses.

Nancy Pelosi is already shown she is just another politican, and the republicans are no better.  Both parties are worthless in my book, that is why I have been an indpendent ever since Ronal Reagan took back the IRA deduction from most of us.  They are all liars.  Barak Obama announced he is running for Pres today.  He talks a common sense game, we'll see.

Silverwhisper- I think you missunderstood me. I actually support the exemption because of what it would do to the territories economy if they were included since they have never really been part of the minimum wage law, partially because they have a much lower cost of living than the rest of the country. To me that makes sense. It is in the best interest of the territory and its people to keep the cost to living down even if it means a lower minimum wage so by applying this law into the area it would cause uncontrollable inflation and probaly result in many jobs being lost. I was calling the democrats weak because I heard they were going to take this part out to make the Republicans happy and not look at the consequences of the actions.

I also was trying to make a point about the Republicans trying to make a show out of the whole ordeal by ignoring the fact that their party has supported this exemption in the past but are now making it an issue for no apparant reason other than their egos. If they really wanted to make an issue out of something that would make sense it would be to add in a inflation index (I think that is what it would be called) which would regulate the minimum wage without having to pass this law every ten years or so. I guess they want to save that for election year as much as the democrats do.

I do not always agree with silverwhisper, but he is right on the money on this one. There is mountains of information out on the net as to why the minimum-wage is just a political bouncing ball. To be used every few years to stimulate uninformed emotion, from time to time.

NS: ah. see, i actually dislike the minimum wage law as a whole, b/c it assumes the costs of living in NYC, LA or SF are a good barometer by which to judge the cost of living in rural alabama, for example. on minimum wage, i think the democratic party is just plain wrong. it would have made more sense not to pass the darned thing in the first place, i think

Yes but you have to remember that it was the Republicans who passed it in Congress under Clinton I do believe. They just use it as a political tool and don't worry about adjusting it for those curcumstances. I think there is a place for minimum wage laws but since the federal government rarely can do anything right maybe it ought to be left up to the states.
