I'm trying to figure something out...I went to a heavy metal (or whatever they call it) show with my friend, and we're both quite normal-looking, and the place was filled with people who were dressed in black, with varying degrees of gothic trenchcoats and clothing that looked like costumes, and the like. It was interesting to see, but it felt a bit like Halloween! Now, I just want to make it clear that I have absolutely nothing against people asserting their individuality, and I love to meet all kinds of people, but I'm curious as to WHY they (as in the persons who like gothic/black clothes/dark makeup/sinister look) dress like they do. Do people think that by dressing radically (the whole gothic look) against the norms of society they are making a statement of defiance and saying "to hell with you, I have my own style and no one else is like me"? But when they think they are different and attempt to escape the classifications of society, don't they then fall into a group of like-minded people and defeat the whole purpose? Or perhaps this desire to be recognized (and gain attention, no matter if it's positive or negative) generates in childhood or some psychological issues? How do people who have made a choice to assert their individuality through their outer appearance get treated by the more normal-looking members of society? Are they taken seriously, regarded with interest, admiration, or scorn? Once again, I tend to overanalyze, but I'm just curious, that's all. I'm afraid that I'm still not a fan of such angry music, because in many cases, performers emphasize Satan, etc., and that tends to go against my Christian beliefs, and I usually end up with a bit of a headache!

They are conforming. Everyone must conform to something. There is just a plethora of options so everybody thinks that they are doing something different. But if you take the term..."get in where you fit in"...well, that is what we all do. Some poeple are who they are just because of where they were born and raised, not because of anything else. Everything you have been exposed to makes you who you are. Including the goth..."look at me" people. I seriously see loneliness when I look at some of them. There is nothing more tantrum-like then peircing your everything on your body...they have the aura of a 3 year old....kicking and screaming. I don't see them as anything different because they are not making any difference. They are just doing "something else". I think tha same thing about rap...I can't live without it but I question the lyrics....and the content is pretty harsh. I understand what they are saying, I feel the heart in it all but if I didn't, I probably wouldn't be a fan because they literally talk about sex, guns, drugs and money and violence...

I totally agree with you...the three-year-old mentality seems to be prevalent amongst them, especially when it concerns people nearing their thirties or even older. You'd think that they would've grown out of that phase, you know? It's partially understandable when their in their late teens/early twenties, because that can be justified as the rebellious phase...but there comes a time when you just have to move past your psychological issues and grow up!

While I can understand your thoughts, and even agree to an extent. I am one of those old foggies who dress primarily in black and some might consider a 'goth'. I can say though, I have dressed like this as far back as I can remember. Black has always been my favorite 'shade', since in turn it is not 'exactly' a 'color'. lol I constantly get attacked and bashed because of the way I dress. My shirts are huge, big enough to fit at least 2 of me in them. They are comfortable. As for pants, no, they dont hang around my ass, they may be a bit larger than needed, but they still settle at my waistline, not hipline. While I can understand your opinion on this, I ask that you dont dump all of us older so called 'goths' into that same genre as many of the kids go by these days. I like it, its what I wear and has been for at least 2 decades now. I wear what is comfortable, which recently has become what people call pajamas. eh, they're comfortable, so I wear it, odds are, it will be black too, maybe with some small tidbits of other colors, but not likely. Sorry, rambling.
