I was commenting on allaroundgirl's post about the first 12 days of January when a connection with superstition has been made that i didnt see at the beginning.

So i am asking you: are you supertitious?
Are you giving even the slightest importance and meaning to it?

I found out that my dad was incredibly superstitious and a firm believer in astrology only late in his and my life. I never noticed anything, he never say anything. He didnt panick if someome would spill salt on the table, he wouldn't cross the street at the sight of a black cat.
But one day my mom, casually talking, revealed that he had been visiting once a wek,  for as long as she knew him, a tarot card reader. He woudl go each Monday morning, as to start the week, and he would then take some decisions instead of other based on what that ball reader was telling him. I was very surprised of hearing that.
I have had during years several friends who think a broken mirror is bad luck, or never open an umbrella in the house or think that reading horoscopes is more than a silly passing time. I read mine too...its fun...

But but my very first heavy encounter with astrology and the consequences of superstition
happened in occasion of my interview for my last job here in Usa. The company i wanted to work for is one of the coolest: an all organic products company specialized in home interiors. Beautiful, luxurious bedding, tablecloths, bathroom sets, rugs, curtains, even candle and chocolate ..all made exclusively with organic material (cotton, silk, wax and cocoa)  imported from Italy and India. A dream.
I fell in love with the concept, the products and at the beginning even with her. My boss.
She is one of the VIP of the city's high society. She lives in one of the most exclusive neighborhood. She has that allure that comes from a family of old money where everything is carefully understated and tone down. We are not talking about the oil or plastic surgery flashy trashy money here.
She is a tall, lean, gorgeous woman close of 50 years but with a such enormous arrays of plastic surgery, expensive creams and botox,  sauna and yoga massages, Thai chiropratic sessions and healthy organic diet to look 20 years younger. And, not to forget  the $220 Seven jeans that perfeclty enhance her legs and butt...
So there we were at my first interview with her (where she arrived 2 hours and 15 minutes later...but its ok, i thought, she is a busy business woman) and between questions and talking she handed me a paper with 10 questions. She told me to take my time and fill them up and give them back to her.
I read them and i thought; what the heck? The questions varied from where are you picturing yourslef in 3, 5. 10 years? Whats the purpose of your life. Where do you feel happier. Who is the most important person in your life. How do you value enviroment and volunteering  ......and on an on....
I completed as accurately as possible but i wasn't prepared for a shrink couch and then arrived to the last one. "Please, specify your place and time of birth".
Time of birth?

I was perplexed but then i thought "Lady, as long as you give me this freaking job i can even tell you who cut my ombelical cord".
Evidently my answers that day satisfied my blonde-botoxed boss and i got the job. I will tell you in another post my enlightments and insanity correlated to it.
For now i will tell you how i found out the need of knowing  my hour of birth.

This organic, democratic, enviromentalist,  women rights supporter was an astrology junk addicted. To the extreme.
She would make me call each day her personal astrologer (paid a whooping $110 at divination) to set an appointment with her. If she couldn't meet her due to meetings or trips, the astrologer would email me the reading of the day. I would then immediately transfer it to my boss. I had to print out the astrological reading for the week where she would suggest my boss even the good HOURS of the day for doing stuff or taking decisions....
She made me cancelled the departing day of one flight to India because it wasn't the right time to go, according to Miss Zodiac.

I met her the second day of my job when i still didnt know the complete picture. She looked very nice, a very thin and kind woman with piercing blue eyes. She told me my hand shake was very energic.

Now i met a modern Rasputin. And my boss was indeed the Zarina of Russia.
So basically i had to thank Miss Zoadiac for my job, as well as any other employees of the compamy. When my boss was looking for another accounting manager Miss Zodiac has been particularly busy. She even went to some of the meetings with the candidates, probably to "feel" the vibes.
My vibes must be very negative at the end since i got fired for really futile motives....:-0. She had been reading my horoscope each single day....

I wondering if my boss was desperately looking for some kind of working soulmates.....well, it wasn't me...evidently my astrological sign clashed with hers...and guess what..she was a Leo, just like my father...uhmmmm, should i have started believing in astrology?

She was this confident, successfull entrepreneur, international traveler, with influencing friends in the rigth places, two Blackberry to keep track of her personal and bussiness appointments but totally under the power of a tarot cards reader and paralized by supersitions.
I couldn't believe it.....

And so be careful........you too might be fired ....."when the Moon is in the Seventh house and Jupiter lies with Mars. This is the age of Aquarius"

    She was just a nutcase.

I can understand believing in astrology i guess.  it's taking it to the extreme as she did that makes her a real nut.

my dad once sent away for a reading where he had to provide a date and time of birth.  That was the only time i knew he did anything like that and i assume he was satisfied with the results.

my mother is highly superstitious.  in fact, whenever she sees a black cat, she spits!

me?  nah, that's not for me.  I have gone to several palm readers and tarot card readers with my girlfriends when i was ALOT younger....and to me, it was always just a bunch of hogwash....

Wait, so you got fired because your sign clashed with hers? Excuse me, but isn't that slightly illegal? I love to read my horoscope, and sometimes, the things in them are true about me, it makes me feel good (there are rarely bad news, the worst might be that I'm feeling cranky and will lose something). I don't, however, go crazy about it. You should really look into that...seriously
  • momsrock said on Jan 07, 2007....

lmao... I can't believe how much she relied on it for decisions!

I like to read mine every now and again...for entertainment purposes only... but they don't carry a lot of weight with me. :)

  • gingersoul said on Jan 07, 2007....

SW........yep....that's how she was..actually how she is, unless she died as a consequence of the Seventh house crashed on her while she was doing yoga ....;-)....

Secret.....lol...nutcase is the least you can say.....what was striking for me was the normality of the outside (as we can say normality) and this crazy obession of her........and yet she was at the head of a very successfull business.......she had been even invited to a dinner at the White House with Bush last summer....she declined the invitation though....

I use to make fun of my supertitious friends opening umbrella in their house or walking underneath the ladders...lol......they have been predicting me centuries of disgraces...

  • gingersoul said on Jan 07, 2007....

Tbs......you know...the way she put it it wasn't that direct.....but i saw Miss Zodiac in her office two days before our final conversation......i have to say that she offered me to find me another job and she was giving me good suggestions about my divorce too...she hugged me before i left her office and she write a very nice reference letter...but still......

Moms.....amazing eh? Yes, i do read the horoscope and i can even go and have fun findinf my astrological perfect partner but it doesn't go further than fun....:-)

Btw, my ex husband and my signs were the two most passionate and erotic ot the Zodiac combinations......unfortunately in the communication field his Sun wasn't in harmony with my Moon....guess what? it was right....lol....

oh and i didn't even tell you guys the way she treated her poor Mexican housekeeper...absolutely shameful...

  • RollingC said on Jan 07, 2007....
I'm sorry to hear that Ginger and I think I know how you feel.... I didn't get laid off because of astrology but the reasons were just as stupid.
I followed my dream of working for a big Co. that had dream benefits for their employees but within the 90  day period (right after Christmas) I got laid off for being too strict in doing my job and "somebody" with connections complained about me. I guess more than once.
    Oh well....live and learn...
I got two other Co.'s that I used to work for that I left in very good terms with and I'm sure that they would like me back. Time will tell.
Look at it this way...it wasn't meant for you and the good Lord has something waiting just for you.
  • kruuyai said on Jan 07, 2007....
Supertsition will make people do crazy things.  In Mexico, I didn't dare let my cats roam the streets (not that I would have anyway).  People there constantly poison cats because of their superstitions.  My boyfriend's family lost 7 cats to poison-by-neighbors in the first two years that I was there.  Personally, I love black cats.  A lot of people take unlucky numbers like 13 and turn them around into their own personal lucky numbers.  I think that's a healthy attitude.
  • gingersoul said on Jan 07, 2007....

Rolling....thank you so much for your words...you know..i do think the same..that job was really eating me alive......having to deal with her some days was really too much..

    So you were too strict.?.....crazy.....

    I am looking around now so i wish both of us good luck  and a new great job{{hugs}}

  • gingersoul said on Jan 07, 2007....

Kruu, i love black cats too....but its tue that for their color they are usually the ones left behind.....

Its funny because in Italy our bad number is 17 and the worst unlucky day of all, teh day during the one some people would simply stay in bed and never get out of the house, is Friday 17.......so when i moved her everybody was telling me about this infamous Friday 13  and i couldn't care less.......lol...

Superstition is the opium of the people, like religion. Is it a coincidence that the most supertitious societies are also the most religious?

My aunt was a semi-nun....she would go to church each single day, rain o shine.....she would have a saint to protect her for anything: a saint for her stomach pain, a saint for her job, a saint for her pet, a saint for her lottery ticket.....but she was also so supertitious that any time she was getting out of the huose she would never do it with her left foot first...

Yet she had a saint even for the pedestrian .....only i don't remember his name...lol..

Ginger, I am superstitious about a couple things, but nothing astrology-related.

This happened when I was 15.  My mom came to pick me up at school  There was a shopping bag in the back seat, and I asked her what it was.  She told me it was a Christmas gift for me, and to not look in it.  Well, of course, I snooped.  Inside was a beautiful pale gray and tan striped sweater.  It became my favorite sweater, but...  Every time I wore it something bad happened.  One time when I had it on, I fell and broke the 3 middle toes on my right foot.  The last time I wore it, my grandmother died of a stroke that same day.  I never wore it again.   To this day, I am very superstitious about anyone snooping and finding out what their Christmas gifts are.  I used to tell the kids do not ask me because If you find out what it is, I will return it.  And I would have.

Also when I travel by air, whatever I wear when I leave is what I must wear the day I return.  Even down to my earrings.  For some reason I have it in my head that will keep me safe.

  • RollingC said on Jan 07, 2007....
Yea... I work in security and the security dept. of the hospital (small hospital of a larger chain here in South Florida) and the available schedules (there were 2) were up for grabs so I picked the one that I wanted..the parking garage...and resisted hints that I should take the other one that had working weekends.
On the floor that I was in it was supposed to be patient parking only (Doctors can park anywhere) and some I saved for Doctors. The rest...too bad, you can't park here..lol. You'd be surprised how many people...fellow employees included... that I kicked out... including some that had big connections and important posts.  It's more detailed than that but that's the gist of it.
And the funny part is that Doctors and Patients applauded my efforts.
But since the 90 days wasn't up my boss was too concerned with C.Y.A. and looking good so they nitpicked me to death and exercised their right to let me go.
Hey...it works both ways as I really don't need the aggravation. I wanted that job as the health benefits were better but no problem...will solve that soon as I get in touch with the old Co.'s I worked for.
The hospital can go back to the parking nightmare (they really have a nightmare in parking in the day shift) that they had before and too bad, so sad.
Sorry for the long answer...I don't usually rant.
Happy New Year and peace be with you.

Mimi....geez..that is a striking sequel of bad coincidences...how odd... well, you know they say that having some rituals in our life help us to cope better with the stress or bad memories..so we are going to call them rituals more than superstitions....what you thinks?.....:-)

I think my ritual is connected to release my anxiety of having to go to a place i dont know....i have to learn the most i can about the sorrounding area in case i might get lost.... so i go to mapquest and i print out any info.....it calms me down a lot..it helped me good up to now...

Go figure! Being fired for doing your job! What a b***it!

Makes you wish that nobody will never find the exit once in there....all of them lost for ever in the parking maze...calling out loud your name.....and you..."No, i can't strictly talking help you out now"......i am glad you have another job opportunity.....:-)

Craaaaaaaazy... That's taking things juuuuust a little too far, wouldn't you say? To live your life by what someone else dictates just by what they "see" in your future is one thing but to fire your employees by what that someone "sees" about them??? I don't think soooooo...

Anyone know where to find the nearest sanatarium? cuckoo cuckoo...

MsStar.....lol.......her enemies waiting for her to get her....poor grandma...but i am with you...its just an unebeliavable soap opera...

i remember years ago i bought the I King book.......basically is the same divination of the future but made in a very elegant and intellectual form..you have to compose 6 lines and depending if they are whole or broken you can read their meaning in teh book.....its almost poetic....well one day they told me i would have fly over the big water and like a phoenix live several lives in a far away country....guess what? one years later i took a plane to come here crossing the ocean and i changed my life several time too......

There is always something in our life that cards and horoscope can tell about us.....:-)

  • mom said on Jan 08, 2007....
Well, I think everyone has pretty much summed it up, so I will answer your queston.  I read my horoscope for entertainment.  A professor did a class on horoscopes.  He got everyones zodiac sign and he printed some papers out and then he passed each one out to each student.  He then asked if that sounded just like them.  They all responded yes.  He told everyone to  hand their paper to the person behind them.  It turned out that he had written the same thing on each piece of paper.I will tell you what I believe, I believe that what goes around comes around.  I believe that if you ever say that you won't do something, eventually you will.  I believe our intuition can be very strong.  I also believe that anything that if a person seeks answers from elsewhere instead of praying is not good.
  • polarheart said on Jan 08, 2007....
Ginger - I'm glad I wasn't you in that job, because I would have had to resign!  I cant stand superstition!

    BUT

Mom - I agree with you wholeheartedly!  I believe in the power of words - there is a scripture in the Bible (Proverbs) "The power of life and death lies in the tongue".  When I was much younger I use to say "I will never marry an Englishman" and "I will never ever live in England". . .and just guess what happened!!!???  My motto is : NEVER SAY NEVER!  I also believe that intuition is God's gift to us in helping to guide us, and its sad when people deny their own intuitions to follow what other people tell them to do and say. . .perhaps it will be easier to blame someone else if things do go wrong?
  • mom said on Jan 08, 2007....
It is said that Faith is believing in what can't be seen.  It doesn't take much faith to have your palm read or etc.  I am a firm believer in Guardian Angels.   Mine has had to work over time for me.  I also know that as a mother, my God given intuition helped save my childs life when he was an infant.
  • hotaka said on Jan 08, 2007....

While it's incredible I am not surprised to hear of such a person. I am sorry for that you lost the job, however.

I knew a girl who followed the old Japanese system (based on the Chinese system) of having the days of the year marked with characters signifying what kind of a day any particular day would be. I don't know most of them but two I know well. One is the day of Big Safety. On days marked with these characters you can do anything and all will be well. But the day before is always a very inauspicious day. She wouldn't fly, take a trip, drive a car or even have sex on the unlucky days.

And of course there are as much to be said about Chinese astrology as there is to be said about western astrology. I saw a program over New Year's where a well-known specialist was telling guests on the show whether or not they should stick with their jobs, break up with their boyfriends, or move to another apartment based on their signs, the months, the seasons, the weather, and which direction the door to their abode faced. There are people who base every move they make on these things.

Me? I am an Aquarian. This is my age. I can do whatever I want. Ha-ha!

  • gingersoul said on Jan 08, 2007....

Sensitive - uh huh. Easy going - too much sometimes. Compassionate - I'd like to think so.  A very good friend - only those that know me could tell you for sure. Positive - I try these days, but I used to be a pessimist big time. Life of the party - errrrrrrrr... well. Not really. Maybe sometimes. Maybe more like the goofball of the party... ehehheheh

Anyway, my reason for mentioning the eastern astrology is because it is different from western astrology and you can find diehard believers of each system. So which one is right? Truth is in the mind of the believer, eh?

Superstitious? Yes, in a "by rote" way or should I say "edging my bets" way.

I won't go nuts on spilled salt, but I won't cross handshakes. I know what it's supposed to mean and I don't like it.

My mom's a huge astrology freak. She used to bug me about it when I was in my teens. I know entirely too much about it (and not enough, because I never tried to learn). It's a control issue more than anything.
  • gingersoul said on Jan 09, 2007....

Hello Raft....so long i dont see you...how have you been doing?

Yes, you are right.......i too associates superstition with controlling issue...

our ancestors had no scientific way to interpret the reality and the unpredictable course of the events...having something fixed in rigid structures and rules that at the same time could give the illusion to know the future and maybe control the consequences of one choice instead of another one explains the oringin of astrology.

  • mousenphonic said on Jan 10, 2007....

Okay, I'm very supersticious but I also have to say: WTF?!!! That's just ridiculous, I can't imagine myself staying in bed this morning or quiting my job because Mars has moved into it's ninth cycle, clashing with Jupiter. (Translation: I will have a fight with a form of Authority) Yeah, right.

It kinda takes out the excitement of living not facing a problem or tackling a challenge.  Don't worry, Karma will catch up with her for exploiting the gifts of divination.  If I were you, I'll sue her for every penny and the two Blackberries. You'll probably win, unless the judge is also supersticious and his spiritual advisor predicted that Venus shall bring gifts while passing the moon (Translation: If you throw this courtcase, an attractive woman will  give you a big bonus cheque)

Oh, ginger. It was more than that now. I'm sure our relationship goes beyond being virtually physical. Did I mention I noticed your virtual cleavage that day when my virtual eyes glanced down your virtual top? Sorry. Even virtual guys can't help themselves. ;)

Ginger: Yeah. Been busy. Between the holidays and the new job, I haven't found the time to come here. I'll probably be away more often than not in the next little while.

Hotaka:   Us virtual guys can't help looking at the lady's virtual cleavage. The imagination is a powerful aphrodisiac. Too bad it can't be bottled and sold!

Ginger:  Went back to my old Co. and they hired me on the spot as I walked in the door stating my intentions. Had to take a small cut in pay and rank for the moment but that's ok.
