Why do we have conscience? That is a question most atheists ask. I don’t mean to offend any atheist reading this article. Being an orthodox Muslim and a believer in God, I have always believed that the existence of a conscience is because of the existence of our soul. It is perhaps our own sense of right and wrong, which helps us in every step of our life. But this something what atheists don’t understand or rather don’t want to understand. I am not a preacher and am not trying to force people into what I believe but I just want them to see religions like Christianity, Islam and Buddhism actually say.

Hey, great question :) As a Christian, a conscience hasn't been a widely discussed topic. However, in terms of how God relates, I've been told that our conscience is God - the Holy Spirit. It dwells inside of us and gives us a sense of right and wrong. We can stamp it out or choose to listen to it, for its instruction is life-giving. As the Bible goes, God has spoken to His people over time, and His Spirit has dwelled within His followers. When Jesus Christ came to pay the price for the sins of all mankind, he rose after 3 days and then told His disciples that the Holy Spirit - the Wonderful Counselor - would come upon them in His place while He (Jesus) ascended to Heaven to await the end days. So while God doesn't have physical form in this world, He is a spiritual being, in a spiritual realm that is unseen and no less real. Angels, demons, the Spirit of God, and Spirit of the Antichrist...all things that many don't want to understand. Many won't acknowledge the power of evil and Satan that stirs it, because it's freaky. It's only scary if that person has already rejected God - because God gives us strength and weapons (the best being the Bible and the Holy Spirit), to resist evil and to strive for following Jesus. In the Christian context, that is the explanation for the Holy Spirit/conscience, why we have it, and what it's for. Hope this blog brings up more views to discuss!

Hmmm conscience.... Are we talking about our ability to hear ourselves think? The inner voice of ourselves? The questions we ask ourselves and engage in internal conversation with? To me conscience isn't a thing that some omnipotent being hard-wired inside of me as a regulatory fail safe. Conscience, in my opinion, is my memory of the conversations I have with myself. And since I have emotions, ideas, and beliefs it all comes together as if I were having a relationship with another person. Allbeit a person that I can never break up with or divorce. I am stuck with this constant companion for the remainder of my days.

if an athiest believes there is no soul....
and another believes conscience is soul,
does an athiest have a soul?

certainly athiests still maintain they have a conscience!

to assert, in the context of any discussion involving athiesm, that conscience is soul, what do we tell the athiest who doesnt believe in soul,? how do we account for the presence of his conscience, without asserting that he is WRONG, that his beliefs are untrue, when he says there is no soul.

can both the athiest, and the believer, be correct.
does athiestic disbelief in the presence of a soul, preclude him from h having one?

if in fact, we 'create our own reality'... if in fact, all reality is nothing but the total of all consciousness creating physical reality, FROM soul, (for those who believe) could it not also be possible for the athiest, who disbelieves in soul, to likewise create HIS OWN reality, a reality that does not indeed possess a soul?

if so, then indeed both the believer, and the non-believer, would be correct in their assertions...
along these lines, with respect to the possibility that we do indeed create our own reality, i would suggest that a believer and a non believer, could in fact BOTH be correct.

each creates his own path, each his own beliefs, and each his own soul, conscience, experiences, and results...

    no?
